In the teks it says to use geolite or lava rock but no store near me sells that. the only lava rock they sell is the big chunks.
could i just use like 3-4 inches of perlite and get the same results?

I as far as I know the perlite works as well. Im not sure how big the lava rocks you see are, but if there the kind you find in the big bag in the gardening section those will work too. Thats what I use and each rock is about an inch or maybe a little more wide, but it seems to work just fine for me.

ya thats what i saw. i figured theyd be too big. would i just put a 4-5 inch layer of those on the bottom and sit the cakes on top?
if you dont mind me asking, what did you do?
also how do i dry perlite? its smellin like wet old socks lol]

dry in an oven its a rock, it has an extremely high melting point (being a volcanic rock and all) just put it on a pan, turn that badboy up to BROIL or whatever the highest is, and let it go for however long.
and in concur, lava rocks are a cheaper, effective alternative to perlite. two bags of the garden stuff that above poster mentions is more than enough for a big size tub.
but yes, 4-5 inches of perlite would otherwise work.

id be happy to use the lava rocks i just didnt know if i could use just that since the rocks seem huge.
so i can put about 5 inches of lava rock, 2.5-3 inches of water and p[lace my bubble wands on the bottom? then sit cakes on lava rocks?

rgr that, though i would put something between your cakes and the lava rocks.
like aluminum foil, little squares for each cake.
or the cake lid, if you want.
thats to prevent water logging and contaminations being spread via the water below.

ok, i just rebuilt my PMP. first i used perlite. it worked pretty good. i was happy. but i wanted to try somethign new. got lava rocks. cleaned em, steralized. then got 2 12" bubble wands put one on each side. hooked it up to control valves to my air pump. then i put just enough water to cover the wands. then filled with about 3" of lava rocks. humidity is 100% never had that using perlite. this works great! i cant wait to get my cakes in there.
that should be good for FAE. is your box completely sealed??? i run "monkey snot" along mine to make sure it seals and have 6 holes about 3/8" with polyfil. works great

I told you people when I invented the PMP that lava worked good. I know it looks funny as hell setting up but as you now know it works pretty well
This is the first PMP. You guys and your little tweeks have taken it much further then I thought it would ever go.
Damn, If I'd have only started a PMP site and started selling em.

Magash...Is the PMP ideal for casings or is it just better suited for cakes? I've got three Shotgun FC's right now and I have no problem keeping the RH in the upper 90's. My only real problem is that I'm not home at all during the day. I leave at 7:30 and don't get home until 8:30 at night. My roommate is there until lunch so I get him to fan them while he's there. Just wondering if this will be a much better set up for me. This looks awesome and I'm thinking about stoping at Lowes and Wal Mart on my way home to get supplies to make one. Also, where can I find the lava rocks? Thanks for your help...
Not trying to hijack this thread...sorry!!!

the PMP works for both casings and cakes. lava rocks can be found in the gardening and landscaping section of home depot of lowes or wherever. they come in 50 lb bags, red or black usually. just ask a store clerk where you would find landscaping rocks and pebbles.
