I can't wait to see the gun nuts trying to go up against the research of the most respect university on earth that only accepts the best and brightest among us.

what's to look at, a data set from the 90s? wasnt the gun homicide rate in
the US in the early 90s at around 30,000 and since then haven't more states
provided the 'will issue' carry permits, have gun sales also increased since
then and now the US has 1/3 the gun homicide rate it did then. if we dont
use old data then we can cherry pic our countries by arbitrary terms without
showing actual gun ownership rates

Quote:
2. Across high-income nations, more guns = more homicide.

We analyzed the relationship between homicide and gun availability using data from 26 developed countries from the early 1990s.  We found that across developed countries, where guns are more available, there are more homicides. These results often hold even when the United States is excluded.

You know Pris, normally you're one of the most logic and intelligent poster of the shroomery. But when it comes to guns, you simply lose it apparently. You refuse to accept the fact.

You may or may not realize this, but you are trying to disprove an extensive Harvard research paper made by people with doctorates in all kinds of field. Do you know how ridiculous it makes you sound? Your arguing against Harvard man! Harvard university... Think about it man, your up against the best university IN THE WORLD. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and be like "yeah, ok, so maybe Harvard is right...". Also, a massive research paper is not gonna biased to make the liberals right, its a research paper man, these things are neutral and show facts. Its scientifically accurate.

In a city that already had a low crime rate, have you seen what city has the lowest crime rate? It doesn't have a law permitting everyone to have a gun. Yeah that's interesting but doesn't really say much. Could you imagine how much worse relationships might be because of that law? Guns are already used for intimidating, and intimating intimates. Haha, thanks for proving my point for me

Both Firearm homicide rate and Overall homicide rate per 100,000 tell the tale of how the US is actually doing. Use those buttons at the top to order the list by either one, and see the (few) countries that are doing worse. Then look (a long long way down) to find most Western European countries where these things are pretty much an oddity.

In fact this whole thread is extremely peculiar to me. Owning a gun is something I never even considered, nor would I want people in most countries I visit to own them. Between the cops and the military, I think there's enough wackos with guns around, we definitely don't need more.

Oh and US people who cling to guns like they will actually do any good defending your freedoms, you seem to forget that that whole country is corporation-owned and run, tobacco and alcohol interests decide who the cops throw in jail, other interests decide where your troops go to blow up brown people, and come back as invalids themselves, and so on. At no point are you, individually or collectively, likely to defend yourself against that kind of thing with your pea-shooter. In other words, adding more guns to a fucked up system will not un-fuck it, on the contrary. The numbers in those lists show that quite clearly, and you have to wonder about the HUGE suicide rate in the US, from that first list.

Those socialist/fascist liberals won't stop until they get the guns.  They know they can't have the socialist utopia of their dream (aka North Korea) until they remove the population's ability to resist.  I love how they always cloke themselves in "the good of the people" - something none of their policies mysteriously have ever actually achieved.  The modern liberal movement has been at full steam for nearly 80 years and all we can say about it is that it has cost us dearly in nearly every category of human interest.

I haven't owned firearms for more than 30 years but this debate has reminded me that even mentally ill people like myself have a place at the gun counter and I just love the fact that AK's are real cheap right now.

I know that guns will never go away because if I really needed a weapon I could make one, guns and bullets included.  I am educated when it comes to science and basic engineering, as well as many other things.  I was given this by the society I live in, and I would want the same education for others.  This is not the same as being free to flood the market with cheap weapons for my own personal profit, I see that as dangerous and immoral.

Here's a short video helping you understand why the amount of guns has little relevance to how much crime exists. It's about 6 minutes and I know you spent more time reading some liberal propaganda bullshit. What's your idea? We will ban away violence with guns like how banning prostitution, alcohol, and drugs worked so effectively? Last time I checked that caused a higher rate of abuse/violence than regulation. Funny how that works.

99% of the time guns are not  fired to thwart a crime. Recent studies have shown millions of crimes stopped every year with a firearm are only from displaying that gun. Intimidation is an important tool in saving lives.

Here are some more interesting gun control facts

Do you know why Harvard has a such a great reputation? Because they don't manipulate their data to satisfy the guy that paid for it. If an institution like Harvard was caught doing that, it would be all over the news and it would put every research than came out of there in the "doubtful" section...

So Dr Judy Wood is a cunt therefore everybody with a doctorate is stupid right?

Also, Harvard has already proven that marijuana helps cure lung cancer. But of course, its from Harvard, so I'm sure the study was funded by potheads.

As for the full text of the study, you'll probably have to pay to get it. These kind of studies aren't the first hit on Google.

I don't possibly understand how banning guns would do anything or think it'd do anything. Taking one look at south america and their crime stastics, or switzerland, or the czech republic would contradict the idea that gun ownership has something to do with crime.

