is this what you meant by:

combining bleach/lime and heat

I'm trying to figure out the heat bit.

is the heat the past. temps or are you
incubating at something higher than
room temperature.

thanks again for all the good information.

Hey everyone.
I think the plastic bags that poster tubes can be carried in are good for making logs like this. A poster shop should have them. I swiped a pile from the company that came to sell posters at my school.

Interesting that bleach is used, I never read that in TMC. I assume the heat breaks it down, as with peroxide. This looks cool, and those pics are awesome!

indeed, much like peroxide, bleach is easily and quickly degraded by the heat and the presence of organic compounds.
it's pretty much all gone within 24 hours, turns into water and salt.

afoaf was inspired by the appearance of ease in this sort of
a tek, so afoaf tried to put his own spin on things, considering
budget constraints as the primary barrier to entry of the log
market...

dude bought some clear plastic dropcloth, available in the paint
section of any hardware store (.9 mil) and set out to use
that to create straw logs.

first, he tried using a chicken wire cylinder to 'frame' a bag,
wrapped it, taped it, but found that it was difficult to get the
newly formed bag off of the wire frame, so he took it down
a notch...

for the first experiment, dude simply layed out a large rectangle
of the sheeting, misted with some h2o2 water, layed out
a couple quarts of spawn and pasteurized (a la bleach and lime)
straw and mixed well. then he proceeded to roll the spawned
straw up in the plastic sheeting like a burrito.

forming a tight cylinder, hombre rolled the log up, taped the sheeting
down and then proceeded to pack the substrate in from the sides,
knotting them on both ends.

this was done on wednesday, check out the progress only 4 days later:

(standard holes were cut with knife tip spaced every few inches)

for the second experiment, esse thought he'd try something even
easier than the burrito technique. he took 1.5 quarts of spawn and
his pasteurized straw and layed it out on another piece of the plastic
sheeting. this one was square and considerably smaller than
the burrito sheet. the straw and spawn were mixed thoroughly
and then the four corners of the plastic sheet were drawn up
and the ball of substrate hanging down was then spun and spun
and spun, compressing it and creating a small ball at the bottom
of the sheeting. (think of it like filling a pillow case with shit,
twisting it down and then knotting it to keep it together during
pasteurization).

the excess plastic was cut after the knot, the ball was flattened
out into a wheel of sorts (like a cheese wheel) and set up on
the top shelf of a dark closet. 4 days later:

so far, these seem cheaper, yet equally effective means of
rogerrabbit's log principles. excessive amounts of spawn
were used to help ensure fast colonization, but so far, it's
surpassed the expected speed by leaps and bounds, likely
due to the available air. I mean, seriously, look at that wheel,
the surface is nearly 100% after 4 effing days...

I'll keep you posted on how these two, the straw burrito
and the straw wheel, pan out...

lastly, for shits and giggles, this one guy did a vision basket
a few days prior to this whole ordeal, but put a twist on it he
gleened from micro's mad ramblings earlier on in this very thread.

this is the hanging milk crate cousin to the vision laundry
basket:

layers of 75/25 straw/shit were heavily spawned with
wild bird seed, layered one after the other, repeatedly.
there's a layer of saran wrap on the bottom and a layer
on the top. this has been colonizing for exactly 7 days as
of this morning.

today, he'll likely remove the top layer of saran wrap, add
the casing layer, replace the saran wrap and let it do it's thing.

once he sees pins, the plan is to cut holes in the bottom layer of
saran, water as decribed in vision's tek (quasi-dunk) and then
drape a clear plastic bag over it to support the humidity required
for the fructification.

enjoy!

well, the first batch of ghetto logs and the
laundry basket all look ready exactly one
week later...

the ghetto logs were prolly ready a couple
days ago, but let them go a little longer just
to be sure.

INSANE COLONIZATION SPEED!

ZERO lost to contams during colonization.

I tore the top off of the cheese wheel one
and put it in a nice humid spot, we'll see if
any pleurotus grow or not...

I have high hopes!

Can someone post a link to the Vison basket thing. This straw log looks like it will rock. I searched for the vison basket, no dice.

dig it, OOKLA...

the milk crate is in the early stages of pinning.

it looks like the shit's really gonna hit the fan with this one!

this is a small section of the top:

this is a shot of the side:

once I put it in the trashbag for fruiting, it blew out the
sides like crazy.

with all the fresh air, any sign of green usually winds up getting
pummelled by the myc.

here's one of the logs:

it's gotten nice and fluffy, smells delicious, but still no pins yet.

need to fan a little more I guess... :frown:

And in the words of ROADKILL ,"now let's see some fruits."

My guess is you'll look at it one day and there will be so many pinns that you'll lose count!!!

It looks like you birthed your log a bit early. I've found it works well to leave it in the plastic until you see the first pin or two. The plastic holds in the CO2, and therefore cuts down on the loss of your straw mass to CO2 production, thus increasing yields. Then, when you birth the log, pins are triggered to pop up everywhere, due to the sudden increase in oxygen. I'm sure it will be ok, it looks good! I'd recomend keeping it covered with a loose fitting sheet of plastic that has a few holes punched for air exchange.

here's the milk crate and one of the wheels...

didn't grow as tall as I expected (allen strain)
and seems to have gotten some sort of mutagen,
likely lysol, onto the substrate...got a lot of crunk
mushies...

one of the smaller *clumps*

here's the wheel (also allen)

RR's right, I'm gonna wait until some pins start to show
before birthing.

will post the results of my log...it's knotting up quite nicely
right now.

you still need light to get pinning.
as for lime, get a small bag of pickling lime wherever canning jars are sold.
