Mycologist217's Inventory of Mycology Supplies! What you'll need/want to Cultivate! * 10
    #22644972 - 12/12/15 12:54 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Greetings my fellow shroomerites, colleagues, and new cultivators! This is my write up on the supplies you will need and want to keep on hand to insure ongoing and smoothly managed mushroom cultivation as it applies to cultivating psilocybin cubensis! The following inventory will contain items only that I have personally used in logged grows here on the Shroomery and know to be acceptable and utilitarian in successful grows. Many of these items will not be required, but having all of them on hand will be very useful to the avid home mycologist! Furthermore, I hope this write up can serve as a decent one stop source for new cultivators to find out the things they need to buy and what they might not need! I will initially be covering supplies needed and approved for the PF TEK, Bulk grows using grains and monotub, and Agar work supplies. I feel like these are the areas most cultivators needing to consult this list will be curious about and I aim to provide them easy to cipher info! So without further adieu, Mycologist217 presents

INVENTORY OF NECCESARY, USEFUL, AND PROVEN SUCCESSFUL MYCOLOGY                      ----------------------------SUPPLIES FOR THE HOME MYCOLOGIST---------------------

-The notation *** will indicate an item is used across multiple teks and thus should be considered especially important to keep on hand (ie Paper Towels***)

The Basics
In my head cultivating cubensis starts with inoculations! The prudent among us have known for a long while now that inoculation is certainly the most vulnerable moments of our grows, and successful sterile inoculation technique is key for success no matter what TEK you might be using! There is a sleu of objects I associate with inoculation procedures and here they are:
-Decent Quality Stockpot with Snug Fitting Lid (PF Tek only!!! Can be used to steam sterilize BRF cakes)

if one wishes to move on to more advance grows....any of them...they will need at least a:

-Pressure Cooker: A pressure cooker is the go to sterilizing instrument for most home mycologists! They are a very affordable means to sterilize a whole myriad of media including: BRF, WBS, Oats, Rye Berries, Popcorn, Agar slants and plates, Scalpels and other tools, etc. Pressure cookers are going to be available online or at your local Ace Hardwares or WalMarts.

You want your pressure cooker to be able to maintain 15psi, as that is the standard measure we use when pressure sterilizing our tools, and substrates.

Once we have our sterilizing vessels secured it would make a lot of since to have a decent store of substrate components! If you are not using a pressure cooker (I.e. PF TEK), you'll definitely want a fair amount of the following on hand:

-Brown Rice Flour (BRF):
When selecting your brown rice flour you want something "organic" or all natural! The ingredient list should be "brown rice" or "brown rice flour" or something similar! This available at your local grocery store. I like:

BRF can be used with the PF tek as well as in bottle Tek substrate recipes. BRF cakes are considered to be very beginner friendly. They handle bacterial contamination very well and thus can provide a really good shot at success for new cultivators.

-Vermiculite*** (aka Verm):
Vermiculite is a kind of volcanic mineral that does not harbor life but rather holds water to keep our substrates well hydrated! For the PF TEK, fine grade vermiculite is recommended as it effectively has a much greater surface area and thus more effectively hold water. For my bulk grows I prefer course grade Vermiculite.

Vermiculite is a going to be a very important substrate component across lots of teks. In addition, it is also a very common component of casing layers. When used in casing layers it serves the same function as it does in substrates, water retention.

But Myco!!! My local stores only sell Brown Rice and Course Verm!!

Well do you drink coffee? Do you process food? Both coffee grinders, and food processors are excellent tools to use to mill your own Brown rice flour or process course vermiculite into fine vermiculite! I use this all the time:

Okay but I have a pressure cooker and want to inoculate grains for a bulk grow!
Well you'll need to test the waters and find out which grain you like but I prefer Wild Bird Seed and know the most about it!

