Newbie with many questions:

Hi everyone. New kid on the block here...i smell a new hobby coming on...some questions though (sorry for the dumbness of some of the):

- Humidifiers: I've been looking around and i haven't found any "ultrasonic" humidifiers -- i found some cool mist and warm mist ones, but nothing with the actual word "ultrasonic" on it. These were from manufacturers like Bionaire and were about $70-$130cdn new, so they're obviously pricy...are all of these newer kind of humidifiers ultrasonic? What kind do i want?

- Temperature: I know that there are ideal temperatures to have in a terrarium, but do you ideally get the right temperature if your humidifier is set up right, or should you have some kind of seperate heat source or something?

- Air exchange: the PFtek method talks about fanning, and the MMGG talks about a hole in the bottom of your terrarium if i recall correctly...is there a worry about air contaminants in the terrarium with a small hole in the bottom like that? What's the best way to allow for air exchange?

- Sterility: Things need to be sterile. If i was to: spray lysol in my working area, disinfect working surfaces, sterilize tools, wash hands well, and wear a face mask, would that be enough precaution? It seems to me like even without drafts of air that a lot of crap can still float into your work, especially with something like working to make a spore syringe or something...in all i've read sterile conditions are stressed as important, but there isn't a lot of information on achieving good sterile conditions...

I'm sure i have plenty more questions - that's enough for this post. If you have AIM i'd love to talk with experienced growers about technique and such. Drop me a line (AIM SN = Bigwelbyo)

Thanks all for reading this :)

Matthew

- Humidifiers: For the start I would go with the perlite humidification tek. No humidifier.

- Temperature: For optimum temperature read P. cubensis Growth Parameters .
But cubensis grows(not so good, but it does) if you have a normal room temperature at all steps(like 70?F).

- Air exchange: Fanning a few times a day is sufficient when using the perlite bumidification.

- Sterility: What you described are good prcautions, the faster you work and the less time the things you use are open to air, the less the numer of particles that will float in.
Working in a small room(bathroom) that you sprayed down with lots of water is also good.
Later, if you wont to grow a little more than only a few shrooms a HEPA hood is highly recomemded.

Alright...
If you want to use a humidifier just go to a whatevermart and get the cheapest "cool mist" one they have....that should be fine.... as for the sterility of your workspace...i prefer the oven tech plus most of the precautions you stated in your post........
