I agree that fear opens the psyche to unwanted influences...
I think fear is a derivative of ego...Or is ego a derivative of fear...
Artists, doctors and scietists have excelled in their fields by accessing ego-less states thru drugs...Therefore the ego is not necessary for creativity and could even hamper it.
(I guess I should describe what 'ego' means to me:
accusatory, flippancy- inappropriate levity
irresponsibility- unreliable or untrustworthy
Judgments based on Fear, Vanity, Jealousy, Greed, Hate, Resentment. Distrust and that our experiences are unjustified.
Gloating(express great pleasure or self-satisfaction)
Bombastic(big without meaning)
Arrogance(overbearing self-worth or self-importance.superiority),
Pomposity(excessive self-esteem or exaggerated dignity; pretentious)
Egotistic ( selfish, self-centered, conceited, boastful)
Disagreeable(Not to one's liking; unpleasant or offensive.Having a quarrelsome, bad-tempered manner)
- presumptuous - spiteful - haughty - materialistic. )
...If neither fear nor ego (as defined above) is desirable, then why do we have them?

Consider the act of walking on hot coals...
My guess is we attain egolessness, a loss of the individuality which encompasses fear...and maybe pain also.
So both pain and fear could be ingredients of the ego.
The definition of 'Deity' is 'personification of a force',
and we can personify the 'Highest Spiritual source'
into a farther-figure complete with gender; But underneath all the personifications of individual interpretations the 'Highest Spiritual Source' remains the same. Therefore the Christian God is the same as the Moslem, the Jewish and the Buddhist etc etc.
Meditation as a means of attaining egolessness; A loss of seperation...
so the ego is a seperation from the 'Highest Spiritual Source'...
and we experience fear at the prospect of re-integration with that Source.
Overcoming the ego thru meditation/drugs overcomes fear/pain.
Why would we naturally fear integration with the 'Highest Spiritual Source'?
Because of loss of individuality?
Fear of death = fear of loss of individuality?
Pain = a warning that loss of individuality could be imminent?
We want to re-integrate with the 'Highest Spiritual Source'
but we're afraid to.
We fear the unknown.
The ego fears dissolution.
The ego may be necessary for survival, but what do we get out of survival that legitamizes fear? Individuality itself? The state of individuality naturally includes fear of it's loss. Autonomy includes fear. Autonomy = master of one's domain = God-like...So Gods have fear...fear of losing their individuality. Are we a threat to God (as the 'Highest Spiritual Source')? As equals we continualy plot for each others demise, looking out for #1, exclusive resolution of conflict. Love = inclusive resolution of conflict...so untill we learn how to resolve our differences without killing each other, then we will aleways remain a threat to God....and in overcoming the ego we lose the desire to kill? and therefore re-integrate with the power to overcome pain and fear...hmmm...

So you can't be an individual and at the same time be unafraid of losing that quality?
Can't an "individual" be comfortable knowing he will only be individual temporarily, and still be content being individual for the time being? (in other words, accepting the total uknown just around the corner, and being who he is anyways, not out of desperation to hold onto it, but just because it feels like the right thing to do)
