I used to fan dry when I started with decent results. The first time I used a dehydrator I never looked back. 12 hours or so to cracker dry instead of a few days to cardboard like dry. Sometimes you can find dehydrators at goodwill or on CL for cheap.

Yes I understand how a dehydrator works.  I just meant what would be the best way to position the shrooms. Just sitting on a plate or something sounds inefficient. Was thinking of a way to set them up so air can flow through them on both sides, like sandwiched between coffee filters and hung up in front of the heater or something.

some sort of mesh rack or screen from a window would be best

Those grill racks made for camping would probably work near a fire/heater.

I used to use baking sheet pans with paper towels on them, and would rotate the fruits every so often. A window screen is a good idea though.

All right, I'll see what I can find laying around the house. Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it.

I went out and bought a dehydrator for around $40 yesterday.
It has only one heat setting at 70'C but has 5 racks and works great.

I put the half dried mushrooms in for 2.5 hours and it can be easily be turned into powder now. Should have just done this from the start!

Accurate information used to be harder to find, lots of us started off with ridiculous contraptions before discovering the ease of a dehydrator

Good for you!
