GH humidity issues
    #17171951 -

I am in the process of dialing in my GH.

I got a cool mist humidifier that will be running 24/7 that is piped in at 3 levels but that only keeps the RH at around 70-75 on its own.

I got an ultrasonic humidifer piped in on the top that I was planning on running for 15 minutes every hour but whenever the Ultrasonic is shut off the humidity level will drop down to 70-75 within 10 minutes. In order to maintain 90% RH on an empty GH I need to keep the ultrasonic on the whole time running on medium.

Is this normal? All my research I didnt come across a person who had to keep their Ultrasonic on, everyone seemed to have a cycle. Am I missing something?

Having substrate in the GH will cause the RH to rise.
I slight dip in your RH is good when running GHs.
You can't properly dial in a GH w/out it being at least 1/2 full.
Think of trying to dial in a monotub w/out any substrate in it.

I got a couple trays on Perlite in there with it...does that make any difference? or does it have to be substrates

The perlite will help, too. Make sure to have holes in the bottom of the trays to allow air through them & to wick moisture into the air.

I think most of the problem is that you're piping everything into the greenhouse. I put my ultrasonic fogger inside the greenhouse for primary humidification.

You do NOT need to run that external cool mist 24/7. That's part of your problem right there. Keep in mind that when you're ducting everything into the FC ... what goes in also blows an equal volume of air out. I would focus on primary humidification first. IF you feel the need to automate FAE then you can run an external humidifier using a timer.

I don't even use a cool mist at all. I run a fan & fogger inside my greenhouses. Both the fan & fogger is connected to a Hygrotherm to control the RH. I mist as needed & fan 3 times per day. Fanning provides the majority of my FAE and I do not have problems maintaining any RH setting I want.

alternatively you could put an ultrasonic mist maker inside your coolmist reservoir to more evenly and consistently spread out the humidity. you may find that you over saturate any trays on the top level of your greenhouse while leaving the bottom ones to dry out. i would make a mixing box in between the coolmist and the piping though to ensure even distribution.

I would then run the coolmist 24/7 and the mist maker 30 min on, 15 off. but that's just me, every setup is different and timers need to be programmed on a case by case basis.

Assuming you've already calibrated your hygrometer via the damp towel method. . .

You're going about humidification wrong.  Don't 'pipe in' from a cool mist humidifier.  They are not designed to develop static pressure, so you're ruining the flow.  Also, the mist condenses in the pipe instead of into the air.

All the humidity should be introduced at the bottom of the grow area.  Humid air is lighter than dry air and will naturally rise.  Set the humidifier on the floor of the unit, and cut slits and 'windows' in the plastic for passive fresh air exchange.

Ultrasonic foggers operate best in shallow water. If you submerge a fogger in deep water it won't function at all. IF you were to drain most of the water out of the humidifier, so that the fogger can function, then you're going to run out of water very quickly and maintenance will be very high (having to refill often).

Here's a pic of an ultrasonic fogger I placed inside of a heavy duty tupperware bowl. Notice beside it is a mini float valve. The float valve maintains the proper water level and automatically adds water as needed. The float valve is plumbed to a reservoir using a 1/4" line. I keep a fan sitting right beside this thing on the bottom tier of the greenhouse. Both the fan & fogger are plugged into a Hygrotherm to automatically maintain the RH. Here's a video of the prototype in action.

FAE can be done by simply unzipping the greenhouse a little bit which is not critical because greenhouses are NOT air tight around the bottom anyway. The fan does drawn in fresh air when it runs. You do not have to cut slits in greenhouses.

or you could just make a self watering dish like they make for dogs and cats:

this one sits in a walk in shower, but you could easily put a lid on it and pipe through it, easy peasy.

but floatvalves are fun. tinkering ftw!

^ ^ ^ Same principal just bulkier. do you have a fan for air recirculation?

In my experience with foggers, if there's no air movement while the fogger operates then the fog just sits there and doesn't get kicked into suspension.

yeah its a little ghetto heh  didnt feel like building anything to complicated this time around, and monotubs just dont cut it in the high desert. at least not for me.

Also, this kind of setup is highly dependant on the correct amount of airflow at the right angle. pointed directly at it, too high, and the air just obliterates the mist against the sides and it immediately condenses. too weak of airflow and, like you said, the mist just sits there, taking all day to bring the fruiting chamber to the correct humidity.

That's exactly why I have my units on the lower tier of my greenhouses and a fan right beside it pointing straight up. The fog gets lifted and shot straight up. The prototype is shown here. Watch what happens after the fan is shut off.

It appears you're sacrificing proper fresh air flow in favor of excess humidity.  The former is far more important for good performance than the latter.

Monotubs and shotgun terrariums work perfectly in high desert.  It's rare around here for the humidity to be above 10% all summer, and in the winter I have to keep a pot of water boiling on the wood stove just to keep the indoor humidity up to 30% or so.

is your fan located inside or outside the greenhouse?

I got a fan on high changing out the air in the chamber 4 times an hour. the tubs have many holes and there is a nice current going in there. its definitely not sacrificing fresh air for humidity if you compared it to a monotub since its essentially a monotub in a turbulant, high humidity environment.

as far as monotubs working in the desert, sure. however i have bad experiences with them and go with what works for me.

I always put my ultrasonic inside of the GH

Check local thrift stores for cheap ultrasonics

Inside the greenhouse on the lowest tier.

THANKS for the link! I'm saving that one. Hygrotherms are about $70 and this is much more affordable. If I ever need a new one I'll certainly try this one.

Awesome, thanks! I'll need to pick one of these up soon.
