Mycotek wheat straw prep tek
    #812944 - 08/12/02 11:39 AM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Ok, i'm going to grow on straw and I was wondering if anybody had any experience with mycotek's wheat straw prep tek http://www.myco-tek.com/TEKs/SmallCake.htm Does packing the straw into a little container help the yield that much? Before I saw this tek i was planning on doing something similar to this http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Growlog&Number=719804 Thanks DreaMaTrix!
Putting the straw in the bottom of a rubbermaid tub and casing with 50/50+ Any ideas or comments on what I should do?

The reason mycotek uses little jars is his "hydra-pod" is not designed for bulk teks like the tek in DreaMaTrix's post. For a large amount of mushrooms, use a true bulk tek (like that in DreaMaTrix's post).

there is no way anything in the pod can compete with a cubic meter of packed substrate.. plain and simple.. that is the benifit of true bulk tek's...

I`m battling to find a difference in what you guys are debating here.
Both Dreamatrix and Mycotek are doing similar things.
You`re both just spawning straw, dreamatrix using a deap tub and casing his straw substrate and mycofile is using any container and putting it into a pod as a cake.
So what exactly is the difference, except for the casing vs cake debate once again.
It ultimately is still straw, spawned and fruited.

The volume in your pod is limited, plan and simple.
As for comparing your yields to his yield, or even anothers yield:
I must assume that you are speaking of wet weight, as 5lb yielding 1.5 of dry is rather unbelieveable. If you actually read his post, you would see that his total yield was 1.59 lbs, or 722 grams WET, which is, of course, around ~2.5 oz (rounding down) dry. Now, keep in mind his was a rather small volume, even compared to something like this:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Growlog&Number=609532&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=all&vc=1
yield was 8oz DRY, PER FLUSH.
with 3 simmilar flushes, totaling 1.5 lbs DRY, or nearly 15 lbs wet.
So, bulk or semi bulk? You do the math.

The difference is I am saying he does not need to spend his money on a bucket, and that more volume will yield more (and is not necessarily harder). See Mycofile's report, he did an excellent job with the write-up.
Otherwise, you are completely correct..
(edit, I ment Mycofile not Mycotek)

Well, I thank you both for your information. I didin't realize that mycotek was packing the straw to fit inside a pod ( should have made the connection). Since I don't have a pod i'll just go with the deep rubber bin. It will give me more than plenty for personal use. Thanks guys!

You are comparing apples and oranges, namely wet and dry. The bulk yields from the post I linked to far outstrip yours, as I stated in the post, and they are consistent with Staments claims of normal yield for cubensis in such a setup.
I do not doubt that you can achieve what you claim, as I have done the same/similar with Blazei (in fact, a strain purchased from Staments), but you seem to be missing the point I was trying to make: WET weight, one lb is perfectly reasonable. DRY weight, it is not. I am sure you are familiar with GGMM; read chapter 7 again if you have some sort of confusion regarding what I am saying.
While your pod appears to be excellent for cakes, it simply cannot compete with a decently sized casing.
Despite your incessant assumption that the entirety, or even the bulk, of my knowledge is a derivative of home/closet/clandestine cultivation, the truth is quite the opposite. I find it rather contradictory that you keep attacking me and claiming that I am merely a closet cultivator of drugs, while you make a product fairly well aimed at exactly the audience you seem to dislike.
Anyway, enough of this argument, there is no arguing with the simple numbers.
Follow the ?bulk-neglect? tek I linked to, and you will have more mushrooms than you know what to do with (in his case, 1.5 lbs). Make sure you plan ahead for the drying, btw, or you will have a problem like Moe .
Best of luck, use them well.
(edit, damn those conjugations)
