GH Question
    #18444919 -

So I just mad a fully automated green house and wanted an opinion from experienced growers on it. I bough an ultrasonic humidifier holds about 1.5 gallons. It's been keeping the RH at 95% and I have an oscillating fan hitting it. I was just wondering if I should put the humidifier on a timer or not? Or the fan, just not sure it's weird not having to fan it and spray it to keep the humidity up haha

So I've had this think up with an ultrasonic humidifier and I have a fan running indirectly but, it's getting crazy wet inside there to the point that everything is getting waterlogged and I had to toss the substrates out. Anyone have a solution to prevent so much condensation?? Thanks!@

The ultrasonic provides a "misting" by running 15 minutes on every 1-2 hours. This keeps the casing layer moist but never wet.

Humidity (environment): A filter/wick-type cool mist humidifier is used to buffer the RH levels inside the GH.  My humidifier in my environment keeps the RH level at a minimum of 85%. Every one hour the ultrasonic is on for 15 minutes and the RH jumps up for a bit.

FAE: As much as possible. For low-RH tolerant species: With the filter/wick-type cool mist buffering the RH, you can and should run your cool mist 24/7.  This provides a ton of FAE. You can adjust the amount of FAE by how zipped/unzipped the curtain is on the sides. For cubes: I have been finding my casing layers dry up too quickly. To compensate, the cool mist is on 30 min then off for 30. The ultrasonic runs 15 min on every hour, right after the cool mist shuts off

My GH:

ultrasonic
fan
hygrotherm

It sucked to drop the money up front, but now that I have my hygrotherm I'll never turn back to trying to dial-in humidifiers on timers. Bleh

FAE a lot. Read per species on what kinda of FAE they like. Such as cubes can tolerate a good bit of CO2 but on the other hand mushrooms of the panaeolous variety will not.

I use that setup as well.  I have a FAE fan that gives me a cycle of fresh air 8 times a day.

Do you have a link for a tek to build that with a hygrotherm?

Ugh, hygrotherms.

I never got good performance from that POS.

Turns out a simple 15 minutes on every hour for the ultrasonic + 30 on/30 off for the cool mist was all I needed.

It works for most people, just adjust the ultrasonic timings as needed depending on how much your substrates/casing layers dry up.

Mine works fine.  But everyones got their own story.

I cannot find a humidifier tek right now.. You can't go too wrong with an ultrasonic (1-3 disk) and an inline fan to move the air.. Something like this:

I just don't see the point of trying to keep the environmental RH at a very high, set amount.

The RH that matters is at the surface of the substrate.

I case everything that goes in my GH and they'll sit at 99% RH at the surface of the substrate even when the humidity in the GH itself is around 85%.

I do this by using the ultrasonic as a "misting" device to keep the casings moist. 15 minutes on every hour, with one or two 30 minute cycles scattered throughout the day for good measure.

My cool mist (filter or wick-type) kicks on 30 minutes before the ultrasonic to exchange the air in the chamber completely while buffering the RH at about 85%.

When the ultrasonic comes on, the cool mist shuts off.

When I tried keeping the GH at 90-95% RH with the hygrotherm, the poor thing had to run the ultrasonic every 10-15 minutes just to try to keep up.

I also found my performance was pretty mediocre compared to my current setup.

Just my two cents about greenhouses.

Maybe I will give that a shot.  I just get a warm and fuzzy knowing that the RH is at proper levels with the hygrotherm.

I also cycle my hygrotherm off for 30 minutes multiple times throughout the day.

If you have the time you should definitely do a comparison.

I should mention that I am a huge stickler for fresh air. I just recently decided to put the cool mist (FAE) on 30 on/30 off timer and things really picked up in there for the cubes.  When I was using the hygrotherm I was also running my cool mist 24/7.

I bet it would work better had I used the hygrotherm with the ultrasonic while the cool mist was on timings.

Maybe I'll dig up the old POS when fall is approaching and give it another go myself.

You could do worse than to follow that tek.  litotes

FH, I hear ya on the FAE.. I have plans to really increase mine.. Along with some automated fans over the tubs.. I have a feeling pumping fresh air into the GH simply isn't enough.
