Re: Protein powder and pre-workout supplement causing male pattern baldness [Re: Uzziel]

What would be excessive? There may be a connection with baldness in some protein shakes that contain something that can mess with your DHT, but I think it's more genetic than anything.

My roommate is 22 and balding.  He works out all the time and drinks a bunch of protein shakes.

Take that for what it's worth.  This thread is making me curious :strokebeard:

Could be genetic, but at 22 he may be taking more than just protein as far as supplements. Does he have gyno at all or acne on his face or back? Is he huuuuuge?

It's really too hard to say exactly how much, but there is generally no need to take more than the recommended level of protein. If you DO decide to, make sure it's spaced out EQUALLY in the day otherwise that protein just gets converted into energy since we do not store protein like fats.

You can find a list of that at webMD:

http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/lifestyle-guide-11/protein-powder?page=2

There has been tons of research done on protein and yet still I read too much from "body builders" that you need AT LEAST 1.5g/lb.... I am sure there are plenty of those folks here as well that swear it's the only way to see optimal gains....pfft.

If you do resistance training you're going to need more protein than the RDA. Tons more or you wont be able to move the next day. It's for repair and I have heard of people taking 1-1.5 grams per pound of LBM.
If you have a clean diet your body will tell your brain what it needs. Carbs for fuel and protein for repair. I've lifted all my life, but I'm not all thick necked, veiny, and orange looking though.

It's a healthy addiction I have always needed to break free from bad lifestyles in the past.

Well if you even bothered to read the link.....

Quote:
The maximum amount of protein that most adults can use per day is 0.9 grams per pound of body weight.

So yeah, keep telling me how even body builders need 1.5g/lb. The only exception to this rule would be if you were on steroids, which is a whole different ball game anyway.

Carbs are fuel and repair. You need very little protein for actual repair....and yes, I've lifted weights my whole life and been a Tennis Athlete since I was 14.

Oh well, believe whatever you want

Half of your body weight in pounds, converted to grams is ideally what you need for your muscles to repair quickly if you work out regularly.

i.e. I weigh 160 +/- 5 lb's so I ingest 80 g's of protein daily.

Around 1/3 of your daily intake of protein should be consumed within 30-60 minutes after your workout.
Waiting longer than that doesn't do much for muscle repair.

To break it down further, you're literally ripping your muscles every time you work out.
Protein makes it so that those tears are healed in 1/2 to a 1/4 of the time compared to not ingesting anything after working out.

This is information I learned a bit over a decade ago so it might be outdated. It's worked for me wonderfully throughout my life though.

Also you guys that buy those flashy, "get big fast" protein powders really should think about switching it up.
That stuff is not so good for you for various reasons (google it as I don't remember the exact undesired effects). Biochem brand is the only powder I'll put in my body. It's organic pure whey made from grass-fed cows and whatnot :snub:. A couple bucks more but worth it IMO/IME.

Comparing an average adult to a pro body builder or lifter is laughable.  You can drink to much water and you can take way to much protein.  I rather take justttttt a little too much protein then not enough.

Eggs in the morning, beef at lunch, whey protein right after a lift, chicken for dinner.  I think that's quite healthy and meets my requirements.  Oh and I drink smoothies and water all day with a bowl or 2 of pasta in there.

You taking any type of testosterone or prohormone?  that is the only thing that will do it.

How old are you?  My hair started a receding line at about 18 then stopped, still have a thick head of hair and done steroid cycles over 20 years.

Although I know some people that went almost completely bald by 30 years old, naturally.

My hair currently looks like Rob Zombies in my pic...

You been on cycle 20 years? your liver must hate you

Re: Protein powder and pre-workout supplement causing male pattern baldness [Re: lifeiswhatyoumake]

from my understanding, male baldness typically has to do with the conversion of testosterone into Dihydrotestosterone and it's subsequent build up on the scalp.

DHT is also more potent than testosterone in terms of adrenal affinity interestingly

so maybe when you started working out, you started producing more testosterone which in becoming more available also made DHT more available. i'm willing to bet money it wasnt the preworkout.

as many others have suggested though, it's probably genetic.

No protein or pre workout supp causes male pattern baldness. You're not even balding. Good excuse to post a giant photo of your mug though. I remember taking the original Ultimate Orange pre-workout drink. I think there was more than effedrine in those first batches.

That picture is not of me, it's some dude on Google images.
and dang effedrine in a pre-workout sounds dangerous.

Hate to break it to all you protein junkies but excessive protein causes hair loss, among other problems. It isn't the powder that's the problem necessarily either, it's the fact your body doesn't need nearly as much as people shove in it, especially the up and coming athletes who think they know it all because they fucking googled some shit

Bullshit. Hair loss is genetic

I think I'll take advice from powerlifters and bodybuilders thank you. Thats like trying to build a 5 story building with enough materials for an add on garage.
