PC on ceramic/flat top stove - will it crack it?
    #5415503 - 03/18/06 10:14 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I've read that using a PC on top of a flat top/ceramic stove may crack or damage it.... has anyone worked with this type of stove?

Is there anything you could do to too make it safe? some sort of external burner plate I could place on top?

My manual specifically states that the cooker CAN be used on ceramic, glass or induction-style cook tops. Where did you hear this information?

A loaded PC will either CRACK the surface, or burn out the electronics.
Start looking for a resturant or lab grade hot plate.

why would it be any diffrent than a pot of boiling water ?
the cooker will not get above 250f, BTW chef when your cooker gets up to presser you turn the stove down to just high anuff to keep 15 psi
my really big Pc (14 quart jars) runs my stone at 3.5 to keep 15 psi

on the other hand frying something in a skillet would be two times as hot or hotter

afoaf of mine uses a propane burner like for a turkey deep fryer to run his pc b/c he was nervous about your same issue. only thing is the cost of gas. but that seems to not matter too much

Didn't know you weren't supposed to but I have run my 16gt mirro on my flat top stove at least half a dozen times with no problems.

Yes I was talking about cracking the stove surface, and yea those stoves are expensive. I was reading it in a cooking magazine.

@Delinquentes: What brand are you using that says it is ok??

I also see there is a warning on this site for the All-American A-910 (10 qt.)

Quote:

Please note: This item is not recommended for use on Glass, Ceramic or Flat Top Stoves.

The weight of this canner may cause the glass/ceramic to break, also the diameter of this canner is larger than most burners, and may cause heat to transfer outward and damage the surrounding surface.

That warning is for an AA 910.
LOL, an AA 941 full of bags weighs about 76 to 80 lbs.

Ya the AA manual specifically warns against using them on glass topped stoves because of the weight. At least my 930's manual does.

In that warning, what type of damage could be done with wider heat transfer "to the surrrounding surface"?

My bad. I didn't see your post Chef. The warning in the manual is the same as what you posted.

To answer your question though, it doesn't say 'what kind' of damage. Just damage.

Well maybe "just damage" is not so bad then. lol

How about this idea?  What about placing the pc somehow in the oven right above its burner or possibly on the burner supported somehow.... and leave the oven door open?

How about this idea...

Don't use your pressure cooker on a flat top stove!~

find some other type of heat source.

agar gave you some options...I'd listen to him if I was you.

Yes over burner = bad idea.

No way to control how much the oven burner will keep heating up, unless I hack its thermostat/sensor somehow.

I use a propane burner that is packaged as a 'turkey cooker' at wally world. This way you get a nice 6 gallon stainless steel cookpot as well. It comes in really handy. It's downfall is you need to use it outside.

How about this? The little bottle should last 4 hours... I figure I could set it on both burners.
