I'm using the tupperware (poor man's) pod for the first time and the humidity is only at 81%. It's bubbling just fine though and the temp is 75. Any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.

Are you using a good hygrometer? Most of the less expensive ones are unreliable and not to be trusted.

It's been running for about an hour. Haven't put the cakes in yet. I'm waiting for the rh to climb. It just went up to 82%! Maybe I'm just too impatient. Think it'll keep climbing?

I'm using hydroton and a nice digital hygrometer from a cigar shop.

your hydromomoterthingamombobthingie is probably a piece of shit, they all are... "smell" the air (open the chamber and take a whiff of the air) if its really damp and moist = 100%
thats how i tell.. i smell the air.. i can tell 100% from not 100% :P

101% is too much. the closer the better in the case of cakes.
what is this 'hydroton'??? is it a perlite replacement or a water additive?

Hydroton is a cheaper version of geolite. They are small round porous stone pebbles that allow air (gasses) to flow through them (alot like lava rocks). They are used in hydroponic growing.

cool thanks. i know what geolite is i just never heard if hydratron.
and being, you dont really need to seal a rubbermaid tub; unless youre doing cakes and need ultimate humidity.... it will stay humid enough for a casing fro shizzle.
but if you really feel inclined go to k-mart and get 1/2" weatherstripping for sealing around doors and storm windows and shit an stick that to your lid where the tub meets it

Negetive. You only need 80% or so terrarium humidity with casings.

You did not waste money, the cigar shop hygrometers are of good quality and reliability. But if you don't want it, pm me and i'll take it off of your hands

I'm wondering what the problem is. I'm just using cakes, no casing (newbie), so I need more than 84% rh. I've done everything right as far as I can tell. I added more hydroton (part lava rocks), more water, I sealed the pod to keep in moisture and got the pump that Magash suggested........still 84%.

heres what i do. i get the biggest damn tub i can find from the dollar store clear sides doesn't matter if the tops aren't clear.cut two half inch holes in the top on differnt sides. and get plain jane perlite from lowes or wally world. put it in a strainer soak until water comes out the bottom.dump in the tub and level it out. (i usually use the hole bag of perlite). put cakes in tub makes sure to mist sides regularly and fan 3-4 times daily. but it is not nessecary to fan that much ive left mine for a week before without fanning or misting and it still fruited.(a little over an ounce dried)but you could see mycelium running up the sides of the mushrooms which ive heard is from too much humidity and not enough air. there is three dollar humidity reader at walmart that works great for checking humidity. mine usually runs from 90 to 95%. and i usually just sat in front of window seal for light you might want to get some blinds or something.hope i helped:)