So I recommend you get some:

-WILD BIRD SEED (WBS):
Wild bird seed is a term usually used to refer to a mixture of Red millet, white millet and Mila seeds! Very commonly bags of these seeds will also include black sunflower seeds which many growers separate out during prep! Wild bird seed is available at your local grocery stores and hardware stores and you can get enough for several grows for ~$5:

Of course wild bird seed is far from your only option. There are great alternatives that the veterans on these forums will swear are loads easier to prep than WBS. Some popular alternatives are:

-RYE BERRIES:
Rye berries are very very common grain spawn media, especially on these forums. They are praised for their ease of prep, but can be easily muddled of prepared incorrectly. They are available at local Ace Hardware stores very cheap or online:

-WHOLE OATS:
Whole oats are gaining more and more popularity in last several years due mainly to their ease of prep and very low cost. 50lbs of whole oats will run about 15$ from your local feed store, which is about 5$ less than 50lbs of Birdseed, not to mention they are less dense as is! I haven't seen many people using rolled, or cut oats, so whole oats is definitely the way to go as far as oats go!:

When working with these grains hydrating them is part of the prep and a commonly overlooked but super essential tool is a Wire mesh strainer:

When you have gotten familiar and start upping the scale of your grows, more effective straining devices are desirable! Screens work great! Collapsible/framed screens will be available at your local hardware store, or you can just buy screen and attach handles to it...all the same....i like to use this:

Okay, I have all that stuff but first I want to make sure I'm working with clean spawn not just gambling with a spore syringe!

Well for your initial inoculation substrates you'd want a decent supply of:
-Agar Agar Powder (agar)
This is a gelatin that comes from plants so vegans can eat jello too! You can find it online or at your local health food and vitamin store! I like:

-Potato Flakes (aka instant mashed potatoes):
You'll definitely want 100% real potato for this! Once again the ingredient list should just say "potato" or "dehydrated potato" or something very similar. This is available at your local grocery store.  once again I like:

-Dextrose:
This is the third primary ingredient for an Agar plate! It will also be available at the health food store you bought the agar at and if you are lucky they will also behave some

-Yeast.
I prefer "nutritional yeast"

That's a lot of DYI....is there a simpler alternative like premixed nutritious agar powder?
As a matter of fact there is! Many of the sponsors here on the shroomery sell:

MALT EXTRACT AGAR POWDER (MEA):
Malt extract agar is probably the standard on these forums. People love it for its ease of access and affordability! You can likely find The Potato Dextrose Agar premise powders also, but veterans on these forums will usually recommend starting with Malt Extract Agar powder:

That's going to wrap up substrate supplies I like to keep on hand, but remember that a lot of this work is considered a kitchen job by myself and during work with all of these substrate media I use things like:
-Mixing Bowls
-measuring cups
-digital scales
-whisks and spoons

I will add as a footnote to this section that Liquid Culture Substrates can be made using:
-Water
-100% Honey

For more information on Liquid Cultures, including construction of custom lids and proper preparation and sterilization, please refer to my LIQUID CULTURE HOW TO MANUAL

Do not be misled, Liquid Cultures can be made from any of a plethora of nutritional mediums. Malt is a very popular choice, but I have gotten quite proficient at Honey/Water LC's

And of course there are the variety of vessels that we store our substrates in during sterilization, inoculations, and initial colonization! These vessels in my case consist of mason jars of varying volumes with an array of specially modified lids! These lids are homebuilt using common household tools and a few items you'll have to acquire from your local WalMart or hardware store or the like.

Okay, well I'm doing the PF Tek, what kind of vessels and lids should I have on hand?

-8oz Widemouth Mason Jars:
These are the most commonly endorsed substrate vessel for colonization in the PF TEK.  Their reasonable size promotes even growth not prone to stalling and in my now fairly rich experience with the PF TEK offer no direct disadvantage to pint sized jars as far as flush sizes are concerned! My preferred brand comes with the bands and lids and is available at your local Hardware store and most grocery stores:

With these jars you will use a -Drill***- to put four 1/16" holes in each lid at the four compare points (north, south, east, and west)
But I don't have a drill, and I really don't want to buy one!
Well you could use a hammer and nail to make those holes in the lid but the hard truth is that a power drill is an EXTREMELY VITAL tool for a successful home mycologist, and it is certainly the most convienient avenue to constructing a SGFC (more on that later) but from hereforward I will assume you have access to a drill with an array of bits and tips

Okay I got the holes drilled so I need some?

