watching child porn as an adolescent
    #15641891 -

So this is a difficult one for me to talk about, and in all honesty I have not shared this with anyone, not even a therapist. In saying that, I hope that any responses are serious and considerate. Here goes:

Much of the guilt in my life and destruction of my self image has been attributed to a single action that occured a number of times from the age 12 to about age 17 or 18, when I stopped, realizing the effect it had on my psyche and self-confidence, and feeling that it was no longer justified as being morally acceptable by that age. To put it plainly, the act is this:

At age 11 or so I started getting into the internet, and consequently, internet porn, of which I was fascinated. But the argument I always had was that I wanted to see girls that were my age, the ones that I was attracted to. Of course, this was virtually impossible to find on all the widely known porn sites, as it is now. Yet, being good at solving problems, I decided to figure out how to solve this one. And unfortunately for my sake, I did. I won't say how and with what engine exactly, but I was able to find what I was looking for online.

After doing it, I felt relieved of the temptation, and told myself that there was nothing wrong with it since I was the same age. I still however knew that it was dangerous territory, especially the risk of my parents finding out, or getting in trouble themselves for this in some way. And so I only satisfied this desire on rare occasion, maybe 3 or 4 times per year, or less in later years. I did not at that time understand the implications this action might have on my self-confidence and self-image, and so continued. That is, until I started to get older and feel guilty about it. The sexual urge was still there in my mid teens, but I was questioning the moral righteousness of the action. It came to the point where, sadly, I would desire it even more strongly as it became more of a taboo for me, and I think this is where it became a problem. Knowing it might be wrong, and yet continuing to do it. Being unable to resist the urge, and then feeling horribly guilty after satisfying it.

Eventually, I started to notice that it was destroying my self-image and self-respect, as I slowly began to hate myself. I realized that it affected the way I felt amongst people and in getting closer to women, as I now felt like I had this horrible secret to hide. And so at the age of 17 or 18, I stopped completely, and haven't searched for it since, a fact I am proud of. The desire lingered for some time in the years after, but is pretty much non-existent today, at age 24.

I have dealt with the complete destruction of my self-image and self-confidence due to this, and ultimately admit that it is the action I regret most in my life. It has caused much fear in a number of different areas, especially in simply being in the presence of children, which at times has been unbearable and I'm sure easy for mothers to read. This hurts me a lot because I, in particular, love kids, and look forward to having some of my own some day. This fear I believe is slowly receding with time, and by bringing this problem into awareness (hence the reason for this post), and also by becoming closer to my niece who is 3. I, in a way, feel that she has saved me because she is helping me to get over this fear and to realize that that is not who I am. That this desire is no longer there, and that my acting on it at that time was justifiable due to my age.

And so I ask:

What are your honest thoughts about this?

Do you think it was morally acceptable considering my age and the fact that I stopped completely?

Do you have any advice or words of wisdom?

Anyone have a similar story?

Thanks to those who have read through this, and to those that respond with consideration to the sensitivity of the matter :sun:

I say this in complete honesty:

I think your actions were morally acceptable considering your age and the fact that you stopped completely.

I fantasized about my classmates in grade school.  This doesn't make me a pedophile -- it simply means I was a kid!

Unless you feel a complete alleviation of guilt -- as I think you deserve to do -- I would suggest that you see a therapist in order to talk this one out.  It's obviously been weighing on you heavily and you have the right to feel better.

Best of luck to you!

But I'm also a very understanding. Try to be at least. I have always had great pity for people with urges like this, children or married woman or whatever. Urges can make moves for you. I would bet that all the sickos that are pedo's, rapists and shit don't want to be in those shoes either. It was just the cards that they were dealt ya know ? I mean I still think they should be held accountable for their actions of course but it's sad. To anyone who is "normal", be glad ya know ?

CounterCulturest, I appreciate the spirit of tolerance you espouse here, but I don't think that the OP's situation is one that requires toleration.  He was a kid interested in girls his own age.  NDB, that's totally within all societal norms.  You can't blame someone under 18 years of age for not understanding how exploitative child pornography is.

OP, you seem like a genuinely good person.  Talk this one out with a therapist you trust so you can feel better about yourself!

Am I missing something here? You seem to say that you sought out other girls of your age? Well what is wrong with that? Do you then go onto mean that you carried ON wanting to have sex with girls that age?

To understand I have to know what you mean.

I was wondering the same thing. Please clarify, OP

Well I stopped searching for it completely at age 17 or 18. But the urge continued for some time after - by which I mean sexual attraction to girls age 12-17, as well as 18 and up of course. It was tough too because my mind seemed to be against me during this time and I often had a hard time not thinking about it if I was horny. More like out of compulsion I would think about it, and my mind would show me things I had seen, just because I didn't want to.

