How much alcohol can the human liver endure without problems?
    #15245507 -

There must be some average amount of alcohol that, consumed over a given period of time, causes 50% of those consuming it to experience liver or kidney (or stomach, etc.) issues.  Let's call that the LD50 of alcohol, even though it's obviously not actually a LD50 because a LD50 measures when half your population dies during the experiment.

Does anyone know what this average (or these averages) might be?  While I work mainly in medical areas, this is one factoid they never taught me in school!

It's a weight ratio, differs depending on weight and health.

Alcohol poisoning is what happens when you have too much, and it's not good.  I had an acquaintance die momentarily while suffering from alcohol poisoning.

I'd say 12-18 beers every night over 20-25 years and you're gonna have problems... and thats almost where i'm at about now.

Right; I"m thinking more along the lines of chronic alcohol use, as opposed to acute alcohol poisoning - thought I'm sure the two have a strong relationship to one another.

Were talking about Ethyl Alcohol in our psycho pharmacology class at this very moment. Its all about BAC. over 1 drink per day is bad for your body. Alcohol effects every organ in your body and is by far the worst for you. There are literally no restrictions of ethanol on the blood-brain barrier, that's why you can consume it until you die from poisoning. It can cause cancer in your mouth, throat, stomach, gastrointestinal track. That is why we dilute by making mixed drinks.. shots are particularly bad. Generally if you can manage to get your blood alcohol level to .4, your pretty much done for unless you get quick medical attention and some mad stomach pumping. At .3, your body usually shuts down and you pass out. There are also a lot of things that come into play... sex, tolerance, stomach contents, dilution.. there are a lot of factors that come into play but usually death results from .4+ BAC
Hope this helps

Fuck.... this thread reminds me, I got to go see the doctor to get a livers function test. I get paranoid that my liver is fucked and I need confirmation that it is/isn't.

Interesting info.  What you are saying, though, certainly doesn't happen to everyone - and so this is therefore a question of risk vs. reward.  Are you saying that maintaining a .3 BAC over chronic periods (years) is going to generate significantly fewer health problems than maintaining a .5 BAC over said period, in half of a given population?

The weight (which really only means more water, hence less BAC) is only about intoxication, NOT about liver toxicity. The more you drink the harder it is on your liver no matter the weight or height or whatever mumbo jumbo. Your liver can process 1 drink every hour and a half. You can have about 2 drinks every day and not experience problems. More than that daily is a problem and you should cut back. For females, only 1 drink is acceptable for the liver. It's due to hormones and enzymes in the stomach. Females are affected by alcohol much more because males can actually break down a lot of the alcohol while sitll in the stomach, although most still makes it through the stomach lining and the small intestines.

Alcohol is pretty nasty chronic use. Fatty acids build up if you drink every day and it really ruins the liver and the liver tries to overcompensate and it becomes a big mess.

Binge drinking is even worse.. won't even get started into that, I'm sure most people know...

Anymore than a shot and your liver is going to have problems with it.
