Courtesy and Respect - Lessons in the art of complaints
    #1832958 -

I think if we would have more constructive discussions if people followed a few simple steps to give suggestions, criticisms, and yes for complaints.

Lets take an example in real life. A man sits down to complain to a chef about his meal.

Scenario #1

Customer: "You are doing a terrible job, this food is done all wrong and I could do a better job. Maybe you are too lazy or something, but I demand you make me a chef or make some serious changes"
Chef: "I do my best and work hard to prepare those meals. How dare you criticize me when you have no idea the work that goes into this! How dare you sir!"

Scenario #2

Customer: "Hi, thanks for sitting down with me to discuss my meal. I know you must work really hard and I'm sure you do an excellent job here. I was impressed with the speed of service and the presentation of my food. However I was somewhat dissapointed with the meal itself, I felt it was lacking proper seasoning and a little bland. Maybe its just me and my own personal taste, but I wanted to know what you thought about this particular dish and what you hope your customers get out of it."
Chef:"Thank you for the compliments and yes I do take very seriously any concerns my customers have. Sometimes a meal isn't done properly and its important that I be made aware of it. So thank you for taking time to talk to me. I feel this meal is meant to be very slightly seasoned in order to bring out the natural subtle taste of the food, and I can see how people who enjoy more seasoned food might be dissapointed. Maybe a note on the menu for this meal stating that its a subtle and has little seasoning to let people know beforehand how it is presented."

Well this little lesson makes the point that you get about 10000 times further in life when you have to complain or make suggestions to improve something by simply being polite and respectful of the person you are speaking to.

If you choose the 1st route you get mainly defensive responses and you get often nowhere but angry.

I find it VERY interesting that people yell at someone and then get upset when that person responds in a negetive manner. You teach others how to respond to you, if you are polite and respectful; you will get much further in life.

Do onto others as you would have the do onto you. Truer words have not been spoken.

So please if you have a beef, let us know, but please try to avoid being rude/offensive/disrespectful. Even if you have the right to be, don't. It takes a lot of class to not be the asshole when you have every right to be.

If you truly feel the ultimate goal of your post in this forum is to enduce change, then consider using the most effective form of communication when dealing with a complaint/criticism/suggestion, because if you feel that you are promoting change by being disrespectfull/rude/inconsiderate, then you are only kidding yourself that this approach will get you anywhere but frustrated.

Please consider this, its tough to work hard on something you care about only to have people be rude when they find something to point out and complain about. Remember we are all human, we all make mistakes, and we all want to do better. Remember, how you choose to behave makes a big difference in how you are recieved.

My suggestion is to always try to do better for myself, being better includes putting up with crap but not letting it get to me (which of course I don't do perfectly).. But I will always strive to be better, and to do better.

'Settling' or 'putting up with' are not words I like in life. If no one in the world but myself tries to be nicer and respectfull to others, then I'm satisfied that at least I'm doing my part.

The point of this post was not about people sucking up, its quite clearly about how it is in our imperfect world right now, rudeness gets you nowhere, politeness/respect gets you far.

Nobody is saying suck up to get something, only the simplest and most obvious method of communication where you respect the person you are speaking to or they will not respect what you have to say.

I don't know where you live but where I live people I deal with daily are by far mostly all respectful and courteous. But then again I live in Canada

This is similar to when someone cuts you off in traffic, you honk then they flip you off and start yelling obscenities. They don't want to acknowledge their mistake so they project the negativity onto you. If you respond in kind, they feel justified in their negative response. Any further attack on their part they now see as self-defense.

That's why it's so important to remain calm in confrontation when the other party is not, because doing so only leaves one person yelling and looking like an ass.

Exactly. You have two choices in that situation, the common one is to respond and give into your anger. The other is to blow it off and let it go since its not worth the energy to get upset over.

Life is much better if you blow off pointless things like bad drivers, otherwise life is full of aggrivation.

What I find most common amongst angry people is that they think its their duty to be mad under circumstances where their expectation of others is broken.

Sadly happyness is not sweating others actions, and for most people this is a hard lesson to learn.

Well my response to that is this:

If you suggest something and it doesn't go anywhere; well it is possible that people do not agree or feel the suggestion isn't the best one.

We have plenty of suggestions, but if we implemented every suggestion we would not have a smoothly running BB as we have today.

Say for example you feel strongly about a suggestion, besides posting in this forum you can PM admins privately, keep bumping your suggestion thread, etc.. All are very effective means and do not require you to be an asshole about it

Every individual has their own unique opinion on how best to run this site, and its important to understand that not all suggestions will be realized, thats simply how decision by comittee works.

