Latin Pronunciation Thread
    #18543536 -

I have a problem. I think working on it can help more than just myself.

I learn and retain information differently than the majority of people, I always have.
Its difficult to describe and I won't go into detail but me learning something requires 2 things.
1) a good level of interest.
2) direct examples.

When detailed instructions or explanations are displayed before me, I often have trouble comprehending the proper procedure.
Eventually leading to a decrease in interest and ultimately abandoning the endeavor.
But as soon as I am given a direct example it all makes perfect sense, information is retained.

To sum things up a bit, I just need some proper pronunciation examples for Latin words.
I'll compile a list on this post as more come in so people can study it. My hope is by studying the examples I'll be able to eventually grasp all
Latin pronunciations.

I will post words, you post the pronunciation, or post your own words and pronunciations.

Example: Pluteus (plew-tay-us)
I don't know if this example is proper I've also heard it pronounced (plew-tee-iss).
I think I heard Alan R. pronounce it as described in the example in a microscopy video.

So to get things started we can work on these-

Xeromphalina ()

Psilocybin ()

Amanita ()

Leucocoprinus ()

Cortinarius ()

Agaricus ()

Gymnopilus ()

Basidia ()

Quercus ()

Laccaria ()

Baeocystin ()

Hexagonia ()

Lamallae ()

Pileus ()

Pleurocystidia ()

Cheilocystidia ()

Ganoderma ()

If I misspell something please correct it.

I pronounce psilocybe as (sil-uh-sybe)
And panaeolus as (pan-ay-all-us)

Thanks for the help so far. I'll wait for more and then update the Op.

I took four years of Latin in school and if you go by classical and not ecclesiastical or vulgar Latin pronunciation y'all are all wrong. Learn the pronunciation rules and just go with it. For example: pluteus (ploo tay oos) psilocybe (sih low kih beh) et cetera.

Ok from this post, I'm interpreting that you are suggesting that the letter "c" has a "k" sound, and not an "s" sound. Very interesting.

I think there are grammatical rules in latin that define wether the letter C is articulated as a frickative or a sibilant. To the best of my knowledge "cybe" is pronounced as "seh beh" when it follows an O. However, my experience with Latin is entirely contextual.

I think Kuo addresses the issue of the many "proper" ways to pronounce latin. I don't think I've heard any biology teacher ever use classical latin pronunciations for scientific latin (binomial nomenclature is hard enough for most folks).

The recordings of Alexander Smith have been very helpful to me. Most of the time a best guess at proper pronunciation will sound close enough for fellow mushroom enthusiasts to understand.

Edit: In the link to Alexander Smith there is also recordings of Rolf Singer (a British Mycologist). I think his pronunciation is more along the lines of classical latin pronunciation.

If you want an example of the wrong way to misrenounce all of those, I could post how I do it... but that's probably what we're trying to correct.

So I'll just sit and listen.

Great idea for a thread Tmethyl!  I pronounce it SIL-uh-sybe, and I pronounce the chemical sil-uh-SYbin (as in, SIGH-bin).

Or maybe SIL-oh-sybe/sil-oh-SYbin.  I like the "sybe" ending because it sounds like cyber or cybernetic, which seems more fitting for a psychedelic mushroom than "SILLo-sib-in" or "sil-AH-sib-in".  To me, the latter sounds more like slaw in a bin :lol:

:popcorn:

P.S. I also learn the same way as you: with a live demo or very clear pictures demonstrating each step instead of describing them in text.  Once I see it, I understand very quickly, especially if I also perform the steps myself.

Totally true if we're talking ecclesiastical Latin, but if we're using classical the "c" always is fricative.

This is a really tricky topic. My professors usually pronounced species by sort of Americanizing an italian/spanish style of pronunciation. No one uses classical latin pronunciation anymore, not even the vatican.

One thing I know for sure is that every syllable is pronounced.

Here's my english versions for your examples:

Key:
a = ay of "bay"
ah = a of "car"
aa = a of "bat" - doesn't exist in latin, I think
e = e of "bet"
ee = ee of "bee"
y = y of "by"
i = i of "bit"
o = o of "go"
oo = oo of "too"
uh = u of "but"
g = g of "go"
j = j of "jug"

Xeromphalina (ze-rom-fah-lee-nah)

Psilocybin (si-lo-sy-bin)

Amanita (ah-muh-nee-tuh)

Leucocoprinus (loo-ko-cah-pree-nuhs) eu = long u

Cortinarius (cor-ti-nah-ree-uhs)

Agaricus (uh-gah-ri-kuhs)

Gymnopilus (jim-nuh-pi-luhs) - as in gymnospore

Basidia (bah-si-dee-uh)

Quercus (kwer-kuhs)

Laccaria (luh-kah-ree-uh)

Baeocystin (bee-o-si-stin) ae = long e

Hexagonia (heks-a-gah-nee-uh)

Lamallae (lah-muh-lee)

Pileus (py-lee-uhs)

Pleurocystidia (ploo-ro-si-sti-dee-uh)

Cheilocystidia (ky-lo-si-sti-dee-uh) ch = k, ei = long i

Ganoderma (gah-nah-duhr-muh)

I found that Google Translate, when set to Latin, will offer a pronunciation option.  I'm sure it is not perfect, but it gives you a really good sense of how it should sound in Latin.

For example: https://translate.google.com/#la/en/Panaeolus%20foenisecci

That is actually pretty cool, didn't realize that "cybe" could be pronounced like that.