-Micropore Tape***:
Micropore tape is one of the items you will need across multiple cultivation formats as it is a key component of many Gas Exchange filters! Micropore tape is going to be the tape found in the first aid section of your local pharmacy. Usually they will not prominently feature the word micropore but most times it is somewhere on the packaging. I prefer to use:

-Aluminum Foil***
Aluminum foil is by all means a required piece of cultivating equipment. It's primary use is to create a barrier around objects in the pressure cooker creating sterile packages! We cover all jars in the Pressure cooker or stock pot with foil,so that water does not wick through our tape and compromise our jars, and in other grows to make sure our GE filters are not similarly compromised. We can wrap swabs and scalpels in foil before loading them in our pressure cooker. No matter what you are doing you will need this stuff on hand:

-keep in mind that you can use pint size jars if you like for the PF tek...you could use regular drinking glasses with aluminum foil lids....it's all about what works for you.

What about the jars and lids for grains?

-Quart size Regular Mouth Mason Jars with bands and lids:
These are what most of use are inoculating our bird seed and other grains in. Some people use bags with similar modifations for GE, but I like the reusability and versatility of mason jars. I never get tired of having tons of them!

-Plastic Storage Jar Lids:
These are lids for your mason jars that are made out of plastic! In practice I have come to find that they are much preferable to metal bands and lids across all platforms save the PF Tek. These are one piece as opposed to two (band and lid) and make more much easier work in Agar transfers if using jars for Pasty Plates. I prefer Ball brand because that's what I can find and they are available in both wide mouth and regular mouth varieties! These are available at your local Ace Hardware or online.:

Synthetic Filter Discs (SFD):
These are discs made of synthetic filter material very similar to polyfill. In fact PolyFill can be ironed into sheets and with enough processing can be made into effective SFD's. Things like EZ Felt can also be manufactured into filter discs, but they are available cheap in bulk online:

The regular mouth size of these plastic lids fit the Ball brand 4oz herb shaker jars! I have grown to love these jars for agar work as they are much more  easily seen through than the 8oz wide mouths, and have much much flatter bottoms...I won't make these a bullet point...but just know you can get them at Ace Hardware.
Four packs of the four oz jars are now available with the plastic storage lids included!
I use these jar for all of my agar plates now:

It is getting very popular to use these plastic storage lids unmodified for agar plates

Do I need more materials for the lids of Grain jars?
Yes and no....When I first started working with grains I went all out with both a Tyvek filter and a polyfill filter, which was okay really because I was working with Syringes that could inoculate jars without opening the lids. Now that I use agar to inoculate grain I feel, comfortable just using a polyfill filter in a 1/4" hole drilled smack in the the center of my jar lids.

-Polyfill** (aka poly):
Polyfill is another item we use across several stages of cultivation. It serves the function of filtering air to sufficient levels. It is used in lid mounted gas exchange filters and in the air intake and out holes of monotubs. It can also be ironed into sheets of filter to be cut into home made synthetic filter discs (SFDs). It is available at your local Walmart or sewing or fabric or crafts stores:

-Tyvek***:
So this is one of those objects that gives new cultivators a hard time. Its tough identifying what to use as your tyvek filter well there are several options. A lot of folks on these forums like US postal envelopes and that's cool, but what I like and have never had any hiccups using are these found at the local hardware store, life time supply for 3$:

You might notice the image on the right does not say tyvek....these will work fine I've used them successfully literally dozens and dozens of times.

BUT ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO JARS?
As a matter of fact there is. The vessels you house your colonizing grains in can be as creative as you'd like as long as you make sure they can be sterilized, and provide Gas exchange for your culture. A very popular alternative to Jars are:

-Spawn Bags:
These are polypropylene bags that can be custom made or ordered premade in bulk. A properly constructed bag will include a gas exchange filter (can be custom built using SFDs) and can be sealed or tied after filling and before sterilization! They are a great alternative to jars as they allow for larger spawn quantities per inoculation as well as much less dishes to wash. These are available from most of the Shroomery's sponsors:

Okay! But I'm wanting to use agar too remember? I can't bring my old supplies back for that can I?

As a matter of fact, you can! These forums are chocked full of TEKs called "no pour" that will allow you to make agar plates in your old 8oz mason jars just modify new lids with your tyvek and micropore tape! Or you could use a "pour tek" but that will require equipment such as:

-Agar Pour Bottle:
Whiskey bottles work great, you'll want a glass one that can fit in your pressure cooker:

-Sterile Petri Dishes (reusable glass or single use plastic)
-Cling Wrap/Seran Wrap/Parafilm:
Used for wrapping Petri dishes.