It destroyed my self-image because at one point I said to myself, when I was 18 or 19, "Oh my God, I have watched child porn!", and thus began a whole moral and religious dilemma and fearing going to hell and all that. It almost became like a black and white thought, if you know what I mean. Either one has watched child porn or they haven't. I would easily forget that my case was a little bit more complicated than that, considering my age at the time and lack of understanding/life experience.

Sounds like you have a good conscience. But believe me, in no way should you go on kicking yourself over something in the past. You looked at some jailbait girl when you were barely older than the girls pictured. No need to keep dwelling on it. As long as you still aren't, it's okay.

You're 24 and you obviously regret it and you know it's not right and you aren't looking at that shit anymore. Move on already. Stick to 18 plus porn for now on ok? And stop beating yourself up over it, we all have skeletons in our closets.

We live in a strange world of laws and morality. Not so long ago, (50 years ago) in the US, it was very common for a adult male 18-50 to marry a 13-14 girl, it was socially acceptable.

A 100 years ago and all through out human history, older males have had much younger wives, as young as 12. This is who we are as humans, it's in our genes, our great great grand mothers were having children at a young age.

In Germany and other Euro nations, many 50 year old men have 16-17 year old girlfriends or wives.

There was a case in Georgia with a 18 year old boy was sent to prison for having sex with his 16 year old gf, and was given 10 years for statutory rape. Law enforcement love being involved with sex laws.

Child porn is when there are very young children involved, people involved with this should be brought to justice.

Yes, the idea was to have kids before one or the other died. Life was a lot shorter in days of Yore.

I guess you didnt have facebook at the time )

I dont know really, your not responsible at such a young age, but feel concerned you may be elaborating on ages to make it seem better (maybe not!!! I tend to be cynical)

At 11 you wouldnt understand the girls in the pictures were being horribly abused, but later you would...

I guess just move on, as long as your only attracted to girls of an attractive age now, you dont seem to be a pedo...

Yes I have the same story. When I was maybe 12 or 13, I wanted to see girls my own age... and like you, unfortunately I was smart enough to find it. I started with nudist sites and eventually fell on really sick shit using filesharing. Like you I kept doing it when I was old enough for it to be completely inappropriate, i.e late teens.. I hated myself more and more, to the point of almost suicide, I lived in constant paranoia.. I kept doing it to feel worse and worse and give myself more and more reasons to hate myself, even though it absolutely revolted the hell out of me. Finally I got myself out, and have been clean ever since.. I'm 25 now and I stopped 5 or 6 years ago. I have no, I mean no desires in that direction, it just disgusts me and if I find it by accident browsing, I report it to the police immediately - I figure it's the least I can do.

But my life is already ruined, what I've seen haunts me every second of every day, it has for the last 10 years. I can't remove the images from my mind, I quit high school early in depression from this, I've never kissed a girl (at 25 that's pretty bad), I constantly fight a battle against overwhelming, crushing guilt, and I feel that all my friends would detest me if they knew what I've done. Like you, it has decimated my self-confidence and self-esteem, I can see nothing worthwhile in myself after doing that. I can't live with myself and I feel that I'm closer to suicide every day. It's such a cruel joke, to utterly and completely ruin your life when you're too young to understand the enormity of what you're doing, but it's done.

I guess I'm in exactly the same position as you... it's impossible to forgive myself for something like that, maybe it doesn't deserve forgiveness... but I can never risk telling anyone else, and seeing if I'm right, see if they could forgive me for it, even my best friends - imagine how they would look at me. Too hard to risk.

So yeah, I understand, it's amazingly hard to live with something that disgusting and huge in your past...always alone, and knowing it's not even something you should be excused for.

If you find a way to live with that, let me know, I'd love to find out myself, the guilt from that is so enormous and really has completely overshadowed and destroyed literally my whole life, it's horrific.

The reason pedophilia is bad is because kids can't understand the consequences of their actions, and that they are easily led astray. The first one absolves you, the second didnt happen.

Never again, if you do it now as an adult you're fucked up.

I think it was perfectly fine to watch girls your own age.
I was always bummed I couldn't watch 15-16 year olds when I was 14-16. I was always too dumb to find that shit though. And too paranoid to really look that hard.

Good news is, you aren't a pedophile. Look up Ephebophilia. It's a different and more specific age range that, imho, isn't as "wrong" as pedophilia.

You just need to forgive yourself now, in order to feel better. Whether that means self-imposed penance, or a psychedelic coming-to-terms-with-yourself session, or whatever. Just do it however you feel most comfortable.

Peace and love, man. You aren't a bad person.

I think to call an attraction to 14-17 year old girls "pedophilia" and to treat it like it's the same level as someone into toddlers is a bit silly.

Not the only difference, but for one, one category is probably  and naturally trying to have sex with you harder than you are with them, and the other category (pre-pubescent) likely hasn't even had thoughts along those lines yet.
