Man you guys are being real asses about this whole thing. It didn't affect you at all and plenty of people enjoyed it.

If the forum mods and administration have been seeing problems with the chat staff for so long, how come there was never any effort to help us get better at our jobs, or attempt to get better OPs in there?  Seems to me that the first logical step would have been to try and help the staff get better at their jobs before simply removing the feature entirely.

I know I'm not the only person who wants an answer from moderation/administration on this question.

The real-time nature of chat makes it impossible to moderate all the time.  That is not a technical flaw that can be fixed, it's an inherent flaw in chat.

All of these questions have been answered, you just don't like the answers.
The whole thing was beyond repair and got scrapped.
Sub-par moderation isn't exactly coachable, and the character flaws in question have definitely been exposed in this thread.

Again, eliminating shroomery chat was the best option possible and that's pretty much end of story.

Why do plenty of other websites have no problem moderating chat servers? It's not impossible to moderate all the time, there just needs to be enough people to do so. We understand that you and others don't think there are a sufficient number of mods but that's not an inherent flaw in chat but rather an inherent flaw in the user base here.

This in conjunction with sub-par moderation was a certain recipe for disaster.

And your response does not even address my question.  Getting people in there to moderate 24/7 CAN be done.  And even if it couldn't, there are chat systems that allow the operators to put operation hours on the client, or disable the chat when an OP is not online.  If so many other websites out there can run a chat service with no issues, there's no reason why the Shroomery can't as well.  Oh wait, we do have a reason, mods and administration refusing to work with the chat ops.

Look, I'm not trying to shit on anyone here.  I understand the issues and I sympathize with those that were affected by chat overflow and all that.  I can see how the annoyances of such could become overwhelming.  I understand the greater liability involved with a real-time-chat.  I understand that chat moderation wasn't quite up to par.  I understand that chat is something of a financial drain even when everything runs smoothly, because of the lack of ad views over time.

All I want to say on the matter, and I hope someone is taking some of this shit to heart, is that the feature was worth the extra effort.  I've made friends there I wouldn't have otherwise met.  We kind of had our own little circle here, and I think I can speak for those of us that spent alot of our time in chat by saying this has just been taken away from us.  Over things that had nothing to do with us.

I think steps should have been taken toward making chat a better experience for everyone involved, as JoieDeVivre has mentioned several times over the course of the thread.  A burden it may be, but I believe it is a worthwhile one, and that all efforts should go toward lessening that burden.  It would need tighter moderation and probably more mods, and give forum mods access to the chat logs, or even have full transparency, so that there's never any doubt on an issue.

Surely something can be done here.  The boards just aren't the same.  When you chat with the same people on a daily basis, there's a connection that just cannot be replaced by these threads.

I mean maybe OP those that are on constantly, that are clearly spending alot of time in the rooms [which most of the ex chat Ops did].  I'm just throwing out ideas... I realize this decision isn't mine to make, but surely any solution is better than no solution.  For those of us that made that chat our virtual stamping grounds, this really isn't fair at all.  Not that that seems to matter much.

Because our users aren't like the users on other websites.  It's a rougher crowd.

We can't ask chat mods to be in every possible channel, and never look away from the screen.

If a forum mod needs to use the restroom or sleep, they can do that, and moderate just fine.  If a chat mod goes to the restroom, all hell can break loose.

The inherent flaw in chat is that someone needs to be looking at it all the time.  That's not a fixable problem.

People can't be asked to sit in front of the screen the whole time.

I only gave you a bad rating because you were trolling. That was the first time. Then the second time (after you "melted" to the admins to change it)
was because you're so butthurt about a bad rating.

If there were enough chat mods, there would be enough overlap that one of them would always be watching the room.  It isn't as though it's not a simple matter to PM another mod saying "hey, i gotta run to the bathroom, would you keep an extra eye out for me?"  Technical flaw, easily fixed.

It's really no different than a forum mod going to the restroom... all hell can break loose in a thread in a matter of minutes as well.  I've seen it happen in the past.

The same goes for the 'rougher crowd' excuse - the same applies to the forum.

There's already an official shroomery channel.  I'm in it now, and frankly, it sucks.  None of the same people here, and most of them are saying very little.  Besides, there's no access to the graemlins at all.  Which we all know is a big part of what makes the shroomery so awesome.  If the forums went down over some similar bullshit, would you be content to just go to another community?
