Okay so does anyone else wanna shape up for the summer? I think we should have a motivation group - ya know?! We got like 2 months before the hardcore Summer hits.
Anyone wanna do it? (btw - you will be forced to state measurements and weight)

I have no choice already. I'm working landscaping construction hauling huge ass bricks all day, all summer. I'm already in good shape. So I'll just get in real good shape.

And up, and click. And back, and click.... Really, though, I was thinking the same thing. I have some weights, but I haven't used them since the last time it was take-your-shirt-off weather. I have a pretty notable spare tire after a winter of eating fast food and drinking.

Retaining walls and other hardscaping is in my very near future. Hard work, but the springtime sun is always nice.

Yeah I am down. I could spare to lose about ten pounds of fat and gain about 15 in muscle. I been doing the landscaping thing too the past week. So I am on my way to work of the winter lazy fest. Already getting a nice tan as well. So maybe I shall start choking down the light beers instead of the heavy porters and stout. Ditch that fackin fast food. And pick up my salad and smoothie diet.

Nope never drank a light beer. Gaged once on a coors light and never sipped one again. Regular bud is light enough for me for now. But I will soon turn to the super light stuff.
By the way I am glad you guys are both landscapers. I am also. But we kinda do it all. Pavers, rock walls, gardening, mulching, and shrubs. What ever it is we will do it if the money is right. I hate the Keystone walls though. Tair your hands up hardcore.

not really I just started a few weeks ago. It's not that hard really, just labor intensive. But it does take a lot of energy and dedication to stay out there 11 hours a day cutting bricks and unpacking pallet after pallet after pallet after endless pallet of pavers. I'm talking about a 700+ foot driveway..blah.. at least soon we'll be out of the front yard and under the shade of some trees while we work...

Count me in! I've tried to start doing that Winsor Pilates, but I pulled a muscle in my chest so I have to cool it for a little while. I want to be in top shape by the gathering. That is my goal date. I will post measurements when I get a measuring tape.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!

that's me. kinda skinny (vegan, so no fast food or shitty processed stuff) and been eatin potatoes, starchy things all winter. looking forward to lots of veggies and greens this summer. been biking all winter long, along with lots of nordic skiing and running when it was clear out (despite it being zero faranheit and icy/snowy as all getout). so um, yeah, i iguess i will run more now and ski less, or um, not at all, they dont' slide along roots and dirt that well. where was i going. oh yeah, to all of you inside folks, go out and run, fastest way to get into shape. here is a quick guide to getting started if you have never before: go outside, lightly jog for a minute, walk for a minute (or until you get your breath back) do this for 15 minutes, then turn around and go back home keep doing this, like 3-4 times a week, trying to SLOWLY increase duration between walking, total running time. don't worry about distance after a couple weeks, you should be jogging a mile just to warm up before stretches. you won't have to walk at all. and should feel confident running 5+ miles in under an hour. have fun and oh yeah, you'll never feel more clear or healthier in your entire life. after a while you get addicted to it, cause you get done and feel SO DAMN GOOD!

well okay - get in shape will mean lose or gain weight
in my case - i need to lose a few pound and get toned. im a vegan too and it's been all carbs this winter. i finally went out to the farmers market and picked up some fruit and veggies... finally!!
elise - i have windsor pilates too! too bad i lost the third tape i think its at my mom's house or something. Ya know - in addition to those tapes they say you should do like 3 days of cardio... hehe - that's quite time consuming. I can't wait till I get my new bike - I'll definately be working out.
ok my measurements (and everyone who wants to pparticipate needs to do it too - we'll compare in a month):
neck: 11.5 inches chest: 34 inches waist: 25.5 inches hips: 36 inches thigh: 20.5 inches
weight: 115lbs
Mmmmmmkay everyone else's turn!!

eh - the ab slide hurts my shoulders... personally. its just not really all that good.
for abs - you are only suppose to do a set of 20 ... anymore and it's useless. so like do 20 crunches, 20 sit ups, 20 side crunches... back to 20 crunches, 20 sit ups, 20 side crunches... ya know? i read it at a few places and also my boyfriend is a personal trainer and agrees to it.

