To get a hygrotherm or not to get a hygrotherm for GH?
    #17196672 -

So, ill be using a vicks v4500 and I'm still unsure of my source of heat at the moment.  Just wondering I f anyone has any experience with using a hygrotherm?  Ill be at work for the better part of the day a lot so it's gonna be hard to dial it in with timers and such.  Would be real nice to just have it turn humidifier off once it reaches proper RH and heat source whenst reaches proper temp.

Yes, have one....I got mine about 2 weeks ago and I love it...

There's just one thing I don't like about it...you cant control the RH drop...

For example...If I set it to 95%, it will run the humidifier until it hits 95 and then shut off, then it will drop to about 91-92% and kick back on.

This would be better IMO if there was a way to tweak that window of "RH Drop".(lets say down to 85%, and then kick on, or even 80%)

Other than that the hygrometer in it seems to be pretty accurate when compared to my 2 analogs.

Its easy to program and understand. I think its great...I'm saving wat too, because its only running my US when it needs to, not on a timer when it might not need to.

Why would you rather it drop down to 85 or 80% after reaching 95?  Isnt it better to maintain a constant RH of 95%?  Also, do you have the zoomed brand?

By RH drop I think you meant to say differential.  You can do what you want by using two humidistats. Set one to come on at 80% to 85%(or whatever) to lock in a relay.  Set the other one to 95% and use it to unlock the relay.  The relay contacts would then be connected to cycle the humidifier.

An alternative method would be to use a time delay relay and only one humidistat. When it calls for humidity, the timer would prevent the humidifier coming on for fifteen minutes or whatever setting you use after the contacts on the humidistat close, but would shut off immediately after the humidistat set point is reached.

I love mine a lot.

Another thing you can do hacker for a humidity drop is put your hygrotherm on a timer and make it turn off for a certain amount of time. It has a built in battery so it will save your humidity settings.

Because there should be a little drop to make room for evaporation....

Or maybe im just over thinking the differential(Thank You RR)? Maybe that little differential i have is good? Maybe I'm just being anal. I dont know but i know that for my first GH run I got pretty good results with that kind of a differetial just using timers...

I'm just trying to replicate that success, but maybe, like I said, I'm just over thinking it.

It depends on species.  With shiitake I bring humidity up to 99%, and then let it drop to 55% to 60% before bringing it back up again.  Other species benefit from a lesser differential, but the point is to get some evaporation going, which is the number 1 pinning trigger.

Would this work for this application? http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/HONEYWELL-Digital-HumidifierDehumidifier-3CHL5?Pid=search

I really have no clue how these work (yet) but am very interested in achieving humidity differential.

This is what I use. I set it to turn on at 90% it raises to about 95% after it turns my humidifier off, but I use an ultrasonic. It works very well for me and it is only $30. I paid $50 for mine and had to wait 2 weeks to get mine from china...

I know this link will go dead after awhile so for future people wanting to see what it is go to ebay and type in humidity controller and look for  this...

110V Digital Air Humidity Control Controller WH8040 Range 1%~99% RH HM-40 Type

I was going to put a picture up but I cant figure out how to do it while editing this post so I will put the pic up in my next post about how the paper towel test worked out.

Does it achieve a differential or just maintain a constant RH?

Yes it has a differential I believe it is 1 to 50 so if you set it to turn on at 90% and have the differential set to 1 it it actually turns on at 89% and turns off at 90%. I believe that is how it works I dialed it in and haven't had to mess with it in a long time so that is how I remember it. If you need to know anything else let me know.

Awesome.  You just helped me make my next major purchase.

Edit: Ok, at $30 from Ebay it's hardly "major"  lol.

I did a salt test to see how accurate it is, and the one I got says 76% on the salt test. So I guess that would mean it is accurate. I have been using it for about a year and had no problems.

I searched high and low for a hygrotherm like device that was cheaper, but the hygrotherm was the cheapest humidistat I could find.. I wish I would have seen this before! But I use the heater part of hygrotherm as well so I'd be SOL there. Plus I got a great deal on mine, I received a $20 amazon card for my bday and if you join amazon prime you get $10 off your first purchase and overnight shipping for 2.99. It came out to be a penny under $28. For thirty bucks I kinda want to get this to try it out. Although with the hygro therm I achieve differentials by putting it on a timer to completely shut off. Still want one though

..so what if you want a differential shift with one tub in a GH, but not the other tubs?

I just bought a hygrotherm, so I'm interested to see how it performs. Got it rigged up to a bulk US, and does what it's supposed to do. The thermometer plug will come in handy this winter too.

Generally people use an entirely separate FC to automate while providing different fruiting conditions. I don't think there is any reasonable way for a humidistat to create multiple fruiting conditions within the same FC.

The salt test is not accurate at high humidity levels.  Just because it reads 75% with salt doesn't mean it will show 99% just prior to saturation.  Use the damp towel method.
