Re: Polyfil ironed out to create 'SFDs' [Re: Sits]
    #20330590 -

I just inoculated 6 jars WBS with 3 types of lids. My experience was as follows:

Jars 1-3: Combined this tek with SpitballJedi's Lid Tek. (Opened jar to inoculate)
-The SFD stayed nice and neat in the lid, didn't seem disturbed by normal shaking.

Jar 4: Used this tek with a rigid SFD under the plastic lid. (Opened jar to inoculate)
-The jar was quite hard to open with one hand and the SFD stayed on the jar when I lifted the lid (pretty much ruining my sterile procedure)

Jars 5-6: Used TL's lid tek with SHIPs
-Easy as usual, though not as sterile because of the needle being pushed through silicone.

Now to see if they contaminate!

How is that not sterile? You PCed the jar, flamed the needle, and wiped the SHIP with iso correct?

Yessir, I just mean that technically a SHIP isn't sterile technique. If I'm not mistaken, wiping something with ISO is sanitization but not sterilization. I dunno, I could be way off here.

Using a SHIP the right way is just as good as any other method.....even if it was wiped with alcohol....

I agree and I definitely prefer a SHIP. I just did this small trial because I messed up and didn't prep lids with silicone in time.

Are you still happy with the Mainstays brand lids?

Yes very, they drill fairly easily and they're sturdy.  They last a long time and they create a great seal.  They become very loose when I remove them from the PC but from what I've heard most any plastic lids do that. :shrug:

From what I've read, the loose lids don't seem to be a problem. I wasn't sure about the brand though, but they are a lot cheaper than the Ball brand. I will pick some up tonight. Thx. You're a good member of this community.

I almost got plastic lids on my last lid purchase.  Do you prefer them over metal lids?  I imagine they are easier to deal with.  All they had were the mainstays (wally world was out of everything canning related almost) and decided against them.

I like that they are 1 solid piece so when I'm going G2G it makes things that much easier.  They can be PC'd over and over again and you don't have to worry about rust.  I don't know how people can have rusty lids and have sound piece of mind..

thanks man you're great to have around here as well!  I have a break through that I'm in the process of testing and I'll tag you when I come out with the new tek!

quick question

when autoclaving I always put aluminum foil over my jars as you can see in the pics. I always end up with wet filters though. any ideas on how to prevent that shit from happening? I mean they're not soaked or anything but still wet...

maybe tighten the foil a bit mor under the lid but that shouldn't be happening. Though they say you don't need to use foil with sfds, I think the foil does help as i had jars that had a mushy starchy burst grain bottom because water was getting through the sfd from dripping off the pc lid and the jars stacked on top. Maybe if you can after sterilization, remove the foil and shake em while they are still hot and the water should evaporate quickly.

What did you use to glue down the filters?  Make sure it has a WORKING temp of like 400 or so.  Thats why RTV is used, it is designed to be used in engines, and has a working temp of like 450c, well above the temp of a pc.  Working temp means the temp at which it will not deform or melt under that temp.

:whathesaid:  I have the same issue, but I just take em out when they are still hot and they dry in seconds.  The nice thing about polyester filling is it is hydrophobic (and oleophilic) making id dry really fast.  This is tru of any PET polyester, and one of the reasons I like it over cellulose SFD's.

ive read several times any 100% silicone will work fine because pc temps don't get nearly that high. I used red rtv on all my lids too:shrug:

And I can second that its true.
Clear bathroom silicone works just as fine as any colored rtv silicone.

I'm quite sure RR says the rtv stuff comes off faster too, and therefore standard silicone is even better.
Yes, look here:

Just make sure you use the red automotive RTV because it is rated for higher temps.  A PC gets up there in temp and I have had other RTVs fail.

Not correct.  This is the biggest mistake guys make when they use silicone. RTV silicone is designed for much hotter temps than found in a pressure cooker and it doesn't cure properly, usually peeling off later.

Simply use regular silicone, not the high temp RTV.

I used tec7 clear bathroom silicone. it held up very well. it did dry very quickly. the only thing that worries me is this. when the jars cool down, they suck in air. that air had to go through the polyfill disk but when it's wet it's a vector for contams...