Increase your daily caloric intake in primarily the carbohydrate area and secondly in the protein area if you wish to put on size. Del, I don't agree on the 20 rep abdominal scheme actually.

Man, if my only problem were to GAIN weight.
I've had a workout plan that I can do in my dorm room in less than an hour. It covers cardio and lots of muscle toning. As I grow fitter, I can add reps and minutes and such. I really like it.
I would go to the gym here, because it's free with my tuition, but there are sooooo many super-skinny people on this campus! I went to the gym several times last semester, but always felt self-conscious around all the skinny people working out there. It's stupid, I know, but I feel like I can't show my face back in that gym unless I lose ten pounds.
I'm 5'7" and approx. 165 lbs. I've been 160 lbs for a while, but I try not to jinx things. At my height, I should be around 135 lbs, I think.
Anyway, I have time to do this workout. I like doing this workout. My problem is getting around to actually doing it. I'm a huge procrastinator and tend to put things off until it's too late. Reading this thread makes me want to put on the techno and start hopping though, so I say keep it up!
Good idea for a thread. I think this will help a lot of people.

You should try running then, doing stand alone excersizes wont shed the pounds like running will . Not only that, it will help get your system to filter out more toxins. Rennen ist gut fur dich.

I have been a bodybuilder for a few years now and have a pretty good knowledge base to work with in terms of dieting (both for weight gain and loss). I don't want to overdo myself because anyone who has a passion for this type of thing tends to go mental and start telling you too much. I will say a couple of things. First of all, too much protein. Not going to happen for you people, not unless you really overdo it, it takes some serious work to overdo it. Secondly, cardinal rule (not often talked about either) in terms of weight MANAGEMENT or LOSS is this. - Always eat protein with a meal and never combine significant carbs and fat with a meal. Now I know most of you don't want to go overboard so I will guarantee that if you atleast follow that rule you will not get any heavier. If you want to supercharge your metabolism try to eat more than 3 times a day (6 is optimum), smaller amounts. You've all heard it, you all probably think its really hard, its not. Your metabolism adapts extremely quickly and you will not run on fluctuating energy levels due to heavy ingestion of carbs so much. Thirdly, never listen to anybody who comes up with ideas that protein powders or this or that is bad (or good). Ask for decent research sources. If you want the sources of what I am saying I will gladly give them. I will tell you this now, aside from protein and creatine there are very few supplements on the market that really work (steroids not included). Finally, I see some people talking about self confidence. I will tell you what I have learnt over the years. Its hard to put it into a cohesive paragraph so I will just do it point wise. - Embarassed in the gym because you're out of shape? stop talking crap! anyone who makes fun of you is jackass and deserves superbad karma. Every time a person laughs at you in the gym they take a chunk of your confidence. You can't stop them doing that but you can turn that frown upside down. Naysayers must make you more determined to succeed, if you don't play the game like that you will never get anywhere. - Its all about regular goals, don't weigh yourself every day, every week is fine. Always at the same time of the day, full bladder, full stomach and clothes always add to the weight. - When you think about what you want to achieve, don't think about the work it will take like it is amazing. Seriously, every time you get that lower weight (or higher, depends on goal) you will feel good. It is extremely satisfying. You need not think that losing weight means you will only be happy when you get to your ideal weight. As long as you are moving forward you will feel great. - Don't want to go to the gym? work out at home!, facillitate the situation so its not that inconvenient to do it. The less inconvenient it is the easier it is to not face the pangs of "i dont want to go to the gym". I'm going to end this post on a negative point, really I need to say this because I feel like you guys can hear the truth. Most people who do this fail. They quit really quick, they either quit because their halfass attempt didn't work, because working out is hard, because of self confidence etc etc. Basically they quit because they didn't want it enough. There wasn't enough motivation for one reason or another. Its not that it is hard, it is quite normal after a few days of doing what you have to do but people don't realise that. Anybody who whinges publically about going to the gym or having eat this or that will fail. Its ok to feel some discomfort having to do it, just don't acknowledge it. Its a means to an end. The great thing is working out (particular lifting weight) is a fabulous antidepressant. So many people do not know this. Look at this, I've written a mass of information. I'm sorry I really couldn't help it. Let me finish on a positive point, food for thought. I have never met anybody who works out regularly and eats properly who does not have their shit together. It just doesn't happen.

