Happy to see there wont be anymore chat drama. I didn't notice/remember much when IRC was around but it got fucking bad whenever that chatterbox or whatever shit started.

the site has been DDoS'd several times in the past, the last one being severe and costing this site serious money as well as downtime, all stemming from chat. the chat as you know it wasn't implemented until IRC was shut down and it was part of the Shroomery, but we will no longer be hosting chat services on site.

getting rid of chat had nothing to do with Andy's user created forums idea. stop reading in to things when there is nothing there.

i'd like to know how you think you even begin to know what it takes to run a site this size with such a unique user base. the IRC chat being offered now is moderated, even by a couple of people who are moderators on this site. if you don't like IRC you are free to make your own chat.

I got bored of all of this stupid babble on about page 9... but I just wanna say a couple things...

I've seen a lot of accusations, and there's always two sides to all of these said accusations.... so it sounds like a pretty simple thing to solve to me...

Screenshots.

All bans/kicks should be required to have a logged screenshot, date/time/reason along with evidence. 

Any complaints against mods as far as abusing powers, etc..... same thing.  take a screenshot and report it.  Don't just bitch about it, provide proof and then things can be handled properly.

If everyone bitching about power abuse took screenshots and proved this shit, then maybe the mods that abused their powers would have been replaced.  But y'all just wanna bitch....

So why did chat continue to exist after the ddos attack?  Why did nothing ever happen to the chat mods who gave site wide bans for no reason?  How do most forum mods have any clue what was going on in chat if they never stepped foot in it?

The user created forums could be cool but as it stands now, it's a few okay ones in a sea of garbage which is why I "thought" the mods approved new forums before they were created.  I never said these things were linked in the way you posit.  I was just illustrating two questionable decisions around the same time.  I never said I know of the inner workings of this website.  Obviously, I'm not a mod and I don't have access to the mod forum.

chat was created AFTER the closure of IRC, in the attempt to SEE if a chat affiliated with the site would work. the administration decided it probably wouldn't work in the long-run and posed the question to the forum moderators, some of which apparently had to deal with people receiving complaints of site-wide bans from chat ops for chat infractions, which is definitely unacceptable. the moderators and administrators discussed the options we had at this point for several weeks and then we took a vote. the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of disabling chat features offered through the site due to liability and escalating drama; we don't want a Ripper repeat and we don't want to have to pay $25k for bandwidth again due to a DDoS attack. i think these are great reasons in favor of not offering the service any more.


i know nothing about the user created forums except for the fact that i hid them on the main forum index.

You guys complaining  DO realize, that shroomery IRC was killed, for good reasons. We didn't have a chat.
Then they made the "chatter" as a temporary experiment.. what like, a month ago? It was decided it just wasn't worth it or beneficial to the site, in the long run.

it doesn't seem like they do, actually. some do, like dystopia and cervantes who have been around long enough to have seen shit go down, but most people i see complaining are relatively new members.

I probably went on chat 3 days out of the week, and i rarely if never whiteness such fucked up behavior.

Cult room was always talking about cultivation and what not keeping it legit.

and general was legit too! Sure maybe some members could be a bit harsh sometimes, but there expressing there opinion, you cant get get butt hurt about it, just take it with a open mind and move on.

CHAT made shroomery feel like a family.

I see a lot of self-righteous entitlement in this thread.
Perhaps not all of you have been around long enough to see, but chat and IRC has consistently been a thorn in the shroomery's side for a long time.
It has been the single biggest causer of serious problems the SITE has ever faced. It has put us in jeopardy more than once.
Anyone is free to make their own chat servers. and that is even encouraged.

The fact of the matter is the admins combined with the mods inputs made an executive decision that was in the best interests of the Shroomery as a whole.
It is just not in our best interests to have it officially associated with or run by the shroomery.


It is not encouraged because all of my threads post inviting people to the chat I made got deleted, but before they did, ALOT of people came, after, none.

Please download MIRC or another chat client and point your irc server to irc.mushies.org  port 6667  room #cultivation  and #shroomery

Many likeminded shroomerites have been here since the old irc was taken down. I am sure old and new chatters will enjoy the service, it is ran by long time old school shroomery folks.  HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE SOON!!!

That is the atmosphere we were working to develop in chat, again...after the old chat was taken down by a malicious shroomery member and his possie.  Unfortunately in creating the type of atmosphere that is enjoyable to most of us, there is the need to weed out those that make chat not enjoyable.  Those people are the folks who got chat taken down, as well as the site administrators who failed to communicate with proper chat staff.  Also, as new mods were implemented they required training, and there was some mutiny on the ship where new mods were concerned, and supreme higher up administration. 

I certainly feel like five years of near constant dedication to the chat has gone down the drain, however, we have moved to new servers, and still co mingle as online family, and continue to grow the online mushroom community. 

Site politics and administration has become super lame.

We had chat be gone once before, and some folks never came back, join the old new old family! You must have a chat client to participate.  PM me if you need help with that.
