Straw -- logs?
    #3710663 - 02/01/05 12:15 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Has anybody grown mycelium and cubinsis on straw logs in here? Whats your opinion on this method? And if you've grown with straw that wasn't organically grown, is it still safe? Been thinking about it, because it seems so self reliant. And could anybody help me out by pointing me to what i should look up in the yellow pages for getting bales of straw? I've looked up all i could think of, and have had no luck yet.

Sorry about all the questions, I just like hearing feedback from fellow experimenters before I do something. I've got my favorite, Tazmanias, and new ones to me; Palenque, BHT, and South American. I'm itchy as hell to get this round started.

I can't answer all of your questions but the surface area adwantage of a straw log has always intriqued me.
I'm just afraid of contams that way.
Somebody posted a directory link to find straw a couple days ago, I'll look for it for ya, but try local.google.com and type in garden or feed or nursery or something and it will probably come back with a location or three that you may want to call. BB with that link.

To Purchase straw in large bails you can try Blue Seal Feed if u have one where u live..or look in the phone book for Animal Feed Stores. If you want smaller bails (mini-bails) go to Michaels craft store or try Wal-Mart even.

My buddy grew this straw log with success.

mycotopia.net/discus/messages/7747/173402.html?1101997336

It was grown at room temp and basically just left in a cupboard until birthing. Then he moved it into the rubbermaid, covered it with clear plastic and fanned a couple times a day.

just drive to some rural area and if you don't see signs advertizing bales of straw for hay, just randomly stop at farmers houses and they'd be willing to sell a good amount of straw at a great price.

Lowes sells hay bails.

To find quality straw, seek out a local farmer. You can buy a bail for like $5.00. The advantage to this is that the farmer knows if chemicals were used.

good luck

hmm... well I've never tried the tek myself but it seems like some people have had success with it. maybe there's something that skyypilot didn't put in the tek.

the log tek at mycotopia is a good as they get while staying indoors. Ive had al;most 100% success with it . as far as getting 100% colonized and not seeing fruits there could be be a number of reasons(wrong pH or fruiting strategy to much bleach ) . dont give up on it yett . its the best tek IMHO for getting a lot of mushrooms with less work then brf cakes . Ive cropped a dry pound from one 36 in log using this tek with palanque .