Del, I don't agree on the 20 rep abdominal scheme actually.
I would mildly disagree here. If you want to put on weight you must learn to count calories. There is no priority nutrient here - they are all important. Don't neglect fat or you will find you go nowhere..
Let me dispell some myths about abwork. You can only see your abdominal muscles at below 10% bodyfat for males. Not sure for female. You do not burn a lot of fat doing abdominal exercises. Don't waste your time doing ab work if you are not going to lose the fat, you will never see them! Seriously, abwork is truly very low in terms of priority. DIET is the most important thing. You will go nowhere without eating smart.

Oh god I had to say something here.
You will not loose much fat doing pilates. It is a waste of time. Run, lift weight but for gods sake don't waste your time with any "chic" flavor of the month exercise programs like pilates. If you are not panting like a dog and sweating like a mule.. you're wasting your time. Exercise properly and you will feel good afterwards and sleep much better.

-Atreau
Could you post your program? I am skeptical. I will say this though, if you have room in your dorm room skipping is a very good exercise if you insist on staying home. I was mostly talking to you about self confidence before. Trust me, the skinny guys want to get big and the overweight guys want to get small. Almost nobody is happy and generally most people are feeling a little bit self conscious there. Stop thinking people are looking and laughing. You lose a couple of pounds in a week for a few weeks and people will notice. Don't sell yourself short by doing a workout that is less effective in your dorm. Go to your gym and give it your all. 30 pounds is not that overweight. You are not obese.

Ok those of you giving measurements, the things that are most interesting are height, weight and bodyfat percentage. BF is not exactly easy to pull out of a hat though, if you are serious about monitoring it heavily then you need calipers to measure some sites on your body (by grabbing the skin and measuring thickness). Anyway, I digress because most of you do not want to do that. Basically you only need to talk about your weight and height. The thing about measuring waist and whatnot is that it not superbly relevent. Do not be fooled by the fact that a bodypart has not lost size even if you have lost weight. The way your body burns the fat away is quite strange is mostly a sequence of bodyparts. I can't be bothered to find the sequence for you now but if you want it again I will give it to you. As I say, height and weight. Oh and gender if its not obvious in your name.

Get a measuring tape and go to Crosstrainer to know how exactly to measure yourself.

uhm okay i have to disagree with a few points here...
im 5'4 and 115... i do outside cardio (hiking, rock scrambling, skating, walking) and when I did have a gym - i ran until i sprained my Achillies tendon and had to go to the ER to make sure i didn't rip it completely (i couldn't walk for over a week). now im really scared to run.
pilates is great - i have a very weak back. i've been through so much with my back - at the age of 19 i've done everything BUT surgery. You name it - i did it - epidural shots, physical therapy, even this weird machine thingy...
pilates is one of the few toning plans that make my back feel BETTER. the stretching of the back and muscles really help me relax and feel in control of my body.
it's hard to weight train when u dont have money for a gym membership or weights. i have a membership to Lucille Roberts - but that gym SUCKS - it's horrible except for like a few classes (kickboxing, etc).

I agree with you on the pilates...it is not so straining on your body, where as weight lifting will add 100x more pressure and pain to your bad areas. I have lower back problems from a previous accident and I am still recovering from a pinched nerve almost becoming a chronic pain. The pilates by far has been what works best for me in my situation.
Kickboxing is awesome. I used to take cardio-kick boxing. Now thats what I would call a workout!!!!

No i mean that I assume I was talking to a female and many women think they will get overly muscular if they lift weight. Sorry, my bad I knew that was a poor way to express myself.

You never disagreed with one point. I said Pilates does not compare to running, lifting weight (for fat burning) etc. If you have a medical reason why you cannot do this or that then don't do it, god no.
Stationary bikes with resistence would be good for you, they are very good at pyramiding and if you apply yourself you can really do some good high intensity cardio on them.
My dislike for things like Pilates is that like the informercial gadgets that promise to make you look excellent you are being sold bunk products. People actually think they will lose weight doing pilates. Feel good, enjoy pilates but if you want to lose weight, don't waste your time with ineffective workouts - they will only ultimately help you to fail and give up because you think that you can't do it (bs btw, everybody can lose weight).