When I research agar I see a lot of people talking about "Pasty Plates". What are Pasty Plates and what do I need to have on hand to utilize them?

Pasty Plates is the name given to a very popular no pour agar plate brought to us by our very own Pastywhyte. They utilize tyvek/micropore tape gas exchange filters installed on the lids of:

-Glad Mini Rounds:
These 4oz plastic storage container of made of PP5 plastic which can withstand the heat produced during sterilization in the pressure cooker. They are preferred by many cultivators for their ease of access and affordability. 8 of these containers will run you just around $2.50 in your local grocery store. Remember you can use sililar containers such as the 4oz Ziplok rounds so long as they are PP5 plastic, but the original tek calls for:

Earlier you mentioned Bottle Teks. What are Bottle Teks, and what do they require?
Bottle Tek is the umbrella term given to a form of mushroom cultivation that uses a single vessel throughout the entirety of the grow. The Substrate is colonized, cased, and fruited all from within the same vessel. These vessels are usually fairly large, a liter or more, and can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Moreover, the substrate recipes people use are varying also. And different from cultivator to cultivator. These substrates can be tricky to work with as they must incorporate all nutrition and hydration the mycelium will need throughout the life cycle.

-Larger Containers for "Bottle Teks":
The Large pp5 ziplok and Glad ware containers are very popular for these techniques. They allow for a decent amount of substrate and also make for easier harvesting than traditional glass jars. Availible at your local grocery store (MAKE SURE IT IS PP5 PLASTIC:

@@@New Tek@@@
-Match sticks/Popsicle/craft sticks:
Our colleague here at the Shroomery, stareatclouds, has recently shared with us His New Tek involving Pasty Plates and craftsticks. He sterilizes a splinter of wood in his agar plates to make for one time transfers without using a scalpel!! Brilliant work! So if you have any kind of wooden sticks on hand to try this with, please do, and let stareatclouds know how it works for you.

But Myco! Earlier you told me I can make Liquid Culture out of water and honey, what kind of jar and lid do I need for that?
-It does not matter what size jar you prepare your liquid cultures in. The lid is much more important. Some people like to put things like stir rods and marbles into their LC jars to help agitate them. With my LC lids I use two 1/4" drilled holes and mount a sophisticated Gas Exchange Filter in one using polyfill, tyvek, and brass plumbing inserts and in the other hole I install a Self Healing Injection Port (SHIP) using:

-High Temp Silicon Gasket Maker:
This is a type of silicon that you squeeze out of a tube and it set and cures as an air tight gasket! Great for attaching things like filters to things like lids, and I've seen it done to put filters on monotubs also! This available for ~$4 at your local autoparts store and they sell it at my Wal-mart and Ace Hardware:

You might be understanding how you can combine these items into a Liquid Culture lid, but just in case you can't...here's what it looks like:

There is a wad of polyfill inside the crimped plumbing insert. This insures an always dry filter with a jar that can be tipped anyway. The SHIP allows users to inoculate with spore or another LC, as well as allowing for easy withdrawal of LC to syringe for use with inoculations!  Which leads to:

-Sterile Syrynges with Needles:
These are used to introduce spores or liquid culture or other liquid inoculant to substrate media. In my experience, I have not had any problems rested losing the syringes and needles from used commercially obtained spore syringes (after using the spores for legal purposes). These are available online in bulk for very affordable prices.

That's going to wrap up the vessels and lids section! Remember that as you explore mycology and understand more about the environments you need to create to cultivate cubensis you will begin to understand how to designate or create you own unique vessels and lids! Once we have our substrate prepared, contained, and sterilized it's time for sterile inoculations! What are the things home mycologists will want to keep on hand in good stock in their inoculations lab?

-70% Isopropyl Alcohol***:
This is the most trusted sanitizing agent in our field! We purge our equipment with this, we flush our work surfaces and hands with this...this is our stuff. This works by drying things out which is why 70% is preferred over 91%.  Never run out of this! This will be found cheap in your pharmacy or first aid isle.

-Paper Towels
You will want a healthy stock of paper towels on hand at all times. Nice ones...

