humidity in gh
    #18258615 -

I have a 4 tier green house with an ultrasonic going 24/7 and a desk top fan on a timer 45 min off 15 on... heres the problwm....the ultrasonic gets the humidity up within a half hour normally but as soon as the fan kicks on the humidity drops down to 50% idk what to do to stop that from happening... should I construct a bottom for my green house? do u think 2 ultrasonics will stop my humidity from dropping so much

the question is why is your greenhouse not being flooded by running an ultrasonic humidifer running 24 7

what are you using to measure humidity.

Running a fan for that amount of time is going to drop humidity seriously, for FAE normally slits are made in the walls, the currents created by heat from mycelium should draw in air and you can fan it out now and then.

If you were wanting to use a fan to do FAE then id only do it for a 30 seconds several times a day if its needed at all.

but i dont use a greenhouse so i havnt experimented with that kind of thing

Maybe start by reversing the on/off times for your fan. 15 on, 45 off. They need plenty of FAE, but your method seems a little excessive. Or are you able to control the fan speed? Might be a little too large/fast for your requirements

Whoa there OP.

That desktop fan probably won't provide enough FAE.

You're going to want to run your ultrasonic 10-15 minutes on every 1-2 hours.

And then consider picking up a cool-mist (filter-type) humidifier to provide 24/7 FAE buffered at about 80-85% RH.

Here's how I set mine up:

Two 4-tier wire shelves back to back. Ultrasonic on the top, Cool mist (filter-type) in the bottom corner. Curtains unzipped 1/4 of the way on both sides.

Curtains pulled back by the cool mist for good FAE.

Timer for the ultrasonic is 15 minutes on every two hours.

Variations on this setup basically just involves finding a good timing for your ultrasonic. I would start with 15 minutes on every two hours. They will literally grow themselves, total set-n-forget, once you get it down.

:goodluck:

idk why I don't have a puddle either...my first grow I had that problem so I figured a fan would stop that....and it did...running it 15 min once an hour...

im not at home right now when i get there im gonna try and figure out how to upload pics of my set up...the fan seems to be giving me too much air on the 15 minute cycle...im gonna try to get my husband to rig up a different timer for me

The lack of puddling is not necessarily a bad thing. If your greenhouse is dialed in perfectly, you won't have a puddle or at least not much of one.

Having a puddle is not necessarily good either. It could mean all your moisture is condensing too rapidly or you are over-saturating.
GH's can be tricky to dial in.

This is a good start. I think you really need a good hygrometer to get dialed in.

Many people use computer fans without issues. Mine sucked the walls in. I got a short interval timer and set it 4 minutes on and 1 hour off.

I eventually took mine down because of the maintenance. Good Luck. Monotubs just seem easier.

I've never needed one

The RH that matters is at the surface of the substrate.

Though I do case all my substrates I put in the GH.

The cool mist provides constant FAE (which you can never go wrong with in a GH with cubes IMO), nice evaporation and buffered RH levels throughout while the ultrasonic "mists" the casings and spikes the surface RH back up to 99% if it dried out at all.

Even with no casing layer the process is the same. It may need more frequent "mistings" from the ultrasonic though, to keep the surface from drying up too quickly.

It works wonders and is very simple. I like it because there is really only one variable to worry about.

It's just one of many ways to do it but I always recommend this setup to people struggling with getting their GH running.

Well, I suck at the GH. That's why I don't give out too much GH advice.

I usually recommend tearing it down and doing monotubs. But that's not what people want to hear. It's likely I have nothing else useful to say on the subject.

I tried to return the ultrasonic and get a cool mist humidifier but walgreens  does not carry cool mists :frown:

Don't return the ultrasonic, use the coolmist with the ultrasonic. A cool-mist alone will not provide proper RH levels unless you order an old impeller-style online. And those are a PITA to dial in IME.

You can find filter-type cool mists at walmart or any department store really. They'll be in the pharmacy section during spring/summer months.

I am trying to locate the right humidifier but until then do u think running  the ultrasonic on a 15 on 45 off turning fan on every couple of hours for a few minutes and a rub of perlite at the bottom do it for a couple of days??

Re: humidity in gh [Re: starshine666420]

I run like 1 inch of perlite on a cement tray below the greenhouse.

the greenhouse has a slight tilt, so water buildup on the racks run to one side and deposit on the bottom perlite if there is any.

i would start off your vicks or sonic on a 30minute on, 30minute off schedule first and see what water buildup you got after 24hours and how often you got to refill it.

a small pc fan inside the chamber with a speed controller is ideal, and have it run whenever your humidifier runs, it helps maintain flow of air and stop water buildup on the tent.  but still lets humidity stay at about 95%.

if you have a hygrometer or hygrotherm, etc.. use it as a guide, but judge by the water buildup.. you want just enough humidity that it keeps your greenhouse humidity up while not running.. but not too much that water is saturating your grow space..  basically run it but if the hygrometer goes around 80% or so in off times, you should probably increase your timer... etc..  dial it in!

best of luck

you can run both cool mist and ultrasonic.. i run coolmist on the bottom rack, and pipe in the ultrasonic through the top..  so fog pipes in and flows from top down and humidity from cool mist blasts up.
