The polyfill is... not for filtering contamination.  If that were a concern having the top holes open would defeat the entire purpose.

:whathesaid: substrates are spawned in open air. They are already covered in contaminant spores by the time fruiting conditions are introduced.

quick question: if after a few hours after fanning the geolite (in my case) starts
looking dry and cakes no longer glisten, is that a good indication that i am having enough air movement going on in there?

Geolite doesn't belong in a SGFC either its in no way a replacement for perlite. Geolite will dry out pretty quick and be a good indicator of nothing.

you may want to read these things out loud to yourself before you post them for all to see.
in the mean time i made a new thread, so to get this one back to monotubs, here's mine:

it's 18 liters / 19 quarts and nice and high. i'm hoping to grow some pans in this
but most likely i will do a test run with cubes first.
notice the revolutionary improvement over the basic design: pvc pipes to hold the polyfuzz.
they are about 1.25" in diameter and at 3" up from the bottom giving me 2,5" of substrate and 0.5"
for the casing layer. it seemed appropriate for the tub size.
i have since made some caps to close them off for colonising.

Just a easy question,

why does he put a black bag in the bottom of his mono?

Can't he just fill the substrats in the bottom?

Clear or black bag to prevent side pins and make it easier to clean and remove to harvest

thank you and do you have to take any caution with the black bag for contamination?

No you're already using your bare hands to mix the substrate and spawn. The trash bag isn't a concern, you're also doing it in open air. At this point sanitation and sterility don't matter basic cleanliness is better than being sloppy though

Alright

since you're here I will ask you an other small question, last time I did a mono, I only used peat moss and water 50%50 and I cutted my pf cake and mixed with the *casing* if we may call it like that.

Should I add something other then peat moss and water to get better fulshs ?

Peat moss isn't a bulk substrate its used as a casing only. It's meant to provide a pinning surface not to be mixed with spawn.

ok so at this point I should just use a bulk substrate over a casing layer right? I guess it would be only but better.

+ I think you don't need casing layer with a substrate layer Am I ok ?

Casing a bulk substrate isn't necessary

Dude... your understanding of bulk substrates and terminology is pretty bare, do some reading so bod doesn't have to walk you through the whole thing:

Hey Frank I was wondering if you could give an opinion on using faux silk made of polyester to cover the holes. The fine thread type used in boxer shorts or for bed sheets. I was thinking of maybe layering, cross-hatching and ironing some sheets of it together. Do you think it could work? If so, how many layers thick would you make the top and bottom ones?

I'd greatly appreciate any input from someone more experienced. Thanks.
