I wanna know this too...If they only heat to 90 degrees but dry the shrooms fast..I would think there would be no noticable potency loss..I have thought about one of these before...any one use them?

I wouldn't go oiver 90, but that should be fine.

I diconnected the heating element in mine 'cause it gets up to like 160. Even with no heat my shrooms dry in 36 hours - Cracker dry!

I am by no means an expert on growing these things but i heard if they get above 84 degrees the toxins die out and you wont trip as hard. At home Depot you can by this stuff that people use to dry out their basements. A friend of mine uses this stuff and it works wonders. It dries those little guys out very well and then he just keeps them in the fridge. It isnt toxic and it never touches the shrooms directly. I will find out the name of the product and get back to the both of you on it. But in the mean time good luck growing.

The name of the product is Damp-Rid it is peletized Calcium Cholride.

Damp rid is A desiccant. A dessicant is a highly hydrophillic substance that will draw moisture out of the air. Calcium Chloride is a good desicant as is Silicone Dioxide or 'silica gel' the shit inside the packets in your Flintstone vitamins

I use a dehydrator at 95 F. I'll find out soon if that's a problem or not...but considering most oven teks go over 100 degrees. Also TM, in a PM message you told me you wished you could get your dehydrator upwards to 110 degrees...now you're changing stories?

Peace,

Boppity

I have one of the Ronco Dehydrators... they get a lot hotter than 90 degrees.. I would stick to a fan and desicant.

So just buy a dehydrator with an adjustable temperature control. People also disconnect the heating unit in the Ronco model and just dry with air...most people say their shrooms reach cracker crisp in 1 to 2 days with that method...mine reach cracker crisp in 10 hours at 95 F.

Peace,

Boppity

No... I still wish I could get it to 90-110 but no higher. However, it works fine at room temp anyway, just takes 36 hours. BUT... I just got some dessicant, so I'll start using that to finish 'em off after the first 12-20 hours in the dehydrator.

I have been using Silica gel with fairly good results. However, I only have 400 grams of the stuff, and it slows down really fast (which is a problem, especially when you have a lot to dry) plus the initial investment isn't cheap, but it's not too bad. I used to use damp-rid, but that stuff is just as expensive as silica gel and isn't reusable. It does work a little faster, however. I think I'm gonna splurge and get a food dehydrator. How hard is it to disable the heating element?

A very useful bit of knowledge - "Damp-Rid" is just very expensive "Ice-Melt" (calcium chloride). In fact right on the pakage of Damp-Rid it says "melts ice in half the time of rock salt".

SO... Go get a huge bag of "Ice Melt" - Should be REAL cheap in the summer (if you can find it)
