I don't want to toot my own horn too loudly here, but ever since I posted this it seems that everyone has come up with a straw chopping "tek".
I have nothing against this, except that I've tried them all. Chipper/shredders, mowers, hedge clippers, scissors, table top paper cutters, weed wackers, yard leaf vacs(instant clogging), etc.,etc.
None of which is as easy to clean up, as stuffing straw down a tube, ejecting it 3 inches at a time, and chopping it off flush with the end of the tube with a kitchen knife.
Sorry if I sound sarcastic, I don't want to take anything away from anybody elses ideas, it's just that i have made lots of big peices of straw small in my time and this is the technique that I have found to work the easiest. Just trying to share it with all of you.

Not to rain on your parade, but actually my straw chopping idea came to me after reading Ripper's post, and wondering what someone who doesn't have the cash to buy a mulcher might use. In fact, I never even noticed your post. You've got a good idea, and you've obviously put some thought into it, but, as for me, I'll drop the bill on the gas mulcher and make my life easier.
