Food Dehydrator Question
    #635080 - 05/18/02 04:41 AM (21 years, 10 months ago)

Does anyone know of a brand of food dehyrdator that has the option of turning off the heating unit and just use circulating air to dry with?

I'd love to buy a Ronco 5-tray dehydrator (they're only $40) but you can't control the heat/temperature. I'm not electrically savvy so I'd be afraid of trying to open and disconnect the heating unit myself.

Thanks!

Love & Light,

Boppity

http://www.sporeworks.com/misc.html

Sporeworks has a "AMERICAN HARVEST GARDEN MASTER DEHYDRATOR
This remarkable unit comes with four trays and is expandable to 30 trays. Adjustable thermostat allows you to control the amount of heat for perfect drying every time. 0 - 155 degrees F." but it doesnt come too cheap...$175

Yep they aren't cheap. Why dont you just fan dry? Then drop em in a desiccant chamber to remove the extra moisture.

why does it matter? most food dehydrators only heat to about 150 deg f and that is ok as far as i know. i bought a really expensive adjustable themrostat one a couple of years ago but i think it doesnt matter at all. a big flush is more easily dried on an oven rack.

the whole scare over heat and psilocybin is misguided. i think it arises from the thermal death temp of mycelium being 106 deg f. but psilocybin doesnt break down until like 250 deg f!

Thanks for the link!! I don't care if it'll cost more...as long as it'll do the job.

I don't want to fan dry because of leaving a fan on while I'm out of my apartment as well as blowing around dust/contams in my apartment while I have shrooms still growing. Dehyrdators usually run silently and are safe to leave running.

Thanks!

Love & Light,

Boppity

Yeah I do know a cheaper model.

Try and get a Galloping Gourmet Snack Express.
If you can find one.

I got one from a friend.....they kick ass.
It has a Temp control..... which is very important.
I keep mine on at 85 degrees and the mushrooms dry out in 24 hours.

good luck!

I bought one of the Ronco's. Just disconnect the heater. Works great. Cracker dry mushrooms in 24-48 hrs without heat. If you know nothing about electricity, perhaps a friend could help you out? If not open it up and figure out the circuits carefully (one for the fan, one for the heater). Disconect the wires that go to the heater and tapethem up with electrical tape or, wire nuts whichare better. Remember: One hot wire, one neutral wire. Make sure the neutral is never disconected in the fan.Don't plug it in untill you're absolutely sure it's right.

Easier than growing shrooms, believe me.

Forget about spending $175.00 for a dehydrator, it's crazy.

Thanks everyone for the additional advice. I did find a cheaper Garden Master for only $60 so I'm still doing online searches to find an affordable one with temp control!

phrozendata:

why are you so sure? what is your evidence? anecdotal? someone said on the shroomery? its bullshit. people BOIL mushrooms to make tea without any loss of potency. boiling temps are far above those of a normal dehydrator and they are higher than what would come out of a warm oven!

BWO: excellent point. Plus many recipes for cooking shrooms all involve frying/baking as well. Being a newbie I'm just trying to keep all bases covered from the get go ya know?

yeah. i did that too! i bought an excalibur dehydrator. they are the best. fully contollable thermo etc etc. but now i only use that for making dried fruit and now yogurt (made some yesterdya for the first time and i think im gonna try to sell it at the farmers market to all the yuppies ). when you get the big flushes youll realize that the easiest, most efficient and the best way to dry is on newspaper laid over your oven racks. pull the rack out and open the oven door like in the "oven tek".... or amke a "drying tnet" with some towels or a big box and a fan. food dehydrators are a pain because you have to cut the caps away from the stems on the bigger ones.
