Not that RR is the end all be all, but he did use this one for 10 years.  Pretty good for a duct taped prefilter.

I meant to post this pic before.  This hood is over ten years old and runs 4 to 5 hours daily.  It's still on the original HEPA filter.  I change the prefilter whenever I notice flow decreasing.  With a 24 X 24, you won't want a duct tape job, but you get the point.  Filter the air entering the blower.  Some guys build a box on top which surrounds the blower.  Match a filter to the top as a lid.

My bactincinerator/microincinerator arrived! I believe I got the impetus to purchase one from this thread a while ago, so I should at least share it here and thank whoever suggested it.

Yea use the prefilter. I built a little sealed box around my blower with a prefilter on top but honestly just attaching it to the blower intake like RR does in that picture is fine.
You only need to change it every few months depending on how much you work.I cut mine to size

Have you tried using a scalpel in it?  I want one but apparently you aren't supposed to insert a scalpel, just an inoculation loop.  I don't know their reason but I'd rather have this than a torch if I can use a scalpel.

I agree entirely. And if you have a cup of isopropyl to dip it into after to cool it down it expediates the process making sterile work so much faster

Yikes!!! Cool the scalpel in a blank agar dish, not ISO, ISO isn't sterile

:whathesaid:

Not to mention dipping a hot scalpel into iso probably isn't the smartest thing to do, no offense

The handle will get too hot if you leave it in longer than 5 seconds. I also rotate scalpels for this reason

Interesting, I just made a one piece top today by just siliconing a ring to the blade. What's your reasoning behind doing it that way?
