infinitely variable ultrasonic humidifier

I searched but didn't see anything related...so I thought I'd pass this little discovery along...

I had one of these lying around for another project:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=43584
Its a "Router speed control". Basically just a potentiometer to limit voltage I suppose. I plugged my little desktop ultrasonic humidifier into it and found I could adjust the mist output from zero to full bore with the dial. This also adjusts the base unit's fan speed, so if you tweak it down to a really low mist setting, you may need an additional fan (I was thinking of using a spare atx powersupply I have lying around to blow into the humidifier to boost its temp a tad above room temperature and get a little extra air exchange).
Alternatively, I'd imagine you could easily isolate the base unit fan's power supply to be upstream of the potentiometer so it continues at full bore, while the 'router speed control' dial is left to adjust mist output alone.
I hope that helps.
If any of you using ultrasonics are having problems with too much water output, give one of these things a try.

note: the range of adjustment to where mist is still produced is only over about 10% of the total range of the knob (it still has to be cranked up around '8' or '9' or so, but its still plenty sensitive to dial in what you need. Just don't give up on it if it seems to only be on/off...you just need to move the dial more slowly to find its sweetspot.

Ahh cool...I use one of those voltage adjusteable universal adapters for such purposes but I think yours could handle much larger appliances.