Okay... one very small point to make out, and while I'm not a mod, or an admin here, I'm an AOp in the Shroomery's OBC (original bastard child), #shroomery... all the time, I get people complaining about being banned for silly things like saying "hay ware kan i by sum shromes and hwo muhc wil tehy b????" and suchlike... I say "well, we don't allow talk of drug deals in here" and invariably they respond with "u kant ban me 4 dat we got fre spech", but folks, I have a really, really sad realization for you... while we do try to preserve some illusion of free speech and democracy, IRC is not a democracy, no private property is a democracy, and no forum can be a democracy.  These are the people in power, and if you have to, God forbid, show some RESPECT to the people who generally put hours per day into keeping your stupid cruisy internet lives running with some modicum of smoothness.  Would it *REALLY* kill you?  It's not like any of the mods get paid, and the admins aren't exactly raking it in hand over fist, either.  Seeing things like "oh thats not fair we shouldn't have to be nice to the mods/admins" just really gets to me.  Just my .02

The motto of the customer is always right is really a 90's thing. I've seen in more and more companies where this kind of thinking has gone the way of bad 80's suits.

More companies are realizing that bowing to all customers is not a sound way to run a business, because those small percentage who abuse this policy take a good chunk of money from a company in compensation and hassle that they create.

Re: Courtesy and Respect - Lessons in the art of complaints [Re: Thor]

And the companies are right. Some customers are just not worth the trouble.

That's been clear even on this site where people have bought pressure cookers, used them and returned them. All the while slamming the stores where they bought them. I know people who have done with clothes they had but a single use for.

People suck. and the people that suck cause higher prices for the rest of us.

Way to generalize and exaggerate..

I'm sure most of us don't like some of the stuff you guys are saying. We don't go around banning people because of it. If all you see is petty bannings and pointless drama then that's all you are paying attention to. If we just banned everyone for expressing their dissident opinions then there would be no one here bitching about the mods and admins. Think about it. If I banned someone for everytime I didn't like what they were saying.. there would be a lot more people banned. Fortunately, that's not how it works. And I fail to see how you could draw that conclusion at all without blowing one single incident way out of proportion.

You're right. It's not just what you say. It's who's saying it. The Swami banning has shown me that all that's necessary to be banned is that enough people in high positions have a personal vendetta against you. Then the other mods who don't have a grudge against you will stick up for the ones that do and say everyone's being ridiculous while dodging questions and using vague references to imagined behavior without citing specific examples.

It's b/c you guys can't get away with banning members for dissident opinions. What you can get away with, is questionably banning (not once, but twice) a respected member of the community. It's not a matter of what you do and don't; it's a matter of can and can't.

So, when an individual is mistreated, we should all turn a blind eye for the sake of the collective and because it "only one person"? Wow - good to see your Information Revolution is devoid of ethics and principles.

What is a certainty is that people will not always act perfectly, not always do the right thing, and sometimes the right thing is not going to sit well with some people.

Its a thankless job, truly, and I think our mods do one hell of a job. Are they perfect? No. But are any of us?

When someone you feel is 'mistreated' then you post your concerns in a polite manner as this thread requests and we will review it. That is the whole point of our form of checks and balances amongst mods/admins.

We are more than happy to get involved and seek to find a fair solution to all concerned.

For as many who think a certain ban was wrong, there are many others who would agree with it. Thats the challenge for any mod/admin to find a fair solution or stick to what is agreed amongst mods/admins as the right solution.

We value the input of the community and it has a great affect on our decisions after the fact, so like in all things by all means challenge our decisions if you feel something was unjust, just be courteous about it if you want your voice to be heard/respected.

Lastly if one cannot post feedback in the appropriate forum w/o being locked and banned then it is NOT a feed back forum.
So now LF please show me where I was "out of line" with my post or please butt out and let an admin speak.
BTW I still feel S&P is going down hill due to spurious posters lacking education and logic(the qualities which brought me to S&P)
That is my most courteous complaint re; S&P

This is a yin/yang never-ending battle type of shit.

Where brave warriors will martyr themselves in a big glorious expression of solidarity against the man. (Shroomery mods and admins)

The protest will highten, and more shall be banned. Lies and hypocracies will be exposed! Then everyone will calm down for a while until the next big drama-filled event occurs and once again the revolutionaries come out of the woodwork to begin yet another big crusade.

Oh how glorious. Why not spend all of this energy trying to change a few unfair drug laws or something?

So I'll be glad to bow out and let an admin speak. I was just noting some observations, not trying to replace the reply of the admins. peace.

Probably do.

But there is a big noble fght going on like I discribed.

During times like these one should not post in a manner similar to the aggressors, lest one be labeled as such.
