How do registration date and number of posts have anything to do with how good someone is as a mod? You're either a jerk about it or not, having more posts doesn't make you any less of an asshole or a shitty mod.

Being an asshole or a jerk is irrelevant to the issue...

What is relevant is the way in which one can manage members of this community in conversation. I don't see how someone who has been a member for 3 months could possibly be effective at that, although I'm sure there are some amazing people who learn very quickly.

Nonetheless, puting someone in a position of power and trust like that of moderator after only being a member for a few months is not only foolish, it also places members of this site at risk. In case you haven't noticed, much of the content on this sits is geared toward criminal conduct. Time alone is not enough to eliminate the possibility of infiltration by law enforcement, but it certainly should be one of the techniques used before giving a user special privileges.

Yes it is relevant. Someone who is going to abuse their powers is going to abuse their powers regardless of how long they've been a member or how many posts they have.

That is true, but completely unrelated to whether or not someone is a jerk. An asshole can be a perfectly fair and professional moderator, and a nice guy can be completely incompetent...

My point is that the smart way to choose moderators is by picking people you think you can trust...how one can trust someone who has been a member for three months is the real question.

All trustworthy members were at one point only active for three months. They were still just as trustworthy as when they were active for longer. Sometimes you can tell someone is trustworthy within a short time of knowing them. :shrug:

Unfortunately, moderation failed in chat...which specific moderators failed in which specific ways is a question that need not be answered at this point. Moderators were chosen poorly, trained poorly, supervised poorly, or any combination of those.

I liked the part where the chat mods attempted to parade around the main forums as if they were important or powerful and were instead met with complete indifference or told to bugger off completely.

Its not whether they are trustworthy, its whether we can be confident that they are trustworthy. All we have to go on is their record in the forums. Longer record: more information and more time for them to have temper tantrums/issues that show they likely aren't to be trusted.

Plus, longer participation probably does give you a better perspective on things. You see moderators come and go and make mistakes and good calls and probably get a better feel for how to handle situations.

I didn't like the fact people started responding to me differently. It was just a chat room. People even changed and removed negative ratings. It was kinda gay, I'd rather be run at with pitchforks and torches. Woulda been nice if OTD had a serious go at me and had fun with it.