When people get sick we treat the illness. We don't treat the side effects because then the illness will just come back stronger and adapted. Gun crime is a result of poverty, missing social programs, fucked up tax brackets (education based on property taxes...wtf!), etc. Banning guns of any kind just keeps them away from... law abiding citizens. There are 500 million guns privately owned in america that are registered. People build their own guns ALL the time from raw aluminum. It's called a 100% build. That coupled with the fact that we are the largest distributers of arms around the world...lol. Fucking please. Some people just have a hard time swallowing that these things (drugs, guns, alcohol, prostitution, gambling etc.) are here to stay. Education and regulation is how we deal with these issues to minimize the harm.

Mutually assured destruction prevented nuclear holacost for 50+ years. That's how we thwart criminals from acting to begin with.

The colorado movie theatre shooter had seven movie theaters to chose from in the area. He chose the ONLY one that said "no guns permitted". HMM I WONDER WHY?!

Besides the self defense, constitution, and raw data showing that conceal carry reduces crime, the simple fact is guns are here to keep us civilians and not servants.

The United States has a very high rate of firearm death

Using recent data from the World Health Organization (WHO), this paper provides striking evidence on the size of the U.S. problems of gun homicide, overall homicide, gun suicide, and unintentional gun death compared to other advanced countries—for both genders and every age group.

Quote:
Firearms are used far more often to intimidate than in self-defense.

Using data from a national random-digit-dial telephone survey conducted under the direction of the Harvard Injury Control Center, we examined the extent and nature of offensive gun use.  We found that firearms are used far more often to frighten and intimidate than they are used in self-defense. All reported cases of criminal gun use, as well as many of the so-called self-defense gun uses, appear to be socially undesirable.

Oh what's the matter? watch the video and learn something?

Quote:
According to Dr. Gary Kleck, criminologist at Florida State University in Tallahassee and author of "Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America," a book used by many in the gun debate, 800,000-2,500,000 crimes are stopped by guns each year. The numbers are from different studies.

Interesting Statistics:

There were over 19,000 deaths by accidental drug overdose in 2004. The majority of these deaths were from prescription drugs, not illegal drugs. Banning prescription drugs makes as much sense as banning guns.

Should I look up how many firearm deaths there are in south america and what gun ownership is like? Should I look up switzerlands gun ownership and how many deaths there are? Or are you going to take the time to learn some simple fucking facts.

You come here posting some very weak evidence of nothing. Then you come in here and say states that allow shall issue don't change anything. So you mean to tell me that millions of armed citizens hasn't done anything to stop crime? You're joking, right?

You should open your mind. Why don't you watch that video again, because it's very clear. It's not contradictory at all. Next you'll tell me you don't understand the question followed by an "I love you". Stop dodging the evidence placed in front of you. Gun ownership in this country is not the source of violence. As you can see England's violent crime is 3.5x ours and their gun ownership is very low. Guns don't have feelings. Guns don't kill people. PEOPLE kill people. PEOPLE have feelings. Guns are inanimate objects and the culture and people behind those guns create crime data.

Maybe you should stop checking out the brady campaign just like I stopped using the NRA for gun data. I

1. In Jamaica, most gun homicides occur during disputes or are revenge killings.

We read the police narratives for every homicide in Jamaica, 1998-2002. The murder rate has been increasing steadily in Jamaica, and most of the murders are with firearms.  The principal motives are disputes and revenge.  Drugs, gangs, and political killings are no longer the main factors associated with murder.

Lemard, Glendene; Hemenway, David. Violence in Jamaica: An analysis of homicides 1998-2002. Injury Prevention. 2006; 12:15-18.

2. In Canada, most firearm deaths occur within 24 hours of the shooting

Using data for all firearm-injured patients in the Canadian National Trauma Registry, we evaluated demographic and causal factors of injury.  We found that about 40% of the shooting victims died in-hospital, with 83% of fatalities occurring on the first day.  ISS score, first systolic blood pressure, first Glasgow Coma Scale score, male gender and self-inflicted injury were all predictors of in-hospital death.

3. In Mexico as in the USA, more guns = more gun suicide; gun ownership levels are not related to non-gun suicide

We assess the relationship between handgun prevalence and firearm suicide across the 32 states of Mexico for 2005.  Where there were more handguns, there were more firearm suicides.  There was no relationship between handgun prevalence and non-firearm suicides.

Miller, Matthew; Borges, Guiherme. Firearms and suicide in Mexico: Intimations of mortality. Journal of Youth Studies. In press.

4. Israel and Switzerland are not awash with firearms

Gun advocates cite Switzerland and Israel as exemplars of nations with widespread gun ownership, permissive gun laws, and encouragement of armed civilians who can deter and thwart shootings.  These claims are evaluated with analysis of the International Crime Victimization Survey data and translation of laws and original source material.  Compared with the United States, Switzerland and Israel have lower rates of gun ownership, stricter gun control laws, and their policies discourage gun ownership.
