Overwhelmed and afraid of UTFSE (PF related)
    #17855434 -

Hi everybody,

I'm not new to this but for all purposes I might as well be.

About five or six years ago I got pretty active on this forum (forget the username) for a few months while I was using the PF Tek.  I rented a house from a great man who respected my privacy and I had nothing to worry about.

Several years (and moves) later I'm trying again and didn't really forget a thing.

The only problem is that I've looked over these forums several times in those years and it seems a LOT has changed.  I'm currently waiting to see how five pint jars (I know but it's all I had to start) do after inoc.

I remember that the dry verm was supposed to be the filter.  I can still find the same pages and videos I watched that state the dry verm is a barrier and it should be good.  But I see pictures that people post with (what I'm assuming is) silicone and even polyfiber covering ONE injection port, that confuses me.  What happened to four?  One definitely seems easier and if it's big enough (which most appear to be) there would be room to reinsert at a different angle enough times to pretty much equal four points or even more.

Before posting this I searched to see if there was an updated PF tek.  The one I found was a pictorial that showed somebody inoculating through tin foil at four points.

My question is - What's the best rendition of the PF tek to start with?

Also what's the best setup for the lids?

I will say that I know there are other ways to grow besides PF and there's a definite chance that the "one holed" lids I saw were rye or WBS or something else.  I promise that I've used the search engine and, although it was hard sorting through all of the posts older than when I first ventured into this years ago, I think I've done a good amount of looking for this information...I just can't seem to find a specific answer.

One of the biggest problems I encountered that caused such a gap between grows was vermiculite....I live in NH which isn't far from anything really and the only time I seem to be able to find verm is towards the second half of the summer.  The past two years the type I found was too fine to use and just clumped up.  But I've found one that I think will work so I tried again.

I really fear the UTFSE response more than anything (lame, I know) but I have and just can't seem to gather the info I'm looking for.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Plug.

First part, yes. Second part, no.

You want 4 holes in your PF lids. Now you could use his general idea and do 4 injection ports around the edge then one SFD hole in the center. You could even skip your dry verm layer that way, and you could still use those lids if you ever decide to do whole grains.

It's easier to just use verm for a filter, but if you wanna play around, any standard lid TEK will work if you modify it to have 4 injection ports.

Why no on the lid tek?  You can very easily drill 4 holes in the lid and cover all 4 holes with RTV silicone (Which is what I do and use) and it works great. TL even says not only can you skip the dry verm layer when you use these lids but you can also forgo the foil on top.

I just skimmed it, but I didn't see anything saying anything about modifications for PF cakes. Like I said, the general design would work, but you need 4 inoculation points.

I seriously appreciate your responses!

I hear both of you.

With the second part of Wonka's suggestion - I do have filter discs and it seems like they would get saturated during the PC.

I have no idea what goes on inside my PC while in action but it seems like steam rises, steam = water, so wouldn't the discs get saturated if not covered by foil?

Also, and this has probably been answered with previous posts but since we're on the topic, is silicon porous?  Does it allow for GE?

One will work it will just colonize slower.

But sometimes it'll just stall out with one hole. I've had it happen. It also takes a LOT longer if they do colonize.

I cover mine with foil.

If it were porous, it wouldn't make a very good sealant, now would it? Much less a self-healing injection port.

The synthetic filter disk allows for gas exchange.  When I use a lid with one port I just inject a total of 1cc into it.  I haven't had a jar stall out yet.  I'm just saying TL is a trusted cultivator and a member of the AMU and I haven't gone wrong yet by following advice from the AMU.

I see what you're saying - The disc would allow for GE while the ports are injection only right? Yep

I'm an aquarium nut and have several uses for silicone (albeit a different type or grade or whatever) and it just didn't add up...in the moment....but that makes sense.

Yup that is exactly it...you got it:kenthumbup:

Just make sure you use the red automotive RTV because it is rated for higher temps.  A PC gets up there in temp and I have had other RTVs fail.

I never said it would stall because of gas exchange. I just said it might stall.

The reason being because it takes too damn long to colonize from one spot, in which time your cake dries out... and stalls. Sometimes you'll get away with it, sometimes you won't. Personally, I don't wanna waste time on things that don't work every time.

Not correct.  This is the biggest mistake guys make when they use silicone. RTV silicone is designed for much hotter temps than found in a pressure cooker and it doesn't cure properly, usually peeling off later.

Simply use regular silicone, not the high temp RTV. Clear silicone is good for up to 300F, which is well below a pressure cooker temp. You could also put micropore tape over the inoculation holes and simply cover the wound with another piece of micropore tape after injecting.

Thank you for clarifying that. I obviously was misinformed.

Regular silicone is also clear, which is a plus.
