i dont know if this should now go into regular cult because of its popularity, if you need to move it mod sorry in advance..but
i have a few questions about this exact tek that maybe could be cleared up this is the tek http://www.mycotopia.net/discus/messages/2/24584.html?1050544454 to spare you from reading the whole thing. it says that the lime brings the ph up to 12...i thought mycelium can only survive a ph of around 8? can any one clear that up? also no bleach is used is that fine? and he also pasturizes at around 150 is that good? and lastly he leaves the bag wrapped untill inverto starts. is that nessicary just wanna clear this up for me thank you

Wow.... 12 is pretty high -- that's about the pH of bleach. Not the way I go about doing things, but I guess it works....

I use the tek and it works great.I add bleach to my limewater(1 cup to 15 gallons). It amazes me how quickly the mycelium rips through the straw.Follow the tek and add the bleach, the results will absolutely amaze you .I have had mature shrooms in as little as 16 days though 22 days is my average. And yeah leave the bag on,it protects the log from drying.

How is it that this tek can leave mycelium to fully colonize a substrate in a fully lit room (NOT the dark) and in room temps. How can it work? Why not use a dark, warm room?

I do. You could prolly just do it in an unheated room, but it's better if you don't.

the mycelium and straw makes it's own heat. I put a log on my grow chamber with a thermometer inserted into the middle of it and it overheated . I have no theories about the light.

put a thermo porb in the substrate . i quit working with straw 'cause it's such a pain in the ass to prepare . but with the horse poo i'm useing now, and a room temp of 80F, the substrate got up to 88F at times, then cooled off in later stages of growth .

the point i was trying to make, is that substrate temp should be monitored .

Well, yeah -- I certainly will next time.
It's just funny, though -- I don't and I've never had a problem, ever, and it colonizes in like 5 days.
Just curious.

the thermometer probe said 92 degrees in my 84 degree grow chamber so I removed the log to a cooler spot it eventually went down to about 80. If it had gotten any hotter it would have started composting

indeed, bleach kicks ass with lime pasturization.

Incubating in a lighted room helps to speed up pinning. Paul Stamets has written that 86F is the ideal temperature for cubies to incubate. He was talking about substrate temperature, not air temperature. The substrate will always be warmer than the surrounding air. As for the PH of 12, this is what it measures right after pasteurization. As soon as the mycelia begins to rip through the substrate, the ph naturally lowers. Within two weeks it will be in the 6.5-7.5 range.

A pH of 12 seems extreme to me -- that's alkaline enough to be hostile to most living things.
