Debating beliefs is a waste of time
    #1702292 - 07/10/03 11:34 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I finally came to the conclusion that discussing spiritual beliefs is a waste of time. It's impossible for two people to agree on anything so it's not even worth your time to share your beliefs with someone else. Just live your life and stop philosophizing. Move into a life of direct experience instead of endless theorizing. You'll learn more in a day outside with other humans than you could ever hope to debating on an internet forum.

often a knowing look is the most that can be communicated. it means "yeah, I feel it too".

Actually, I prefer to both live my life, ahd philosophizing. That way, you get the best of both worlds. Not one for idea exchange? I'd rather debate ideas and beliefs than have them forced on me.
I, myself, have learned a lot from hanging out on here, conversing with other like-minded individuals. Where would I be, if me and my friend never discovered Shroomery?

Why shouldn't we do both ?
Living is a learning experience of all kind.
Anyway, discussing spiritual beliefs with the intention to convert other people to your beliefs is a waste of time. It's not a waste of time if you debate to know.
Learning is good, be it on the internet or in the sunshine.

Its simple. Both sides are as valid as eachother. neither can be proven. a religeon that belives donuts are god is just as valid as christianity.

Well I whole-heartedly agree that two antagonistic beliefs are'nt going to merge very easily.

But people always influence each other. Everybody grows on everybody. And when your on a message board, I think it's even easier to consider and exchange views.

I for one am influenced all the time by the creativity and pure expression that's on these boards. If you want someone to change thier beliefs right away, you got another thing comin, but im sure that if anyone stays here long enough their going to be influenced.

When discussing spiritual beliefs, it can and often IS FUTILE.
I believe this is true, not because i think that people are too closed minded to each other, but because every person takes very intricate and appreciated routes to their beliefs, and so debating them is not a causual matter. If you try to make it casual, you will get nowhere fast. This will make people seem closed minded, and for all practical purposes they are, but they are not close-minded in the delusional way and, therefore, are open to truth. It's the EXPERIENCES that matter to people, even if the experience is learning something or synthesizing an idea one day on the toliet. When two people are arguing, they cannot recreate and communicate their intricate routes to their beliefs. If they could, then arguing spiritual beliefs would'nt be as futile as you see it. And everybody would understand everybodies position.
But, alas, we do not live such an idealized world.

On message-boards deliniations can be seen alot more clearly and time can be spent analysing without pressure for an immediate response. This makes it pretty likely place for influence and spiritual/philosophical debate should'nt be discouraged.

as long as those debating are intelligent enough to have an open mind, then a debate is never pointless, but rather, more like a group meditation.
