Straw logs

I've recently found a complete tek on how to do straw logs and everything I've read make them sound like a great venture. I was wondering why I haven't seen it come up here very often. Is it just inconvenient/conspicuous to have them around or are they really not that great. AFOF was thinking about experamenting but that's a lot of spawn to risk. Nothing ventured, nothing gained right?

It should work. I think any way of running straw is a good idea -- get more from less. I case it though.

it just seems so cumbersome...at least in the tek that I've seen.
also, you'd need to hang the casting in a room that's moderately humidified.
now you're talking (excessively) large scale...

I have no humidifier; I ghetto rigged it with peices of wood and plastic sheeting <g>
The log tek does seem a lot more costly and time consuming, though.

you could probably get similiar utilization of surface area by trying the 'laundry basket' tek that hippie3 posted.
it's someone else's idea originally, but he cross pollinated from nansnook or mycotopia.
it's a cheap and much more lower maintenance approach with similar advantages and much less prerequisite space and hardware.

Do you think one could make a hanging 3-D fruiting vision's laundry basket out of a milk crate? I might try this one when I have the time.... -- Micro

right on, vision, I forgot who the original mastermind was.
I like your train of thought with the milk crate.
a suspended milk crate might reduce the odds of contaminating sitting on the rug or floor too.
plus you have the ability to fruit on all 6 sides instead of just 4 or 5.

A milk crate should work. I'd use about a quart for spawn on a cube that size.

is it me, or does that seem low?
I don't know where you get your milk crates, but where I get mine they don't come seasoned, er, small.
I'm also a spawnaholic...meh.

Could be a little. I used 3 quarts on that basket I did. It was 2-3 times the size of a milk crate.
2 quarts should definitely be enough.

What about forming some 1/2 inch wire mesh into a basket?

The main point of the logs is to hold the CO2 in during colonization. They are pinning in 14 days as a result. I think the logs get a bit more yeild per the same amount of straw as a laundry basket, but that's not the point. The difference is faster colonization, and no misting. The Visions laundry basket tek is an excellent way to grow also, don't get me wrong.

I'm sure straw logs would work great.... I've just been too lazy to go out and buy plastic tubing.

the 'mastermind' behind the laundry baskets was a mycotopiate called 'Visions'. rodger rabbit is the one behind the new straw log tek. let's show them some of those pictures, rodger. re-posted from mycotopia, rodger's straw log. golden teacher strain.

that's quite a different arrangement than the straw logs that I was envisioning...I was thinking of the verticle logs used for pleurotus cultivation...
I'm curious about this photo, it looks like it colonized in a tighter bag, was removed and had a clear cover draped over it for fruiting?
any more details on preparation?

everywhere I've found it, it's pretty expensive.
it looks like he's using the 12" plastic tubing.
fungi perfecti is the only place that sells it in reasonable lengths (20ft for 12 something).
everywhere else it's 80 bux for a 1200ft roll.
sure it makes more sense that way, but damn if that ain't a whole lotta logs!

a better question is what mil size to get? if you can get by with 2 mil then you can get 3500' rolls for $40.
