I had been pondering the thought of purchasing the huge roll of poly tubing when I happened upon something. I was walking out of my local hospital and I turn to see.....Umbrella Holders. Now to make sure you all understand what I am refering to, they are the plastic bags that around about 3.5 feet long and about 9 inches wide flat. I grabbed about ten of them and brought them home. I tested their strength by filling with water and trying to burst them with pressure....and they HELD!!! Also the circumfrance is very close to 13" around which makes for a middle weight size straw log. I'll have pictures to post later tonight and hopefully a friend of mine will start a couple logs later this weekend!!

They have a free disposable plastic umbrella holder dispenser at your hospital?
I've never heard of or seen such a thing, but it sounds cool!

Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

But, a tube with a lay flat width of 9 inches has an inflated diameter of what like 5.5 inches? That's a pretty small log considering that the latest I've heard from rodger rabit, he's now recomending 12" diameter logs.
But hey, free is always good!

I measured it wrong. When I fill it with water it is about 9 inches in diameter. I know RR has recommended 12" but I believe he still had much sucess with his 8" and 10" logs, also my friend only plans on only making each of his logs around 20" long.

um what the hell exactly is an umbrella holder?
sorry i just cant picture it... nor can i see how i can get this for free...
if i walked up to an umbrella vendor in NYC and asked if i could have his umbrella holders for free, he would probably smack me upside my head..

9" diameter will work fine. I wouldn't go less than 36" long though...It will dry out too fast.

One of these parrots I know at the local pet store is able to speak really well. While I was listening to him he told me about his friend that had actually used this method. He said as soon as he spoke with him again that he would get me some pictures to post but as of now they were colonizing extremly fast. The strain his friend used was PES Hawaiian cause he's a parrot and loves the tropics ;-)
