Adding a resistor to an ultrasonic humidifier

I've got a ReliOn Ultrasonic Humidifier (Wal-Mart $34) and want to add a resistor to the unit to limit humidity output. My question is where to insert the resistor without slowing down the fan. On the potentiometer, there are 5 wires. One is labled "IN", one is "OUT", one is "COM", and the last two are blue wires labeled "VM" which run into the ultrasonic vibration device.

My thoughts are placing the resistors in line on the blue wires, but which one? both? either? I wanted to see if there was any feedback before I fried myself. Thanks!

Take it apart and wire the resistor in before the humidity slider. No humidity slider? Wire it to the power line going to the transducer.
