I think that the unfortunate reality is that the cancer that is /b/ is spilling onto Shroomery, ruining everything. For example, look at all the graemlins and smilies and memes used now compared to just a few years ago. It's now cool to use the internet all the time and post on message boards.

Well then maybe some should be recruited. I hate to toot my own horn here but I made it a point to avoid unfair action and to rely majorly on warnings, humor and explanations of why certain behaviors are not acceptable to diffuse problems in chat and it always worked well for me. Granted, there were plenty of times when I couldn't be on chat due to academic obligations but I do think there were plenty of chat ops that were as good as forum mods and there are plenty of users who would chat op fairly. :shrug:

you're not being punished. do you know what happened with IRC, why it's gone in an official capacity?


because some douchebag of a user and his douchebag friends got pissed off and took it out on the site even though it was a completely IRC related matter. this isn't even the first instance of shit like that happening stemming from a sponsored chat service, either. we would like to avoid another instance of it in the future, so chat is gone. i'm afraid to say that whining and complaining about it isn't going to get anyone anywhere and you might as well focus your efforts on other things.

All chat users have lost a part of the shroomery they enjoyed because of the actions of a few people.

I know what happened with IRC and I don't see how chatterbox was at risk for a similar instance. I don't see why chat was allowed to go on for so long if it was going to be deleted based upon what had already happened with a prior chat client.

So this isn't up for discussion at all? The only people who have any say are the people who had little to no experience with chat? Why are the forums not deleted? There's much more drama, flaming, bans and moderator complaints in regards to the forums. I'm just not understanding the rationale behind such a harsh decision.

I'm thinking I'll follow this road as well.  The chat was the primary thing keeping me here since behavior on the boards is just as bad as chat at it's worst.  My primary reason for staying as long as I have was to try and help out the noobs before they got flamed and put off of cultivation all together.  Since then I've found that people get get much higher quality information without the bullshit at other sites, such as Myco-Tek.  This site has a mindset that equates ego to knowledge, which gets boring to read very fast.

okay, to start, i loved IRC and spent quite a bit of time there, i was even an op. when they took it away, i was bummed, but i accepted it because i understood that after 10 years, it just wasn't working out in the best interest of the site itself--the Shroomery is about the FORUMS, not CHAT.

and while there may be more drama, flaming, and trolling on the forums, it's OUR drama, flaming, and trolling.

it tends to be one bad apple that spoils the bunch. SUCH IS LIFE.


i will say again, if chat had been implemented in the proper way, the way it should have been, this wouldn't even be an issue right now. instead, it was hastily launched without people willing to actively moderate it FROM OUR STAFF. due to the sensitive nature of the moderator forum, we can't appoint just anyone who wishes to moderate chat to be a moderator and have them deal with the issues that arise--it doesn't work like that.
