Yeah I guess that really helps out all the underage users and junkies on the boards.

We have a whole forum for new users now.

When I was newer the only thing about this forum I wanted changed was the top right button leading to the forum index. It's still a pain in the ass for me to get to the forum index, every other forum has it set to the forum index but apparently this website isn't a forum... I sure in the hell think this is a forum.. Anyway I agree with Geokills, you might think it's a higher priority though but like he said most users know there's a chat just they don't use it.


I wanted my dream to be a reality... but I guess it's just a pipe dream...

Being able to turn the icon off/on should be an option, but I think the default should be on, and let the people who don't like it turn it off.  While there are chat links around, if you aren't looking for them, they can be difficult to find depending on what boards you watch.  I've been in Mush Cult for months, and didn't find the link until I stumbled upon it by accident on one of my rare visits to the Pub.

Since the icon has been made, it's shown that it'll attract more attention to the chat rooms, which in turn means more users in the chat rooms.  You gotta advertise a service for anyone to make use of it.

Really? Common, the forums are pretty easy to find. And the chat.

Geokills point is still valid. We are putting the needs of the few above the many.
TDR, I really appreciate you as a shroomery member. Like I said, I hope you are around for a long time. But I have been here for years and some have been here for much longer than I, and we just don't see the point.

You haven't been around long enough to see how the shroomery changes. It seems that we are attracting the wrong crowd. The conversation used to be better, everyone in MC was actually polite believe it or not, and a lot of things generally were not tolerated. It's more of a social thing and less of a learning experience.

This is pure politics. Some of us conservatives don't like the liberals coming and changing everything and we don't even get a say.

I think we can all be adults here and voice our different opinions

How is a linked icon putting the needs of the few above the needs of the many?  It's simply bringing attention to one of the Shroomery's features that isn't well advertised on some of the boards.  As far as "attracting the wrong sort of people" goes, that's a moderation issue.  If people are exhibiting undesirable behaviors, there should be responses for that behavior that encourage the behavior to be changed.

I think it's pretty funny such a big stink is being raised over a little icon.  It doesn't hurt anyone, and it's easily ignored by those who don't wish to use it.  As far as being resistant to change, any medium of communication that doesn't evolve along with the incoming group it serves ends up dying out in the long run.  I would like to see the Shroomery not only stick around for years to come, but I would also like to see it continue to grow, and become more efficient at serving its users.

Ill pop on the chat occasionally but any kind of chat or instant message within community turns into roll playing, it's a perversion, it certainly turns me off and I don't think they they realize what their doing isn't real.
Anyway, it's not exactly a big facet of this site, when it was a IRC it was hardly apart of the shroomery forums, different moderators, different rules. Sure there's some mutual rules and whatever but the only thing that connects Chatter with the shroomery is the usernames.
For that icon to be there staring at you all the time seems a little too obsessive those who want to find it will.

Posting on the boards is just as much role playing as in the chat, and it's as real or fake as you make it.  With good moderation, and advertisement, the chat very well could become a big facet of the Shroomery in the future.  In order to go looking for it and find it, one must know it exists first.

The primary issue I have with the icon being attached to everyone's profile snapshot is that it is inconsistent with our existing member specific icon functionality, as well as the underlying purpose of a personal profile snapshot in aggregate.

That is, you don't see a gallery icon for members who have no shared uploads, or a journal icon for members with no personal entries, because why give people the impression that they can access contributions, communications or data directly related to a specific member, when they can't?  Likewise, why put a talk bubble specifically adjacent to a member's name if, when you click it, it takes you to some place that does not allow you to communicate with that member in any way whatsoever?

Put plainly, it's counter intuitive to place links next to member names when those links, in 99% of cases, have absolutely bupkiss to do with that member.

The IRC was around for years and never was a big facet. On the chat it's a lot more compulsive people will talk about themselves for hours at a time to anyone who will listen, that's when bonds start to form and the drama begins. On a forum you don't greet someone everytime they say something or sign in, you're not always asking "what's up", "how's it going", "did you ever confront your boss about that one issue", it's a lot more personal and on the IRC people started to forget what it was like to have real buddies in real life.

Because of this emotional skew that occurs with any kind of chat platform it's very rare to see a decent moderator; in fact it hardly ever occurs, typically the ones that need moderated are the moderators themselves, it turns into a power trip, it's not rules that are enforced it's personal endeavors which is exactly what the IRC what like. I think it's a sense of feeling special, having power, which you'll notice most people that spend a lot of time online strive for, which wouldn't surprise me if the IRC mods look to be mods on this new chat.

So this is why I don't partake in the chat that much.

I have it enabled, it doesn't bother me, and I used the chat occasionally before it was ever there.

When it was a huge link next to our names that was annoying and uncalled for.

I went into the pub chat and got to know Gumby a little bit. That was cool, if it wasn't for chat, we would probably not have spoken.

but the question is is it necessary, and the answer is no. There was already a global sticky about it after the blackout.

I used the shroomery chat way back when the feelfamily was around, and we all chatted in there. FF was kind of like AMU but AMU absorbed FF for the most part.

Anybody with half a brain could learn about the chat. How did you find your way there? I can't make stickies or change icons or anything but I can get the word out about a thread or whatever easily.The quality of conversation in the general chat is very substandard for the shroomery. This is why I am pushing for more chat rooms and LESS advertisement for morons.

I found it by accident.  I usually stay in Mush Cult, but I decided to explore a bit 'other night and found the link in the Pub.  I agree that the General room isn't that great, but now that people have actually been joining the Cultivation room, there has been some positive use made of it.  And I agree, the text link wasn't the best idea, but I like the chat bubble.  I just thought the idea would be worth pursuing because not only will more people be aware of the chat, but more people will actually use it when they see someone they know is using it.  More rooms will surely be added as more people use the chat room, but not until more people are using the chat rooms already in existence.

I wasn't targeting you specifically with my previous comment, there's just been a level of hate for having a status icon for the chat that I could never have expected.  I just find it interesting that such a small image added to a profile could draw so much fire.

The outline of the chat bubble is black; all the other icons have a lighter outline. It looks poor. It should look more like the trophy icon seen in the second user's thing:



Outlines don't have to be black. Another example:



Additionally, the chat bubble has a style of coloring that gives it a Play-Doh-like look. It should definitely have a more refined look.

Also, the deep red/deep green have a bizarre, sci-fi feel.
