Went out looking for Laetiporus today, didn't find any but decided to check out a cyan patch I had found last winter. I thought September 2nd would be too early, turns out I was actually a few days late. They're out there...

Yeah, I think it was probably a freak occurrence. It didn't seem like the weather was particularly conducive to fruiting, it was mid 60s and fairly dry. There were a few nights that gone down to 55F. This patch is relatively shaded and nearish some irrigation. I collected some stem butts and threw them on cardboard.

The first time I found this patch was mid January 2018 which is also on the edge of the main season window.

Psilocybe allenii seen a week ago in West Oakland in irrigated wood chip landscaping outside of a relatively new apartment complex.

I found these last week in an east bay industrial park. I was there for a work meeting and found these during a quick break as I was walking around in the parking lot on my phone.  I had to take a double take because I wasn't even thinking about mushrooms.  It was definitely one of my earliest finds and definitely my most unexpected.

It rained here a little but not enough for anything to come up. I looked for two days .
  It never rains here anymore. Lol

We have not had any rain.  These were in the landscaping outside of an office building.  In other words, irrigated.

Hey guys, with no rain in San Jose yet, where would I look for some actives? I have access to many school woodchips/mulch areas and there are many rose gardens around. Other than around sprinklers, I'm not sure where else to hunt. I would really like to take some spore prints for ID purposes. Any ideas where to hunt?

Anywhere they put down wood chips and irrigate them is a good place.  If they don't irrigate them you can still find actives there, but less often, and you have to wait for the rain. 

Sometimes you can see the red wood chips with Google Earth and find places that have a lot of them, like industrial parks that use the same landscaping crew for all the buildings.

Another sure bet is to hunt within 1 mile of anywhere I have ever lived, as I tend to throw spores and mycelium all over the place.

Alan, perhaps you visited my yard a few years back!?

I'm happy to report that my backyard allenii patch that jumpstarted my fascination with these organisms has returned:



I was very concerned that the raccoons that have been uprooting plants and turf all throughout the patch area on a near nightly basis would result in a lack of fruits but they've prevailed! Who knows how much they impacted the yield or perhaps the mycelial network sends fruiting resources towards undisturbed areas?



I had been avoiding spending time outside with all the smoke in the air lately so I got to the flush on the late side. Here's a shot of some young and old guys together:

I've learned from the best. I've only been hunting for a few years but 2/3 of my patches are within 1 mile of my house. I also spread myc / spores all around my lil section of town.
