A pH of 12 is very high. 12 is comparable to soapy water and 13 to bleach according to this website: http://www.wcsscience.com/pH/page.html

that all matters little since we already know it works and very well at that. cubie mycellia is an amazingly tough organism. and the extreme ph helps keep out assorted nasties.

Exactly why we do it. The myc can handle it fine, but spores (of any kind) won't be able to germinate until the ph comes back down. By then the myc will be established and can hold its own.

It's the water that goes to 12.I don't think the straw goes that high.I made a run a few days ago and for shit's and giggles,i tested the Ph of the water before and after.12 before 10 after.Making a run today.I will run a Ph on the straw and see where it's at after it's done..

afoaf is seeing a lot of mutation.
wondering if high levels of bleach could be causing this problem?
not really using anything else that would cause these sorts of petroleum type mutations...
except maybe trace amounts of oust settling while making up the logs or using rubber gloves.
any thoughts?

Might be the bleach, who knows. Mutants are cool though. . .

dude has a few logs going -- they do indeed colonize quickly -- but they seem to have come to a halt.. many pieces of straw that are up against the plastic seem like they won't ever colonize! anyone got a pic of a completely colonized straw log before it pins .. or really any pics showing the process of a log maturing before and during pins?

we haven't observed any direct correlation between bleach [at the proper concentration ] and mutations. bleach quickly breaks down in just a day or two. of course mutations occur for a plethora of reasons so exactly why you have them is anybody's guess.

looks like the straw is completely colonized --- any idea why some of the straw right up against the plastic might not colonize?

a friend saw a corrolation between lysol and mutation, so i am guessing it is the oust you may have gotten on it. just my 2 cents. good luck!
