I disagree. It doesn't correlate to previous statements and puts your own judgement ahead of the examples.

Why not pray? It's just a way of showing someone that you care and that they are loved. They are not alone, you are reminding them they aren't going through this alone. It creates human bonds, it's essential to being a human - love I mean, not prayer, but look as it a means to an end. That end being human connectedness and compassion.

It's just a ritual. Perhaps rituals are our way of acting out our powerlesness, or perhaps they really work. The point is, if it helps people go through this existence more peacefully and less harmfully then it's beneficial in my book.

its just that deep down we are all about love, i dont care if you dont understand this now, im just tellng you straight up.  not everyone is on the same exact path as another to this love becuase of the understanding they have so far. what they have been through affects this path.  We are all trying to get there, even if we dont realize we are trying, its kind of amusing isnt it, how i just spout off all this shit and you dont get it.

All there is, is love. Everything else is just reaching out for it.  That is why people do the shit they do, they just want loved, even if they dont think that is what they want, that is what they are in reach for!  i dont know, i get it... :wink:

I dont understand your problem with prayer. I dont understand your need to "debunk" it so to speak.

Psyka said it best in another thread.

-This is like saying that everyone chooses a sober lifestyle, but those that are smoking marijuana are crying out for help because they don't understand this yet. No matter how much you challenge this idea, the person insisting on it will say stuff like, "You'll understand when you get older" or "There can be no other way but to realize this truth, you will come around"

If people challenge this, the person should be able to explain.

I agree. It looks like by claiming that his/her assertions are so obviously self-evident that challenging those assertions is evidence that the challenger is incorrect. It's really an informal logical fallacy employed as a rhetorical device (a cheap trick, IOW).

This is a long thread so i have to be carefull what i add to it...
first of all i want to offer some support to kottonmouth, who was called a rambling, hatefull lunatic for simply saying he trusts the validity of his own experience.
Do you all understand this oppinion? there is value in what i will call 'consensus reality' that is the combined agreements of large numbers of people... one example is the dictionary. It gives us common ground on which to base our discussions and get our ideas across. Kottonmouth was not saying that things like this, things that rely on the agreement of multiple people, are not valuable.

What he IS saying (and i apologize to kottonmouth if im getting this wrong) is simply that He doesnt need the consesnus of the whole population to make his own experiences valid. This does not make him a rambling lunatic, and i for one dont blame him for calling the person who said that an asshole, although a more accurate response would have been 'your probably a nice person but that particulat comment made you seem like an asshole'

If we all remember one thing well be ok and that is: if you disagree with an oppinion, dont show it by name calling. 'delusion, lunatic, madman, idiot' etc. rather explain politely what about that oppinion you disagree with.

Now on to the topic of prayer:

"Prayer is kata for the mind. " this is just perfect. amazing. Read my thread on 'invented gods' and i try to get this same point across.
When we pray for world peace every day, we are reaffirming the value of peace and making it that much more likely that we will stive in out actions and words to bring peace.

When we pray for forgiveness , we are forgiving ourselves so that we can move on with life. When we pray for love among men we are making it more likely that we will embody this desire.

Do you understand?

by the way KATA is a martial arts term. It refers to a series of ritualized or preplanned movements, that are performed with maximum technique. The point is that although performing KATA is not in any sense a fight, it will teach you the skills needed for a real fight.

Just like prayer for nucleur disarmament will not in anysense cause that to happen, it WILL remind you that it is something that should happen and something you should care about, thus making it more likely that you will do something in the physical world to bring that about.

Thats all i can say. Proceed to piss on it or agree with it or whatever, i might check in again in a while.

right on, im only saying my piece. Im just like all of you, i seek the TRUTH and nothing less. I have tested all the stuff i say to see if it is infact true, and the results are just awesome. As for there not being anything to explain, there isnt. You guys are just being whack, how are you gonna sit there and ask what love is? dont you ever feel it? dont you love your moms(even if you dont, there is someone you feel for), dont you understand the feeling that there is between loved ones? i am not stupid i know you do, so why are you acting like u dont know wtf love is?

LOVE. explaination?....how about examples, there are plenty, jesus is a good example. any religion points to love, just take a look.
