PMP ceramic briquets ?
    #2202349 - 12/26/03 03:01 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Well, I think I screwed up building my pod. There is no place around here which sells hydroton or geolite or whatever you want to call it, and I remember reading that lava rocks make a good substitute. So I call the hardware store asking if they have any and they say they do. So I go to the store and buy them, only realizing after the fact that they are ceramic briquettes. I use them in my pod only to notice that they have this slimy coating on them. At first I thought it was no big deal as long as my cakes don't touch it directly. After a few days of operation, I notice a bunch of suds in there. I tried rinsing and soaking them in water a few times, but it doesn't seem to do much good, the residue still remains. I went to look online to see what that coating was to see if I could find something to dissolve it. I couldn't find anything, but I also found a few places that mentioned that ceramic briquettes are also non-porous, which is a bad thing. Condensation never really built up in my pod, but I just attributed that with the cold conditions in my room. So, can anyone help me with some information? I think I may be stuck with some bunk rocks.

they sell bags of replacement lava at hardware stores and fireplace stores usually overpriced.  there is also a type of pumace stone blocks used to scrape crap off of toilets that will work.  spending lots of money for few mushrooms. :frown:

Go to a bigger gardening center and get some perlite. If there are none, order a BIG bag of it over the net. In the meantime you could just mist your pod a lot more until the bag arrives.

tchyted was onto something also.

Yes you want the Geolite or lava rock that is used in landscaping.