-Antibacterial multipurpose cleaner with bleach:
Primarily used for batting down contaminates in the air in a still air box/lab:

-Aerosol form Disinfectant:
Much better than the above cleaner which I now just use for surfaces....the aerosol disinfectant such as Oust are what most users on this forum are using in their still air labs:

-Alcohol Lamp with Clean Burning Fuel:
These are used for flame sterilizing syringe needles and scalpels and inoculation loops. You can construct one of these lamps using an 8oz jar with the band and Lid and a cotton ball. I run mine off denatured alcohol...clean burning fuel:

-Exam Gloves and Surgical Face Masks:
These are to create a barrier between your skin and mouth and your working environment! They are essential components of still air work and are both available at your local pharmacy:

-Laminar Flow Hood**:
The Laminar Flow Hood is a machine that pulls air from the work space in through a blower and out through a HEPA filter in a means that creates a lateral laminar flow. The HEPA filter should scrub the air down to a very clean state to be working with genetics in front of. They are fairly easy to build but the parts are fairly expensive:

-Still Air Box (SAB)***:
The SAB is easily among the most important pieces of equipment you must make or obtain for this hobby. It is nothing more than a box with holes cut for arm and hand access to create a still air working environment for inoculation and agar work. Unless you have advance equipment like a Laminar flow hood you MUST have a still air box to succeed here. Past that, some tasks such as cleaning up dirty agar cultures, and making spore prints must be done in a still air box rather than a laminar flow hood:

-All metal scalpel or craft knife, and inoculation loop, cotton tipped applicators:
Used for agar work inoculations. Inoculation loops can be purchased online or home made out of simple objects like bread bag ties. Cotton tipped applicators (q-tips) are sterilized in foil packages before use...in fact all these tools get sterilized in the PC before use. A suitable knife with blades can found at your local hardware store or hobby store:

Keep in mind a-tips are okay to use if you individually wrap them in foil and sterilize as needed.

That is going to wrap up our section on sanitizing agents and inoculation tools! Now it's time to get into supplies for fruiting! And we are going to start with the world famous:

-Shotgun Fruiting Chamber (SGFC)****:
The shotgun fruiting chamber (SGFC) is widely considered the be all end all of fruiting chambers for PF tek cakes and other smaller scale grows. It is usually constructed from a 66qt plastic tote with latching lids with 1/4" holes drilled every two inches grid wise across all 6 sides of the vessel! Why they can be whatever size you want...I've seen trouble fruiting cakes in smaller SGFCs.:

-Perlite:
Perlite is the medium by which humidity is maintained inside a SGFC. Before installation, perlite is rinsed and soaked. Air moving through the holes on the bottom of the SGFC. Carry water off of the perlite the. Up onto and off of the cakes maintaining humidity and triggering pinning. Avoid perlite with added nutrients...you only want 100% perlite like this:

Okay, but I want to build a monotub. Can I use my SGFC to do that?
Sadly, no. But if you are a serious home mycologists you are going to be buy your fair share of 66qt totes with latching lids! Past that you will want a SGFC around for fruiting cakes that are testing isolate genetics and fruiting behaviors! You will want to build you monotubs from untouched totes, but don't worry they are endlessly reusable!

-66qt Plastic Tote:
These are the work horse of our fruiting chambers! They are ideal for constructing both SGFCs and Monotubs! You want them to be clear with latching handle kids! They are available in Walmarts and Target and online!:

-Coco Coir:
Coconut Coir is a substrate material that comes from coconut husks! It does not harbor contamination very readily and is a premier choice for bulk substrate in monotubs along side things like straw and manure. Coir is usually pasteurized with vermiculite and gypsum before use. It can also be used in casing layers. You can find this in some pet stores but I buy mine from Here. I prefer to use this:

Is coco coir my only option for bulk substrates?
No! There is a whole world of bulk substrate options, coir is very popular in many mainstream tells across this forum; however, there are several popular alternatives including:

-Straw (Wheat or Rye straw works fine):
Straw is a substrate that works well for growing cubensis using certain teks. Straw gets properly cleaned and pasteurized before grain spawn is added. Straw is praised for its extreme value, as 50lb bales cost less than 5$ in most states, which is why straw is commonly used in substrates for growing gourmet mushrooms that are sold fresh for maximum profits!

