Support Diversity and Openness in our Nation's Media
    #1581499 - 05/27/03 12:50 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

From: Matt Howes, National Internet Organizer, ACLU
To: ACLU Action Network Members
Date: May 27, 2003

The Federal Communications Commission is reviewing a rule that would
reportedly allow corporations to further increase their media ownership.
Diversity of ideas and opinions are key to the functioning of a
healthy, stable democracy. If a handful of corporations are able to control
the media sources for the majority of Americans, this diversity may be
threatened and lost.

Furthermore, despite the significant public interest in this issue, the
Commission is meeting behind closed doors without public review or
input from Congress on the actual rule.

It is critical that we preserve diversity and have public comment on an
issue of this magnitude.

Because more and more people are getting their information from the internet, particularly younger people.

--------------------
To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

but the people that vote arent the young people. The people that vote (and have large sums of money)are the only people that have power.

But that situation will change in 20 or 30 years.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis
