wheat straw substrate
    #564363 - 02/26/02 11:16 PM (23 years, 3 months ago)

I am starting to use wheat straw instead of just rye for the substrate. I bought a shredder and shredded the hay. When I shredded it I got what looks like dryed cut lawn and a finer wheat straw powder mixed in with it. I sifted the powdery wheat from the grassy. About half of it is powder. I don't want that to go to waste so I was wondering if I could use that powdered wheat as part of the casing soil. If I could do that, would it be used for food or would the mycelium ingnore it and treat it as casing? If I can't do that could I use that powdered wheat straw and mix it with perlite or something and use that to grow? What is the ideal ratio of rye spawn per wheat straw? Does anyone know of what strains love wheat straw the best? And thanx, any help would be appreciated.

I'm not really an expert, but I'll tell you what I think.

Don't use the powder as part of your casing. If the casing were nutritive the mycelium would treat it as substrate and colonise it, therefore defeating the purpose of the casing in the first place.

I would use it possibly as an equal substitution for flour in a flour based substrate. As for as I know one would not use perlite in substrate, use vermiculite instead.

I think just about all cubes can grow on straw, I don't know which ones grow best though.

Try using electric hedge trimmers -- next time -- to mulch you bale. Almost no powder. If you have a ratchet type cargo strap (?), cinch it around the bale about 4 inchs from the end. Cut away. Move strap, cut again. So on & so forth. Strap holds the bale togather while you cut.
