I beleive the search tool on this site could be improved greatly.

When searching for: "sink or float" (in quotes exactly like that) I got this thread as a result >>>

Not only is the entire phrase "sink or float" nowhere in the post - the word float doesn't appear ANYWHERE in the post.

I also would like to see a way to sort search results. The biggest one is relavancy (how many times your keywords appear), but it would be nice to be able to sort in other ways too.

What do you think?

Another one:

I searched for in quotes "best dessicant"

It came back with http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post3193935

which doesn't even have the word best anywhere in the thread!

What is the purpose of the quotes and entire phrase search if it satisfies the search with one word?

Great suggestions. Our post search uses mySQL's built in fulltext search functionality which has complete support for boolean queries, so it looks like you may have uncovered a bug in our script. I'll definitely look into it.

At the moment bug fixes have priority but 'sort by relevance' is another useful feature which I'll try to add when I get a chance.

It is spelled desiccant by the way.

I can imagine that "best" is a so called stop word which is ignored in the search since it is so common. I don't know though. I guess Ythan knows more.

Anno made a great point, I'd forgotten about stopwords but that's actually the correct explanation for your search not performing as expected. The words which are currently excluded from BB searches are:

It's possible for us to modify this, but we'd have to evaluate how any changes to the stopword list would affect performance.

Okay, I believe I've fixed boolean searches. Relevance sorting hasn't been added yet, but at least things like phrase searching and exclusions should work. Everyone please let me know if you notice anything out of the ordinary with your results. Thanks!

I added a 'Sort By Relevance' option to the search and made it the default. In my testing it works pretty well, but everyone please share any weird experiences you have.

Highlighting is actually already there. It works for simple searches (like if you search for just the word 'highlighting', your post will come up and the search word will be highlighted). However more complicated queries can sometimes break it. I'll try and get it to work more reliably. Thank you for the suggestion!

Please change the default back to sort by date. I suppose I could get used to changing the default every time, but I'd rather not.
