uhm okay i have to disagree with a few points here...

im 5'4 and 115... i do outside cardio (hiking, rock scrambling, skating, walking) and when I did have a gym - i ran until i sprained my Achillies tendon and had to go to the ER to make sure i didn't rip it completely (i couldn't walk for over a week). now im really scared to run.

pilates is great - i have a very weak back. i've been through so much with my back - at the age of 19 i've done everything BUT surgery. You name it - i did it - epidural shots, physical therapy, even this weird machine thingy...

pilates is one of the few toning plans that make my back feel BETTER. the stretching of the back and muscles really help me relax and feel in control of my body.

it's hard to weight train when u dont have money for a gym membership or weights. i have a membership to Lucille Roberts - but that gym SUCKS - it's horrible except for like a few classes (kickboxing, etc).

I agree with you on the pilates...it is not so straining on your body, where as weight lifting will add 100x more pressure and pain to your bad areas. I have lower back problems from a previous accident and I am still recovering from a pinched nerve almost becoming a chronic pain. The pilates by far has been what works best for me in my situation.

Kickboxing is awesome. I used to take cardio-kick boxing. Now thats what I would call a workout!!!!

No i mean that I assume I was talking to a female and many women think they will get overly muscular if they lift weight. Sorry, my bad I knew that was a poor way to express myself.

You never disagreed with one point. I said Pilates does not compare to running, lifting weight (for fat burning) etc. If you have a medical reason why you cannot do this or that then don't do it, god no.

Stationary bikes with resistence would be good for you, they are very good at pyramiding and if you apply yourself you can really do some good high intensity cardio on them.

My dislike for things like Pilates is that like the informercial gadgets that promise to make you look excellent you are being sold bunk products. People actually think they will lose weight doing pilates. Feel good, enjoy pilates but if you want to lose weight, don't waste your time with ineffective workouts - they will only ultimately help you to fail and give up because you think that you can't do it (bs btw, everybody can lose weight).

If you lift weights with proper form there will be little pressure on any sensitive areas of your body. The lower back is one of the most raped bodyparts when people lift with incorrect form. Things like, if you are doing a dumbell curl and it is a bit of weight for you you will naturally try to lean back and drive the weight up (putting incredible pressure on lower back). To avoid this, one should slightly (just slightly) bend the knees. Thats what form and training smart is about.

eh - my boyfriend is a personal trainer (you'd think i'd have the body of a supermodel by now but im stubborn and don't take his advice) and he did have me doing dead lifts which actually made my back feel better - but how do you do these things when you dont have a gym?!

as for pilates - they tell you that it won't work unless u add in cardio and a new diet.

and women CAN get beefed up - it's all about body structure. i know that if i do those stair machines - my ass is gonna grow another million inches bigger. that's something i can't stop.

i know that certain excercises will make my legs too muscular. i hate it and so i stay away from any of that - i've been dancing since i was 3 and that gave me really strong muscular legs - but i'd rather have chicken legs. lol.

Could you post your program? I am skeptical.  I will say this though, if you have room in your dorm room skipping is a very good exercise if you insist on staying home.

I was mostly talking to you about self confidence before.  Trust me, the skinny guys want to get big and the overweight guys want to get small.  Almost nobody is happy and generally most people are feeling a little bit self conscious there.  Stop thinking people are looking and laughing.  You lose a couple of pounds in a week for a few weeks and people will notice.  Don't sell yourself short by doing a workout that is less effective in your dorm.  Go to your gym and give it your all.  30 pounds is not that overweight. You are not obese.

Here's the program I found:
-Start with 25 reps each exercise and do the whole list twice, alternating sides-
1. Crunches with ankles crossed, bottom heel resting on a chair
2. Side leg lifts with shoulder raises
3. Running in place with high knees or jumping rope for 1 minute
4. Chair tricept dips with one leg extended
5. Squats with bicep curls
6. Running in place with high knees or jumping rope for 1 minute
7. Seated shoulder presses
8. Slow side kicks
9. Running in place with high knees or jumping rope for 1 minute
10. Slow bicycle crunches
(switch sides and repeat)

I enjoy this program because it's very flexible.  As I improve my stamina (I have NONE right now, so that one minute of running in place really gets my heart racing) I can increase how long I run in place.  I can also increase how many reps I do of each exercise.

I know this program isn't very intense at all, but for someone who hasn't been to a gym regularly in over a year, it's hard enough for me now.  When this program stops helping me, I'll consider running (outside this time ) or maybe even head over to the gym.

I know I'm not fat or obese.  I do know that I'm terribly out of shape.  And I know that, when I go to the gym, people aren't really laughing and pointing.  It's a psychological thing I've had since middle school.  Even if I attempt to ignore it, it still comes back and bothers me.

This program that I can do in the privacy of my room is helping to improve my self-confidence and self-esteem.  Going to the gym, on the other hand, would only help highten my feelings of self-consciousness and self-depreciation, and the point is to avoid that.  This program is not only helping me physically, but emotionally and mentally as well.

-Atreau

I did not nor do I ever neglect fat.  I just didn't mention it in that one particular case.  The kat wanted to put on size, the best way to do that is to increase your CALORIC intake (like I said) in PRIMARILY the carb area and SECONDLY in the protein area.  If we want to get into every single aspect of nutrition here, we would need thousands of bulletin boards.

I've trained high school and college athletes, elderly people, middle-aged people and everyday youths.  I was able to plan and execute successful eating and training routines for them time and time again.  All had their own individual goals:  lose fat, lose mass, increase energy, increase endurance,  increase range of motion, increase flexibility, decrease pain in joint movements, gain mass, gain lean muscle, get stronger and bigger, get stronger without getting bigger...you name it, I've trained it.

Del, I know I am confusing

I think you misunderstand me, I am talking about the malconutrient: Fat, the one that has approximately 9 calories to each gram.  The one that if neglected leaves a very large hole in your caloric intake.  I would not need thousands of message boards, most of the best nutritional information I have read has come from t-mag.com.

Women cannot get beefed up unless they eat enough food to get beefed up. Nobody is going to put on significant weight if they are eating the precise amount they need to either loose weight or maintain. That defeats the purpose of the concept maintenance. Since you are on a diet to loose weight there is little chance of you putting on much weight. Take a look at fitness girls and light category womens bodybuilding show pictures. Some of these women are as strong as any man (and more) here yet they are not huge.

As for avoid growth, try to stay away from the 8-12 rep range if you want to avoid muscle growth since that is generally the accepted range for muscle growth (lower, moving towards strength, higher, moving towards endurance).

Deadlifts can be done at home if you have what you had at the gym, aka a bar and weight. Look in your local second hand paper, there will be a host of people selling gear there quite cheaply.

Look at it this way, you body is going to be firmer no matter what, if you don't like the increase in size, it is much easier to lose muscle then it is to put it on so you will have no trouble getting rid of it.