Horse Manure (Aka HPoo)
Horse manure is a very popular alternative to coir because it can be found abundantly and freely in areas with horses. It requires proper pasteurization to use a bulk substrate but it's water retention and texture, colonization speed, and fruiting potential are all great! Of course some species like the Panaeolus cyanescens must be grown on manure opposed to coir. Must be dried then rehydrated to field capacity:

-Gardening Gypsum:
Gypsum, or Calcium Sulphate is a nutrient rich resource that we incorporate into our substrates! It is not required but extremely beneficial!availible at your local garden supply store.  I like to use this:

when coir, vermiculite and gypsum are combined to make a substrate we call that CVG

-Jiffy Mix Seed Starter:
This is a premixed casing layer! It is sold at wal-mart and contains ~50/50 peat moss/coir and lime)
I get this for <$5:

But MYCO!!! I just can't find Jiffy Mix!!!!
You'll need:

-Peat Moss:
A primary component of cubensis casiny layers. Available at your local garden supply store. I like to use:

-Hydrated Lime (calcium carbonate):
Another primary component of the casing layer it serves to buff the pH and promote a healthy microclimate! Available at your local gardening supply store I like to use:

-Meat Thermometer:
This is more accurate readings while pasteurizing substrates and casings. Available at your local grocery store. I use this:

-5 Gallon Bucket w/ Lid:
Not required but super useful in mixing bulk substrates, hydrating them, and has been proven to be an acceptable vessel for pasteurizing your CVG substrates! Available at your local hardware store!

But no matter which fruiting chamber you're working with you will want to have a very nice quality:

-Mister/Spray Bottle:
This is for misting your substrates and keeping them hydrated! I bought this one and it mists very efficiently right down to the last drop! Available online or at your local hardware store:

-Can Liner:
These are used in monotubs to insure that side and bottom pinning doesn't occur. I like black ones but now people are starting to use clear more and more.

-Duct Tape:
Because it turns no no no into mmmm mmmm mmmm....no but seriously we use it to tape up our monotub holes during colonization prior to fruiting.

-a Box Fan or two:
Use to circulate air in the monotub grow room! Also can be used in homemade dehyrdrators!

There are a few optional pieces of equipment you may or may not wish to use. I like to use them sometimes:

-Space Heater with Thermostat control:
Keep your colonization closet at decent temp
-dehydrator:
Used to dry your mushrooms! A coil, a fan, and a vented vessel! Can be store bought; I built mine:

-Inoculation Garb:
Clothes worn during inoculations...clean long sleeve shirt and pants.minalso wear a chef's bandanna to keep my hair up and away.

And then there are a few items to throw away cause you won't need:
-Hygrometers.....fuck them
-website or store bought grow kits!

And that's going to wrap it up for now! If you made it through this list, thanks very much for reading! I hope you found it informative and helpful! If you are a new cultivator please use the links in my signitures to find my grow logs which will detail how to use all these items to cultivate mushrooms! Please feel free to add any items I may have missed to the list by posting a response below! Once again thanks for your support and please keep doing magical things here guys!-

Try using thick 3 mil clear plastic drop for liners over trash bags! A 3 dollar roll will line 10 to 20 tubs and it works much better. The water tension sometimes hold trash bags to the walls instead of shrinking with the substrate. Drop cloth won't. And you can see your substrate thru a clear liner to see if there are any un colonized spots during spawn run or side/bottom pins

Or you could use heavy duty contractor bags.....1 bag can line 4 tubs if cut right.

The ones from Home Depot are 3 mil thick.....50 come in a box.....a box costs about $25.....thans 200 tubs lined for $25.

Wouldn't you want 91% iso over 70% for drying things out? 70% has 30% water which will hydrate more than the 9% water in the 91% iso.

70% kills more bacteria and mold mycelium because they can't help but try to absorb the water content.

The extra water content in 70% vs 90% aids in penetrating cell walls more efficiently.

The best mixture for sanitizing is 70%.

Those wide mouth half pints are nearly extinct now. The only place I've seen them is in the Kroger Deli. $3.99 each full of pie or something. Sometimes I see them for $1.99 when they've been marked down because they're about to expire.

Supposably, Ace hardware has them.

Thanks for putting this list together. It made me realize how much stuff I've accumulated trying to get into this hobby, and that I enjoy acquiring tools and supplies!
