I haven't seen this done yet so I'll post it. Its an....xacto knife thing....that everyone uses to turn into some type of inoculation tool. I stuck a 16 gauge needle in it and shaped it up, and flattened it with some needle nose pliers. It turns red almost immediately in flame and works well for transfers. I stick it in the jar its sitting on to sterilize it in the pc and for a table during inocs. For me, Its

I did the same thing to make a loop except I used a tungsten element from a burnt out dehydrator. Heats red hit instantly. Yours looks like it would work pretty good to pull from slants. It's shape is kinda like the tool I use for that.

What do you pull from your slants with? I used to use a steel dental tool with a weird longish shaped loop

The scalpel tool I have now is skinny enough to grab tissue from so I switched. Just curious what you use in case there is something better I dont know about (which Im sure there is )

Mine is a dental tool meant for a dog's teeth. I might post a pic of it tomorrow lol.

Can you post some pics and a quick synopsis of how best to utilize a slant? (Just got two hefty mamas from a shroomery cat and have 0 experience with them).

Thanks in advance!

Vintage 7qt AA:

41.5 qt AA is on the right side of the stove. I have another 7qt on the way. I believe the 7qt models are the smallest AA had ever made and now their smallest is 10.5qts. I have not found any smaller AAs. The 7qt model holds 3 qt jars.

This one came with a basket like a sterilizer, except it's perforated:

It's got some gunk caked onto it that I'm gonna have fun trying to clean. I have another 7qt AA on the way that doesn't have this basket, but has a more traditional canning rack and a couple pans. There was a 3rd 7qt that I didn't get that did not have the basket, but had a rack and a couple trivets that fit this model. I wanted those trivets but missed the auction and the buyer wound up paying more for that than I did for either of my 7qt AAs.

It also had this plastic part that kinda clips onto the metal over pressure plug. Not exactly sure why. At first I thought it was like a deflector shield. But the metal over pressure plug doesn't look like it vents out the sides, but straight out the hole in the top. So I don't quite get why they had this piece.

I will be replacing the metal over pressure plug with a new excess pressure relief valve.

These pics are after removing the label and polishing it up and installing a new stopcock that's missing the deflector shield.

Here is the original label:

New Old Stock 1915½x Sterilizer.

Current similar model is the 1915x.

1915½x Sterilizer has gauge, stopcock with air exhaust tube, and metal Excess Pressure Relief Plug in the lid.

1915x Sterilizer has gauge, stopcock with air exhaust tube, red rubber Over Pressure Plug, and excess pressure relief valve in the lid.

Note the "½" on the label.

This unit is from a time when they polished these from the factory. Check out how polished up the handle tabs are. Then take a look at any modern PC with these metal tab handles. You will see a machine finish on the new models, no polishing.

Check out those prices. Also, note the included parafin stick for the seal. They don't include that any more. The only date indicator on anything is the 9/68. This unit was made before they date stamped the underside of the lids. So I know for sure its older than 1985 because my oldest date stamped cooker is an 85. The documentation with this unit could indicate it is possibly as old as 1968!! I have highlighted some important passages in the instructions. You can also see from the parts pictures that the weird over pressure plug is No. 75 Excess Pressure Relief Plug.

Then there was this disk wrapped in paper. I was expecting the standard trivet that is available now.

Instead I got this awesome heavy duty cast aluminum trivet!! It is compared to a standard trivet in the last few pics.

Totally new, no signs of usage whatsoever!! Look at that shine!!

I got this because I wanted a lid to fit my 921 and 930 that has no rubber overpressure plug. I can then mod the lid for higher pressure. You cannot buy new lids that don't have the hole for the rubber plug. I got this whole setup for less than a new lid!!

One more...
I just got this dehydrator like 2 weeks ago and I still haven't had the opportunity to put it to use. I have a few tubs going right now so its just a short matter of time before I get some use out of this bad boy.
