Mushrooms and Ceremony

I've been searching the site for discussion of the design and use of ceremony to take mushrooms as a group. I have found very little, which surprises me. The thing is over the past year I taken schrooms a few times on my own. Part of the experience has involved moments of involuntary chanting. The last time I took them I seemed to get a clear message that I was expected to take them with other people. Thinking this through has confirmed to me the value of creating a ceremonial context within which to take make the journey with others. I am aware that there can be no template or standard issue ceremony- but I would be interested to hear from anyone who takes mushrooms in a ceremonial context and especially if that involves chanting and drumming, because that is what I feel led to try and develop. Thanks!

I just usually smudge myself and my house, set my intention, then drum my little heart out. I love it, and it brings more meaning to my journeys. Oh yea, I also use rapé for meditating on the way up.

You may inform yourself about how they are/were taken in South America (like Mexico, Peru etc...) indigenous traditional rites and ceremonies, both communitary and shamanic.

Get yourself shamanic music(not from shitty 6h long YouTube videos). The music is actually half the experience in shamanism, and it's produced by the shaman itself, guided by the 'spirits'of the psychedelics.

So yeah search traditional indigenous stuff imo

Thanks for that. It's good to hear that just drumming enthusiastically does it for you- are you able to maintain the drumming through the peak parts of the trip or do you lay the drum aside?

Thanks Entheogenic Serpent, yes I have been looking into shamanic ceremonies from the Mazatec region. I'm interested to know what experiences people have of putting together ceremonies, how they combine traditional elements with personal inventions, but particularly anything related to chanting and drumming which is what most interests me. We will probably be taking the shrooms in woodland and the intention is to rely on the music of the forest and whatever we can create. I wonder if other people have had this experience of spontaneously and seemingly involuntarily starting to chant?

Hi Again Internal Traveler- Just looked up 'smudge' - yes, a Mexican friend, and the person with whom I am doing the ceremony just brought me back a bag full of copal from Mexico, so that will certainly form a part of the ceremony. In your experience what benefit does it have?

We light insence and candles. Say a thank you prayer to mother nature and start the process.


Once a month we have what we call church, where several people gather in a private forest to spend the day in nature.

We bring a large motar and pestle and everyone will put a piece of fruit in while saying what they feel is right. Once everyone has added their piece of fruit we light a small camp fire to boil the tea and cook food through out the day.

We usually  up in the creek at some point up till winter time. Its always a magical day in the forest, lots of energy!

I have been in ceremony on several occasions. Smudging is usually done with smouldering bundles of white sage. It is a ceremonial cleansing. The sage smoke purifies the air, and the recipient. Besides, it smells wonderful. We use white sage here at home frequently.

The details of ceremony can be what you create. No rules, so to speak. The important part is to establish an atmosphere and attitude of reverence.

Smudging cleanses the body, mind and tripping area of all negative energy. Of course it is the intention that truly matters during smudging. I smudge with sage, sweet grass or palo Santo. I try to use one of the 4 secred plants that a native american shaman would use. The 4 sacred plants are cedar, sweet grass, sage and tobacco.

Using rapé certainly clears my mind very well and keeps my thoughts directed at the intention I choose. Look it up, it is a common shamanic practice, and very useful.

I normally just drum until I begin to feel effects. I drum mostly to keep my mind on the intention. However, I've been trying more recently to actually try shamanic drumming to gain access to the lower world to meet my spirit animal, and I may try this next time during my peak

I guess it is that, like it's a way of establishing the setting and the seriousness and things like that- but I am more interested in the question of whether ceremony can in fact also be a kind of vehicle- whether by creating a carefully ordered context, the energies unleashed in the psychedelic experience can be contained and channelled...

I always begin by establishing a spiritually clean space by burning a frankincense based incense and chanting "be gone afar unholy ones; for this is a place of Light!", while walking counter-clockwise around my blast-off area. I do this as long as is necessary -until it just feels right. This settles my emotions and establishes the fact that something special is about to happen. Once the sacrament is consumed, I have a music playlist that I 'fall into'. I always trip alone so my playlist probably wouldn't help you with your situation.

To me, starting with ceremony and then continuing with ritual music or drumming or chanting is important because it becomes a focal point or beacon to bring you back to safety should things get weird, and they sometimes do on high doses. Peace.

To help answer your question a little -yes, I think ritual chanting/music etc. can channel energies making them available for use. A few years ago I had a nagging abdominal strain that was healed by pulsing a stream of energy into the area during a session and it hasn't bothered me since. Is this scientific? Anecdotal? Magical? I don't know, but the pain went away for good.