If you lift weights with proper form there will be little pressure on any sensitive areas of your body. The lower back is one of the most raped bodyparts when people lift with incorrect form. Things like, if you are doing a dumbell curl and it is a bit of weight for you you will naturally try to lean back and drive the weight up (putting incredible pressure on lower back). To avoid this, one should slightly (just slightly) bend the knees. Thats what form and training smart is about.

i know that certain excercises will make my legs too muscular. i hate it and so i stay away from any of that - i've been dancing since i was 3 and that gave me really strong muscular legs - but i'd rather have chicken legs. lol.

Here's the program I found: -Start with 25 reps each exercise and do the whole list twice, alternating sides- 1. Crunches with ankles crossed, bottom heel resting on a chair 2. Side leg lifts with shoulder raises 3. Running in place with high knees or jumping rope for 1 minute 4. Chair tricept dips with one leg extended 5. Squats with bicep curls 6. Running in place with high knees or jumping rope for 1 minute 7. Seated shoulder presses 8. Slow side kicks 9. Running in place with high knees or jumping rope for 1 minute 10. Slow bicycle crunches (switch sides and repeat)
I enjoy this program because it's very flexible. As I improve my stamina (I have NONE right now, so that one minute of running in place really gets my heart racing) I can increase how long I run in place. I can also increase how many reps I do of each exercise.
I know this program isn't very intense at all, but for someone who hasn't been to a gym regularly in over a year, it's hard enough for me now. When this program stops helping me, I'll consider running (outside this time ) or maybe even head over to the gym.
I know I'm not fat or obese. I do know that I'm terribly out of shape. And I know that, when I go to the gym, people aren't really laughing and pointing. It's a psychological thing I've had since middle school. Even if I attempt to ignore it, it still comes back and bothers me.
This program that I can do in the privacy of my room is helping to improve my self-confidence and self-esteem. Going to the gym, on the other hand, would only help highten my feelings of self-consciousness and self-depreciation, and the point is to avoid that. This program is not only helping me physically, but emotionally and mentally as well.

I did not nor do I ever neglect fat. I just didn't mention it in that one particular case. The kat wanted to put on size, the best way to do that is to increase your CALORIC intake (like I said) in PRIMARILY the carb area and SECONDLY in the protein area. If we want to get into every single aspect of nutrition here, we would need thousands of bulletin boards.
I've trained high school and college athletes, elderly people, middle-aged people and everyday youths. I was able to plan and execute successful eating and training routines for them time and time again. All had their own individual goals: lose fat, lose mass, increase energy, increase endurance, increase range of motion, increase flexibility, decrease pain in joint movements, gain mass, gain lean muscle, get stronger and bigger, get stronger without getting bigger...you name it, I've trained it.
Del, I know I am confusing

I think you misunderstand me, I am talking about the malconutrient: Fat, the one that has approximately 9 calories to each gram. The one that if neglected leaves a very large hole in your caloric intake. I would not need thousands of message boards, most of the best nutritional information I have read has come from t-mag.com.

Women cannot get beefed up unless they eat enough food to get beefed up. Nobody is going to put on significant weight if they are eating the precise amount they need to either loose weight or maintain. That defeats the purpose of the concept maintenance. Since you are on a diet to loose weight there is little chance of you putting on much weight. Take a look at fitness girls and light category womens bodybuilding show pictures. Some of these women are as strong as any man (and more) here yet they are not huge.
As for avoid growth, try to stay away from the 8-12 rep range if you want to avoid muscle growth since that is generally the accepted range for muscle growth (lower, moving towards strength, higher, moving towards endurance).
Deadlifts can be done at home if you have what you had at the gym, aka a bar and weight. Look in your local second hand paper, there will be a host of people selling gear there quite cheaply.
Look at it this way, you body is going to be firmer no matter what, if you don't like the increase in size, it is much easier to lose muscle then it is to put it on so you will have no trouble getting rid of it.
