any ideas why it still smells fine even though it looks retarded? by the way i found another post with nearly identical information, except the sub looks more like the sub of my tray with the addition of the yellowing from my monotub...
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19802834/fpart/3/vc/1#19802834

Look here under "formation of stroma"

I'm assuming however you smell tested the patches themselves and not just the substrate in general. Some molds can look similar to that as well.

its kinda hard to smell the specific patches themselves, but i did the best i could, and it still just smells like mush and coir. the surface of the sub does show some similarities to the pics of stroma, but it still doesn't look exactly like what i have. and throughout the course of the day little clusters of pins are shooting up throughout the tub, probably 40 total and counting. i'm glad i decided to ride this out.

in terms of causes, i have no idea why this would be the case, but the only thing on the list for possible causes of stroma formation (other than bad spawn) that seems possible is excessive CO2. do you think my bottom holes are stuffed too tightly with polyfil?

well whatever is happening in my little microcosm hell pit, it seems to be on track now. of course i do have totoro watching over the tubs, so maybe he scared away the evil contams. i'll post pics whenever i feel like there have been any visible noteworthy changes/progress in the tub.

thanks a ton for everyone who helped me out with this project. if nothing else you guys all deserve 10 shrooms for enduring my daily questions.

i'm sure everyone's tired of this thread lingering on with my tangent, but i just figured i'd let everyone know how the first flush turned out so anyone who reads about the problems i faced with my tub in the future knows what to possibly expect.

after putting the tub outside and otherwise treating it as normal i was able to harvest 57.5 wet ounces, so i'm expecting the harvest to dry out to around 5.5oz dry. also consider the fact that i was a little overly cautious when the consensus was that i had linear bacteria so i removed about 20% of the surface with a sanitized spoon. that section only produced about 1/10th as many pins/fruits as the untouched surface, so i think it's safe to say i would have raked in between 6.5 and 7oz dry if i had left it alone.

after soaking the sub for 10 hours (it feels very water-saturated, maybe even more so than when the first flush started) last night, which was about half a day after i finished harvesting the first flush, the first few pins have started coming in this morning.

surprisingly to me, the area with the most fresh pins is the section that i spoon fucked, so it appears that the mycelium is rebounding quite well overall.

here is a pic of my harvest in my ghetto desiccant chamber:

and here is a pic of my sub 1 day after harvesting the first flush and rehydrating:

thank you so much for all the advice and opinions that helped lead to my first successful monotub grow! please let me know if i forgot to rate you up if you offered advice and i'll gladly do so! :awesomenod:

p.s. i don't really know how normal this is, but i realized about halfway through the grow that i had spawned both golden teacher and penis envy varieties into the tub (5qt GT and 3qt PE), but there was no sign of penis envy in the yield whatsoever. i'm honestly not surprised because PE tends to take longer from my experience, and the GT was spawned at a ratio of almost double the PE, but what do you guys think i can expect overall from this tub?
1) GT was spawned at a higher ratio so a simple game of numbers caused GT to be the dominant variety produced
2) GT worked faster so i may see some PE this coming flush now that it has had time to prepare/consolidate/whatever
3) PE is "recessive" compared to the more aggressive variety GT, so GT overran PE and claimed the tub

i really don't know much about how different varieties of cubes interact with one another so i'd like to learn about pros and cons of me unintentionally spawning 2 different varieties together. if it doesn't reduce yields at all i'd really like to spawn an equal ratio of 2 varieties into 1 tub so i can more accurately gauge there interaction with one another on a level playing field.

You should put a lid on that desiccant chamber, that way it's not just pulling moisture out of the air, and will work much faster.

I wonder if the two strain thing isn't why it looked so FUBAR to begin with.

yea i have a lid on it now, i just used the pic i took right after harvest yesterday because the booms looked prettier and you could see more without the lid. i had the lid off so the shitty ac unit in the background to the right of the chamber could air dry them a bit before the cat litter silica gel went to town on them.

and yea i mentioned that the strain combo could have possibly been a cause for my tub to look like the substrate version of the humpback of notre dame, but no one really latched onto the idea so i didn't bring it up again.

although my yield was reduced a bit because of my [probably not even beneficial] precautions taken toward ridding the potential contams, i'm still very content with nearly 6oz dry from my first monotub flush.

considering i started my first wbs jars at least a week after my current batch of brf pf tek jars, and the first pins on those jars just came in 2 days ago (the same day i harvested the monotub), i don't ever plan to go back to pf tek unless i want to attempt something experimental on a small scale. although getting moisture content right with wbs can be a bitch and a half, the entire process was far more rewarding and speedier in the end. i'm currently working with rye grass seed, which is great for the bajillions of inoculation points, but i'm looking forward to grabbing some rye berries simply because of their insanely easy and forgiving prep method. plus the strainers i have and can easily acquire are much more suited to larger grains. i'll gladly sacrifice inoculation points for ease and minimal risk factors.

I'll just throw it in there as no one has done it yet and you dont wanna lose your harvest:
you need to fan dry your shrooms more before they go in the damprid chamber.
the silica/damprid can't absorb all that water it's just a way to keep things dry or get that last 5-10% out.

MW420, once u get like 3-4 tubs going at one time, def get a dehydrator.  i waited way too long, and there were times when every table top, counter top, and chair were covered in air drying shrooms.  they are really cheap, and sometimes u can find one at a thrift store.  but just get the cheapest model on amazon, mine does not even have a temp regulator, just on or off. it was $20 plus shipping.  if ur clever u can get an ounce on each tray

a dehydrater is too small for 3 or 4 tubs harvest
box fans work real well for bulk drying

i leave them to sit about 20 hours after harvest before putting into dehydrator so they are a bit smaller and can fit more in, but yea the bigger 66qt tubs yield too much for one dehydrator run, but u make up for it by speed

Great plan.  It saddens me how often I hear this from people who've made the jump, and then how seldom I'm able to convince newbs to go straight to bulk with their colonized cakes.

so the easiest way to dry real bulk is maybe box fan and then dehumidifier once they're down to about 10% water?
and BL: i read in several places that drying methods that use excessive heat cause degradation of the psilocybin, so would the dehumidifiers that you're talking about either not use heat or use a minimal amount?

it just seems like there has to be some way that someone has come up with to make this a really efficient process, considering most people that stick with this for a long time eventually get into extremely large harvests on a regular basis

the bulk seems more intimidating because the pf tek, if done properly, has so much consistency with low contam risks and reliable yields, but i think the main reason people don't try grain jars or bulk as willingly is bc the necessity of a pressure cooker makes the whole process seem more technical, when really it's just stepping up your game. definitely glad i was curious enough to throw down some money for a pc tho, and i'm SO FUCKING GLAD i finally upgraded to a 16qt presto

Cabinet dryer/commercial dehydrator(there are other terms for them). The design is like a refrigerator with many racks in it. You can buy one, which is very expensive, or you can make one.
